My family only purchases its books from one store in town, and that is the locally owned and operated Russo's Books at The Marketplace. The Russo family and their staff are top notch in their expereince, knowledge, and service to their customers.
Not only do they have the latest hard over and softcover books that arrive on Tuesdays, they also have a large selection of periodicals, sports cards, and a full fledged comic book store in the back. If they are missing a book of choice, they will hunt it down for you and get it within a week (my experiences have always been positive on book searches)
What Russo's does so well is cater to Bakersfield. From local author signings, kids reading clubs, and the occasional midnight extravaganza (Harry Potter for example). Russo's is always about Bakersfield and their love for this town shows. Yes, Russo's may not be able to offer those super, chain store discounts, but I can handle not saving $1.35 on a book as long as I can keep Russo's business going.
