My girlfriend and I recently visited Jake's, we arrived at about lunch time, 1:00 or so. It was tough finding parking, seeing with did take separate cars, there is very limited parking, especially during a lunch rush. I, personally, thought it was going to be crowed seeing the amount of cars in the parking lot. As we entered, there was a line that was about to the door, and it was too bad, look as if most people that were parked had already been seated. One thing I like about Jake's is it's a sort of "cafeteria" style serving, and the decorations are really amazing, different concepts taken from Mexican and Western themes that were painted on the walls and random items hung on the wall, giving it that "home" feeling. Alright enough about their atmosphere. On to the food.
As we scanned the menu, I knew I wanted two things, beef tri-tip and that delicious, heart-melting cake. So I ordered a Beef Tri-Tip plate, with potatoes and rice for my sides. I also chose cornbread. My girlfriend ordered just a regular burrito, she wasn't feeling all that great, so she got something simple. But even just a regular burrito is extremely huge at Jake's, filled with beans, rice, and beef, combined with cheese and sour cream. As for me, almost everything was perfect, the only complaint I had, was that the rice was a little to dry for my taste, other than that, the meat and potatoes were great. The cornbread was interesting, not amazing, but alright. My girlfriend, even though her illness, said that the burrito was very good, and that the salsa included in it had a sort of sweet taste to it. She also mentioned that even though she was sick, she could still taste all the flavoring.
Now, the cake, probably the best they server at Jake's. It's absolultey amazing! The nice moist chocolate center that just explodes in your mouth and the nice creamy frosting that literally melts in your mouth, makes me want to just come and get a piece of cake, and that's it. I'm a chocolate cake fan, and this is deffinatley up there at the top.
I took away one star, because the rice was a too dry, the parking was overcrowded, and the floors were a tad bit too dirty, other than that, it was great food.

I was downtown late in the afternoon recently and took my family here. I like Jake's but being that I live in Rosedale, we don't go there too often. The food was good. I had the pitbeef sandwich and my wife had a chicken taco salad kind of thing. The sides were good; my son loved the broccoli salad. My only complaints would be the parking lot is small and the location can be difficult to leave going toward Truxtun during "rush hour". Also, the sandwiches would be better off on plates because the food sticks to the paper that surrounds the bread.

As for me & my family we really enjoy Jake's Tex Mex. I wouldn't say that everything there is on my favorites list. Still, they have a nice staff, a nice selection of food & the cake is very good. We generally find parking to be challenging and it is my opinion that the seating is uncomfortable.
Now to what I really like about Jake's. Tri-Tip Sandwiches are always tasty. They make an awesome side salad with lots of tasty toppings and I think they have some of the best 1000 Island dressing I have ever tatsed. The taco salads are also very good. I think they are too big and a little pricey though. I suggest ordering it and splitting it. The iced tea is always fresh and the serve great cold beer as well. I have never experienced dry tri-tip at Jake's, although it is possible that they like anyplace else could have a bad day. They also make really good beans and jalepeno cornbread.
Jake's is certainly worth a try.

I give an establishment at least two visits befor making an opinion;however, only after one visit to JAKE'S TEX-MEX-CAFE was more than enough for me. I did give it one more attempt and feel i got ripped off each time. Oh well that's me.

Great Santa Maria BBQ here! Try their Nacho's with Fritos and you can order 1/2 and 1/2 on the meats. Clean and spotless most of the time. Gets busy at noon but always quick.

Took the family to Jakes for the first time. I have been before about a half dozen times but it has been a few years. We never added it to our list of places to eat as a family because of the Tex Mex in the name. Not a big fan of Tex Mex. Jakes is not really Tex Mex as i have come to know that style of food.
I ordered a 2 item combo (pit beef & chicken) and the girls (wife and teen daughter) had the pit beef sandwiches.
I have to say that I always threaten to order the Tri-Tip but I can't get past the grayness of it. I need a little pink at the very least to my Tri-Tip.
I chose the green salad with bleu cheese dressing and was surprised by the freshness and mix of the greens. The tortilla that I was given came wrapped in foil....now that i think about it, it had become one with the foil. I am sure that this is an afterthought to them but it would be nice if they could be served a little fresher.
The meats...Nice cubes of chicken but it was a bit dry and salty. The pit beef better, juicy and full of flavor without being over-seasoned.
The sandwiches...This is the best thing I have ever gotten at Jakes and the girls loved them as well. 2 fresh soft seeded rolls are stuffed with the pit beef. They chose cheese only and let me tell you it is simply delicious. The girls brought home the equivalent of a whole sandwich (MMMmmm LEFTOVERS)
The Cake...Jakes cake has reached legendary status...but I am not sure why (maybe it's because of how big it is). It's good but not great. This time it was a bit dry.
I would not hesitate to go back to Jakes for a sandwich (One of these days I will have the Tri-Tip) or one of their salads (have had them in the past) but I still don't see it making our family list of regular places to eat.

I love Jake's Pit Beef. Sandwiches, frito boats, taco salads...you can put it on anything and you have a sensational meal! I like that they will prepare your dish any way you like it, so picky eaters can off the tomatoes or onions or whatever. Also, it seesm like healthier fare than a typical burger joint, fresher, too. And, of course, the cake can shoot you straight to culinary heaven.
I deducted a star because the parking is not just a nuisance, it's a real hardship, especially if you are disabled. They have one handicapped spot, and if it's taken, wheelchair folk hafta park miles away like everyone else. I hate to be the one to say it, but the parking problem can make me skip Jakes for something less fabulous. A location with better parking would be quite a customer service.

I have only had their Salad Light with Tri-tip. It was unique since it had marninaded broccoli and a pasta salad mixed into it. I loved that I could have them customize it with their add-ins like tortilla strips and cheeses.

When it's hard to find parking and a line is out the door an hour before the normal lunch rush should begin, that should be a sign! I wanted to eat light, so I got the pit beef sandwich and salad. I passed the cake up this time, but the word is that it's the best. I'm a fan of double chocolate though, and the white icing kind of scared me. I'll try it next time though. So what I did get... the pit beef was great, the sesame seed sub roll they put it on looked nice and fresh but I never eat bread when I'm having pit beef. Their sauce was good, a sweet ketchup based sauce with a hint of cumin and liquid smoke. Worked well with the pit beef, since the beef wasn't as moist as I had hoped it would be. The salad was ok, had some yellow leaves in there and the lady put too much dressing on it so by the time I got to the bottom of the small bowl, it was more like soup and I couldn't eat it because the leaves were all soggy. The decor is nice, reminds me of AZ with the mist outside. It was pretty packed inside and noisy so I don't know if they had music but it was a good experience. I'd go again and try something different next time, perhaps the garlic chicken. And the cake.

We LOVE Jakes and make a visit there at least once a month. The nachos are delish, and the chocolate cake is to-die-for. Be sure and look for the BIGGEST piece!
