We had been wanting to try Desi Cafe for quite a while, and tonight was the night!
We were impressed at the decor, the service, and especially the food. We ordered the assorted appetizer plate ($10.00) which was delicious and a great selectiion. We were especially happy to see the chicken tandoori was white meat, and moist.
We also ordered the signature dish of shrimp coconut curry. This was an A+ choice. The sauce was just perfect, creamy, rich and yet subtle. The shrimp were succulent and perfectly cooked. This dish was $13.00, and would certainly serve 4 with other entrees ordered. We also ordered a side of naan stuffed with minced lamb, rice, and mango chutney.
If you enjoy Indian food, please make sure you try this restaurant. If you have never tried Indian cooking, I highly recomend you make this your choice for your first taste of Indian cuisine.

Highly recommended....been there over 20 times and never a problem...great food great service, great value and experice..great friendly employees very helpful to 1st time customers, or people new to the Indian experience. The first time I went was shortly after they opened, and I had taken 3 friends that never had Indian food, waiters took time to make recommendations and explained the different regions where food came from....also recommend the buffet to newcomers, that way they can try different things.
Much better than their competition Indian restaurants, ran by old traditional Indians---where I have recieved the look of "why are you here" and you can feel

I have been to the Desi Cafe twice. The first time my friend and I had the appetizer sampler, the lamb vindaloo, the vegetable saffron rice, and the paneer naan. The staff was very attentive but kind of quiet. The sampler included samosas, tandoori chicken, fried paneer, etc. Most of it was deep fried but it tasted extremely fresh. Too bad you can't get this stuff at a drive-thru! The lamb vindaloo we ordered extra spicy. At first it doesn't seem that spicy but the heat builds and by the end you are sweating, but in a good way. The paneer naan was amazing, soft, and fresh.
The second time I went with my mother and we got the non-vegetarian a la carte for two people. It came with two samosas, which were great and well spiced. We chose the tandoori chicken which came on a sizzling plate with onions and peppers and was basically half a chicken cut up. It was great. We also got lamb vindaloo, again extra spicy, the yellow daal, which is yellow lentils, and the delicious vegetable rice. Oh, and raita, my favorite, it's creamy, cool yogurt with cucumber. With the two person dinner you also got dessert. I got the gulab jamun, which is homemade cheese in honey. I know this sounds a bit heavy and strange, but the cheese is very delicate, almost pastry like and the honey was warm and thick. My mother got the homemade pistacio ice cream which was very rich and creamy.
They also have a selection of Indian beers and the waiter was very helpful in helping us pick out which ones we would like the best.
This place is awesome and both times we ended up paying about 40 dollars for the meal. However, we were never able to finish everything so we got to take the left overs home which just got better the next day. I think it is well worth the money for the extremely large portion sizes.

After ordering from Desi Cafe numerous times whether it was for family gatherings or for my daughter's sweet 16 party I was very pleased with the service and the food. The service was excellent with a staff of kind and caring workers. There are many indian resturants in Bakersfield but I feel that this was the first business with great service, reasonable prices and finger-licking good food. I am going to order from them in the future. All in my friends circle i have told about desi cafe they went and really enjoyed food & service
