My aunt and uncle were supposed to meet me at Black Angus for dinner. I got to the restaurant and was unsure if I was early, or if they had already been seated. I asked the hostess if she could check if the other party members had arrived by checking her reservations list. She said that it was a slow night, so she has not even been looking at that list. She said that I could just walk around the restaurant and stare at unsuspecting customers like a douche while trying to locate my party members. The nerve- why am I doing her job for her?
Since it was our first time at the restaurant, the hostess said that we would get a free appetizer. We ordered the Crispy Fried Garlic-Pepper Zucchini as our starter. It was very crispy and delicious when dipped in the cucumber sauce. We also noshed on the molasses bread that was stale and had no molasses taste to it.
My uncle ordered the crab cakes as his main course. He liked his dish, but I did not since there was too much of a mustard taste. I had the Grilled Fresh Salmon with two sides: Creamed Spinach and Sweet Potato Fries with molasses dipping sauce. The fish was very dry with no taste, so I asked for some kind of sauce. The first side was sautéed spinach covered with a congealed blanket of cheese, the latter tasted like day old fries, and the dipping sauce was Crisco that had a maple taste. Yuckkkkkkkk! My aunt ordered the 5 oz. Lobster Tail partnered with the 6 oz. Filet Mignon, Green Beans sautéed with bacon, and the Garlic Mashed Potatoes. Her first side was not sautéed with bacon but tasted overly boiled in water so that they were limp. She tried to spoon some of the latter onto my plate, but her spoon was stuck in the huge rock-shaped mass of the potatoes that were pitiful.
The beverage glasses were bare for moments at a time while the waitresses all seemed to converge for chit chatter with others at the hostess station. Too many blondes in one spot calls for thirsty customers. When our waitress did surface, she asked if we were done with our meal while she simultaneously cleared our plates. When we got the check, we saw that the “free appetizer” as mentioned by the hostess was actually charge onto our bill. The waitress said that the free appetizer was actually an order of Ranch House Potato Chips. The ranch dressing and bacon bits made the chips soggy. I guess free isn’t that great at all. We will not be back! Hungry Hunter, here we come!

hard to find the Black Angus to leave a review, as it's listed under an old and the no longer existing name of Stuart Anderson's Black Angus. no question, the best steaks in town. although there are other places that serve an excellent quality/value lunch, the waitresses/waiters here are far and away the best and really make the difference. (i'm too old to go for the politically correct term "servers").
just noticed the sidebar with several questions:
since we moved to the mountains about 5 years ago, about an hour to the NE of Bakersfield, the Black Angus was among the first of my discoveries when going to town for hardware, groceries, gasoline, etc. have had lunch there just about every week for the last five years.
service has always been wonderful, and the atmosphere is comfortable and first-class.
my money's worth? prices fair? have eaten in several restaurants in LA and paid 3 times as much for just so-so food and indifferent service. much prefer the Black Angus in Bakersfield.
will i go back again? another commute to LA next week, but a no-brainer. of course i'll be back.

We love going to Stuart Anderson's, and appreciate the coupons and other specials. Service is almost always good; we occasionally ask a different server for something we are missing if necessary. The filet and prime rib are excellent, and seafood is also very good. Any concerns brought to the manager are promptly addressed. When we make reservations we rarely have to wait more than 5 minutes to be seated. We recommend this restaurant!
