Went there for Mother's Day having a noon reservation.Opened the door and found mysellf in the middle of about 15 angry people screaming about thier reservations and lack of tables. There were two talbes directly in front of the enterance for the food that were dirty so we sat down and waited. Finally we moved the dirty dishes to the other table and sat down to wait for our name to be called. After a few minutes we more or less took over the table because we were one of the ones due to be seated. We immediately noticed that they were short staffed and waited for clean plates. I went and got my own silverware and napkins which was not a problem for me. I saw how busy the staff was and we were hungry. Come to find out some high school had a prom the night before and some employees failed to show up for work the next day.
Our waiter, Brent, was running around trying his best to make everyone happy after being called in on his day off to support the no-shows. We got our own drink refills because we were close to the machines and again we didn't mind. We even committed to the management about his excellent work.
I do not think the restaurant should be bad-mouthed because some of the staff did not show up. The brunch was excellent in spite of us having to help ourselves and the staff was ok with it because it gave them time to satisfy the ones who were really complaining. Also we noticed that some parties were staying around after they finished eating to open Mother's Day gifts and talk.
It was an excellent meal, with a staff doing all they could to support the people, and we will definitely go back when it is not a hoilday and hopefully have a great experience. For all of those who complained, what did you expect? It was Mother's Day, get over it.

Over Priced for what you get. The air conditioning needs to be worked on. It was hot in there. Also they need to get away from the young inexperienced servers.

When I read a couple of the reviews here at Bakersfield.com. I was taken aback. I was surprised at the how the comments did not match my past positive experiences with this restaurant. Since I had not been there for dinner in a couple of months I decided pay Cafe Med a visit. My girlfriend and I were not disappointed. We went on a warm spring evening so that we could sit outside. The hostess let us choose a seclued table under the gazebo. We ordered a couple of steaks and a great bottle of wine. The meal was flawless. The server was vigilant but not so much as to be intrusive. He gave us enough space so that my girlfriend and I could enjoy each other's company and linger over our meal.
Cafe Med is the place to go if your are looking for a romantic dining experience. This is not one of those chain restaurants that heards you in and heards you out. It is a very special restaurant that is unique for the southern San Joaquin Valley. There are not many independent restaurants in our area that have a wine list that compares to Cafe Med's. There are fewer still that bake their own fresh breads daily, handcut their steaks and have a pastry chef on staff. Those other reviewers can have their cookie cutter experiences at the Olive Garden or Chilli's. I prefer the handcrafted style of Cafe Med.
