I have been to Desi Cafe two times now, both to enjoy the Sunday buffet. It was excellent the first time and even better the second time. The food is traditional Indian and they spare no spices in an attempt to please all. The staff is friendly and very professional. Being an Indian food fan and eating at the best Indian restaurants in the Los Angeles area, I can tell you that this place is a match for the best. A must dine restaurant.

YUMMY, YUMMY, YUMMY!!!!! Every trip to Desi Cafe has been like music to my taste buds!!
Every dish in the buffet is well prepared. Paul the owner is super nice and accomadating. Desi Cafe hosted a free lunch buffet on Diwali (festival of lights) and the lines were long and the food was great. This is the best way of giving back to a community that is supportive simply because of the service and of course, the food.
Paul, you are the best. I wish you all the success in the world.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

A friend and I had the lunch buffet a couple weeks ago and in her words the best Indian in Bakersfield. An adventurous eater I'm not but, I thought it was really good too.
I tried and liked the Tandoori chicken, chicken Makhni (in sauce with fresh cream amd tomatoes), Daal Makhni (a spicey lentil dish), Saag Paneer (mix of cheese and fresh spinach), Bhindi Masala (fresh okra w/onions and tomatoes), saffron rice, onion bhaji (kinda like onion rings but not), I scooped some of the above with warm garlic naan bread and saved the plain naan to put honey on for desert. The dinning room is small, the workers are pleasant and the cooks are out in the open.
Had dinner last week there and enjoyed the feel of the place even more. I'll be making it back soon.

The Desi Cafe was a pleasant surprise for a spur-of-the-moment dinner decision. The place still looks new, and is nicely furnished. The service staff was well dressed, even if the clientele was Bakersfield casual. We tried the Vegetarian Sampler platter and the Non-vegetarian Sampler platter to get a broad taste of menu options. The food was in fact excellent. We opted for "medium" spicy on the yellow lentil Daal, and the heat level was truly moderate, noiticable but not overpowering. The other dishes we ordered mild, since we didn't yet know the restaurant's range in definitions. The fresh bread was very good, the cilantro and tamarind chutneys with crispy lentil bread were a tasty warm up to the meal itself. Even the yogurt based dip and dressing was exceptionally good. The sampler platters were a good way to sample several entree options, and made very satisfying meals with more than most could eat in a single sitting. The cavalcade of flavors was not daunting, as is sometimes the case with a new cuisine, but rather an extravaganza of enjoyment from bite to bite. The single factor that hindered our dining enjoyment a bit was that the meal was slow to arrive. Perhaps because of the complexity of the multiple choices of the sampler platters. Others seemed to receive their food somewhat more quickly, so the menu choice may have made the difference. The service staff seemed to be a little slow, but overall the service was friendly, professional, and very good, as was the meal.
