Growing up I loved Chinese food and my sister Nancy loved Mexican. Every week my parents would allow us to pick our own restaurant, mostly to keep the peace so for my sister it was Mexicali and for me it was Great Castle. All these years later, I still love going to Great Castle. Maybe it's the old style Chinese ambiance or the ever changing Union Avenue landscape,
but mostly it's about the incredible food.
Us girls were so excited to hear we were going to Great Castle. We all love Chinese food and love the local flavors of Bakersfield. Rushing as always, I was late again, but carrying treats for each of my girlfriends from Sweet Surrenders, I was quickly forgiven.
Penny and I visit Great Castle with our very dear friend Jody who is a weekly patron of this fine restaurant. So, in Jody's honor we had to start with what we call pot stickers but the true name is Pan Fried Dumplings on the appetizer section. They are delicious, tender and juicy and a must order to start the amazing meal you will definitely have.
Lots of laughter followed as we each started naming off favorite Chinese dishes and found the common ingredients we all love was shrimp and chicken. We order Walnut Shrimp, Dai Chin Chicken, House Special Fried Rice, Moo-Shih Pork, House Special Sizzling Scallop and Beef and Kung Pao Shrimp. Wow! Do not order this much food unless you are a party of 12 or
more. But we just could not resist; we were hungry, having fun and wanting to let you all know some of their house specialties.
The Moo-Shih Pork is prepared at the table, served in a paper thin pancake and looks like a burrito. One order serves four people and don't forget the plum sauce to spread on top. It brings out the flavor of the pork. Walnut Shrimp came out next. I personally do not like nuts in my food so I went straight for just the shrimp. It is sweet and tasty. Kung Pao Shrimp is a favorite of mine because of all the spices and the Sizzling Scallop and Beef prepared also at the table is truly a house special. This dish is filled with broccoli, mushrooms and
snow peas for your required vegetables so not to feel guilty as you devour the tender beef and scallops.
Last but not least, the Dai Chin Chicken. This should start with House Specialty because it is excellent. Flavored with chilies and green onions, it is chunks of chicken served crisp, spicy and very juicy.
Great Castle is nostalgic and comfortable, excellent food and a welcoming atmosphere.
