This was my first time eating here. I ordered the club sandwich, and I thought it was really tasty. One of the proprietors encouraged me to try the rose tea, which I also enjoyed. Between the sandwich, the tea, and some complimentary chips, I got out of there spending less than $7. There are many sandwich shops downtown where you would spend much more money if you ordered something comparable.
It's a cozy spot that appears to still be a work in progress. The only problem I found with the store was that you can't dine in if you have more than a couple of people because the tables are so small. Other than that, I'd recommend going here, and I'll be going back as well.

I stopped by for the first time today ,because a friend was bragging on their vegan ice cream. It was based on an almond/cashew base on like the soy base that Trader Joes sells. I had a Rootbeer float that was excellent. My friends enjoyed the salad bar and mock chicken salad sandwiches. They also had a large selection of organic and vegan products for sale. Finally, down town has a corner store that sells soy and rice milk when I find myself short for the morning ceral or coffee.

From its humble beginiings a short time ago. Elaines has really stepped up to the plate and offered Bakersfield a wonderful vegetarian - vegan option for breakfast and lunch. Their menu at first was extremely limited, now they have specials and a great inexpensive salad bar.
I have had the mock chicken sandwitch, tofu - mock eggsalad, club sandwiich, & saladbar . These were great. I really like the salad bar a great value either a small or large plate. Service was great.
Least I forget, the vegan frozen "ice cream" ( non dairy) is to die for. You have to try it. I have tried chocolate, vanilla, pecan & strawberry. This is not a soy product so no aftertaste.
Elaines, also sells a nice selection of vegi meats and other healthy options in cans or in the freezer. It is my understanding they are going to carry more fresh fruits and vegetables. I also heard that they will be starting cooking classes. I'll certainly check it out.
Give them a try. I hope downtown merchants discover them . For those of us that work downtown ( I work on 19th & Eye) this is a refreshing addition to lunchtime options.

I grew up eating meat and dairy products...in fact, i still do. As a result, I have not been very attracted to vegan and vegetarian food; however, after eating at Elaine's Cafe and Market, I am very attracted to vegan and vegetarian food...so much so, that I want to marry it some day....that is if I don't find a wife first. Anyways, the food is so stinkin' good that I would recommend everyone to go to Elaine's and eat...try the ice cream too!!!
