I have visited here almost a dozen times for the last 5 or more years. They have managed to feep it low key and rather homey. The dishes are competent, the sushi are well made and quite fresh.
Although it doesn't rank up there with many more in the central valley, I always come here when I have time in Bakersfield.

For cost vs. quality, there is no better place in Bakersfield to get sushi. Toro and Shogun Palace have slightly better sushi, but you're going to pay 20% more. If you're looking for value, you're going to want to hit up Izumo. You won't be disappointed.

I must say, Izumo Sushi is one of the best Japanese restaurants I have eaten at. Practically hidden between Hair Shapers and Food Maxx on Ming Avenue, Izumo Sushi, in my opinion, is very underestimated. A friend recommended this restaurant to me but I never really bothered to go. So, I invited a few of my friends and we all headed out to Izumo one Friday night.
We were greeted as soon as we walked in. There weren’t very many people there but that was perfectly fine with us. The walls were appropriately adorned with Japanese pictures. Everybody seemed to be interacting with each other, and the waitresses were all very friendly.
We chose to be seated at the grill and couldn’t wait to see what was in store for us. After we got our menus, we realized that most of the meals consisted of -one item along with a salad, soup, rice and side of vegetables. The main dishes included New York steak, chicken, shrimp, calamari, lobster and scallops. The pricier dishes were comprised of two of these items. Children’s’ dishes ranged from 7 to 10 dollars. It took us a while to decide what we wanted but the waitress was patient and friendly. She kindly got our drinks while we decided. After taking a second to look in our wallets, my friends and I decided to order the single item dishes. We honestly didn’t expect for the dishes to be this pricey. Single items ranged from 16 to 19 dollars and two item dishes all started at 21 dollars. My friends and I ordered the shrimp dinner, steak dinner, chicken dinner, and scallop dinner. After ordering, a chef immediately came over and introduced himself and started his performance. Spatulas and knives went flying up in the air along with ingredients. Out of nowhere, a big flame erupted from the grill and we were amazed. For me, it was the highlight of the night. I felt like a child on the Fourth of July. The chef was definitely skilled and knew what he was doing. How he managed to do that without burning off our eyebrows, I do not know. The best part was that he let us have a piece of the action. He called one of my friends to join him behind the grill and taught him to crack an egg by splitting it down the middle with a spatula while the egg was still in the air. We loved every minute of it. Not only was the food delicious but we also got some hands-on action. We asked to if we could each have a bit of each item and the chef agreed without hesitance. The teriyaki chicken was the best I’ve had in a while. The steak was grilled to perfection and had just the right amount of seasonings, and the shrimp was the best, in my opinion. It was to die for. I even had to steal a few from my friend’s plates. It was not until we had actually eaten the food that we realized that these dishes were worth every penny. We paid, and were kindly escorted to the door and invited to come back again; something I definitely plan to do in the near future.
