After hearing rave reviews about their bread the quality of their sandwiches, I had to try this place out. So a friend and I stopped by right before they were about to close. They close rather earlier and don't open too early either, how do they get buisness?! Anyways, I ordered a turkey sandwich on their flatbread, a friend of mine had recommended it to me. As I looked through the menu of about 12-15 sandwiches, it seemed they didn't have much to them, and I was right. When I received my sandwich, I was amazed at the lack of meat put on the sandwich, yeah, their bread is awesome, but what's a sandwich without meat? Also, you had to make a meal a combo, which cost extra on top of the pricey sandwiches, including a drink you drop $10+ easily.
The girls in there seemed rather nice and jumpy, as teenagers, they should. The service was ok, and the atmosphere of the whole shop was rather unique, if gives you kind of a hickory farms sort of look and smell. Overall the food, wasn't up to par, but their shop and service wasn't bad.
I took away two stars, because they are supposed to be known for their sandwiches and I wasn't all that pleased.

I have very mixed feelings about my experience here. I have been to another Great Harvest Bread Co. in Thousand Oaks a handful of times. I have always loved my experience there and the bread is of course, delicious. I love their products and so I was especially pleased to find out that one was coming to Bakersfield. It took me awhile to get over there because it is on the complete opposite side of town from me, but I made it a point to try it when I was in the neighborhood recently.
It was morning and I had somewhere to be, but I had arrived quite a bit early and thought I would get some breakfast to kill some time. There was a sign outside of the door exclaiming, "Try our breakfast panini" and that sounded very appealing to me as my stomach grumbled in hunger. When I walked in the door it became apparent that on this particular morning the shop was understaffed. It was taking quite a bit of time for the two women working to take orders and then process those orders. When I finally approached the counter I was informed that they could not make the breakfast panini for me because they had no eggs (at 7:30 a.m. mind you). A little taken aback by this answer and still wanting a substantial and salty, not sweet, breakfast item, I ordered the BLT.
It took quite awhile for me to get my order and so I was left to observe the goings on. Phone calls kept coming in which distracted the two workers from being able to handle the physically present customers. Since there were only two of them, one had to make the coffee and sandwiches and stuff and kept telling customers that she couldn't help them, that they would have to wait for her coworker on the phone to help.
Once I did get my sandwich it was very delicious, as expected. Warm and toasty with the most wonderful bread. Although, the red onions in my BLT sandwich were a bit of a surprise.
So mixed feelings all around. Great food, but poor customer service.

The food was nothing special and it seemed as though the lady was bothered to take my order. I won't be going back any time soon.
