This place sucked the one night my girlfriend and I went and that will be the last time we ever go there. I too had heard good things about this place and expected it to be really good once we arrived – a progressive and refreshing décor for Bakersfield. Unfortunately, it ended there.
The only server (waitress) that night was not to good at here job, had too many tables to handle with such lack of experience, or just had lack of interest in her job. I think she’s never been a food server before and the owners create a bad work environment and trained her poorly. She twice forgot to bring us a round of drinks and other items requested.
I felt the Miso soup was tasteless at best (or I’m just spoiled by Miyoshi’s very tasty Miso), and the beef fried rice was a joke - also very tasteless...again, I’m spoiled by Miyoshi’s, who has awesome fried rice and all around good food/sushi and good service. I’ve also traveled to and eaten in many part of Asia, including Japan and China, and all around the US in cities like San Francisco, LA and NY, where many fine Japanese and Chinese restaurant are abound. Now, I almost decided to stop eating our food and send it back, but we were both very hungry and had somewhere else to be so we decided to finish and just let the owner/manger know how we felt and maybe give the place a second chance. I also overhead another couple commenting to each other about how little flavor their food had.
Unfortunately, when politely and discretely trying to let the manager/owner, whomever it was, know how we felt about the food and service, both the Asian female and male - whomever they were persons in-charge - became extremely rude, defensive and dismissive of my attempts to offer a critique, telling me their Miso soup was renowned Miso soup liked by all and that it was just me, not their food that was the problem - then the female walked off and waiving her hands up in the air at me – dismissing any further comments or attempts by me to finish my sentence. I never even got to the rice also sucking, so I can imagine how well that would have went.
So, that is my experience and rating of this joint. Bad!

Outside of going all the way to Seattle, Toro has some of the freshest sushi / sashimi I've ever had. Service isn't the fastest, but that gives you time to enjoy the company and decor. The waitress who served my table was very friendly, but couldn't make any recommendations because she wasn't a "sushi fan". Which was alright, because I wanted to try the sushi and sashimi mixed plate: 12 sashimi and 20 sushi for around $40. Between the miso soup (again, some of the best I've had), salad, and fish, fed my son and I well. The fatty tuna melted in our mouths, and the salmon was almost mousse-like in texture. The big surprise was the squid sushi: it was like placing a stick of butter in your mouth, the texture was other-worldly.
All in all, a great visit. I'll be back again and again if they continue serving such high-quality food. Perhaps one of these times I'll go alone to try the sake! ;)

Since this restaurant opend few month back, I've been dining here at least couple of times every week. The atmosphere is unlike any other Japanese restaurants, and they have excellent food.
Due to the popularity of this place, sometime, we waited as much as 30 minutes before seated, but when our foods came, it was always worth the wait.
Last night, I went there with my girlfriend, and they had live DJ playing excellent selection of music, and we had a blast.
I strongly recommand this place to anyone who loves excellent sushi, friendly service at great atmosphere.
