Just visited this place tonight after seeing the "open" sign as I have driven passed over the last week.
My wife and I would probably consider ourselves "foodies" so we are always excited to try out a new restaurant. I checked this spot first to see what kind of food they had and whether or not it was any good. I was forced to go in blind, as you can see I am the first to review.
I guess you would call this food California cooking. We ordered the shrimp and scallop ceviche as a starter ($15) and then she ordered the Sauteed salmon with a citrus - dill sauce over a "potato hash" ($20) and I ordered the Jumbalaya ($17).
I guess the food is the most important part of the review so I will say that I thought the food was very well prepared. The shrimp in my dish were not overcooked and they were huge. The sauce was just the right amount of spicy-ness and very flavorful. The only problem I had with my dish was that it was served over pasta and there was not enough pasta to fully enjoy the sauce. There must have been about 10 pene noodles in my dish. They could have addedf more pasta for almost no money and I would have felt like I got a better deal for my money. My wife's fish was cooked to order (medium - and, therefore NOT overcooked. She liked it with the potatos with each bite as did I. The sauce on the fish was suttle and she felt it needed to be stronger. I disagreed and felt like it was fine. The ceviche was so-so. I liked the flavor alright but I think it could have had a little more "herb" flavoring (maybe some basil and/or mint). One problem we had with the meal was that the ceviche was supposed to be served with plantain chips. Ours was served with fried flour tortilla chips. It was an OK substitute but I would have preferred being notified ahead of time. No one ever told us we were not eating plaintains but I think they are pretty easy to tell from tortilla chips. Secondly they ran out of one of the three sauces for steaks. I did not want to try a steak because I don't see it as a real measure of a place's abilities. I was also a little surprised that they did not have any specials either. The menu was pretty simple (almost too simple for me as I would have liked a few more choices)
Now, for the rest of my impression:
Decor: Think dark. Black chairs, black ceilings, black linens, black dressed wait-staff. It was "hip" I guess. The place is pretty large with a large, clear wine storage room on the far side from where we were seated. The tables are huge. If you go as a couple it will be a little less than romantic, but you will have a lot of room to order tons of dishes. A simple vase with an orchid (real) was the decoration for the table. There is some metalic-type art on the wall and the room has some cool-looking pendant lighting as well. We were there early enough that we did not get to see how dark it would be when the sun is fully down.
Ambiance: I think this is where the place can make some major improvements. It is almost like they don't really know who their target patrons are. The place looks like an upscale eatery and the price matches that goal. They have a bar with several folks wearing t-shits. Semi-loud 80's music piped overhead. I liked hearing Purple Rain (I am a child of the 80's ;-) BUT I DID NOT LIKE LISTENING TO BACK IN BLACK while I trying to enjoy an evening out.
PRICE: Our bill for the evening came to $65 including tax and a near 20% tip. We did not have anything to drink except water and no desert. The portions were pretty small and it is basically a-la-cart. I left satisfied but not full. The wine list had basically one wine by the glass for each category otherwise you were buying the bottle and those ran in the $40 to $50 range. If we had ordered salads and/or deserts w/ a cocktail or glass of wie we would have EASILY bested $100.
Should you go? Sure, everyone should try a new restaurant this good. Come ready to spend some money though. The little glitches they had should hopefull be worked out over the next few weeks.
