The sense of entitlement people feel as soon as they are spending a dollar or two is simply astounding. What does it matter if the barista isn't in a particularly good mood? Or maybe just doesn't like your face? It's really insignificant, get over it.
Other reviews here make statements about how Dagny's (as a collective entity? I don't really know) presents itself (somehow) as a not-pretentious Starbucks alternative, and how this indeed makes it pretentious (whatever "it" is), and yet go on to complain that Dagny's doesn't live up to it's presumed pretentious lack of pretension. So essentially, people form expectations prior to experiencing Dagny's, define those expectations as pretentious, and then become annoyed when reality does not meet their fictional idea of what it would be like. And then say, "aha, you're not at all what I thought you would think you were like!"
It's just a place that serves coffee and things, with chairs where you can read, and wi-fi. Stop pretending it's some profound cultural statement, or lamenting that it isn't, or presuming it wants to be but can't. Or whatever. That's what high school was for.
The white tea here is really good, particularly when iced.

I'm happy to call myself a regular of Dagny's. Bakersfield has few other options for locally-owned coffee shops and I am more than happy to support them. The atmosphere is always warm and welcoming (sometimes a little busy - but that's not a bad thing); there are music nights, knitting groups, Scrabble tournaments, among other events to get locals out and involved with other people in the community. I appreciate that places like this still exist without being pretentious (contrary to popular belief). Most Bakersfield residents are only used to Starbucks coffee shops, which should seldom be compared with small businesses. The customer service at Dagny's is (for the most part) exceptional. I have had a few instances where a barista or two were a bit cold, but that is not an uncommon bad trait of some human beings. Support local businesses. Try places like Dagny's and give them a chance or two. As you get to know them and they get to know you the experience can be wonderful.

I couldn't agree more with the last reviewer. I used to go here all the time, but not anymore.

Once upon a time this was a good coffeehouse, until it was sold to a complete
ignoramus who doesn't even drink coffee, nor appreciate it's taste.
No one there can pull a decent shot to save their lives,
and contrary to popular belief, it's not locally owned.
Cleanliness? Yeah right.
At least at starbucks they semi-properly train their baristas.
