Just went there for lunch with my mom. She got the Mediterranean veggie sandwich and I got the Mediterranean chicken. Hers was fresh, great bread, delicious hummus. Mine was one awesome focaccia with soy chicken and hummus and sun dried tomatoes. Both full of flavor. I also got a strawberry lemonade that tasted super fresh and not too sweet. We got a scoop of peach ice cream to go and it too was awesome, so creamy and rich.

not good! I had BBQ soycurls.. the soycurls were over cooked and crusty, the bread it came on was stale and the coleslaw was purple!! coleslaw is purple when it sits out for too long.. that makes me wonder! the service was horrible.. how can you run a bussiness with only 3 people???? I waited a very long time for my lunch. The food was very over priced and the place was a total mess. The floors look like they have never been cleaned and the place looks like its falling apart!!!
Elaine’s Cafe & Market 's Response:
My husband and I own Elaine's Cafe and we take great pride in providing Kern County with the first and only vegan cafe. It is obvious from this reviewer that there is something more than meets the eye. We have been very blessed to receive many good reviews and have very loyal customers. We provide our vegan food to local hospitals and many of our customers our health-challenged. The opening of this cafe is our gift back to the community.
It is not coincidental that djames review is nearly identical to the review written by BarbaraE on www.yelp.com of same date, which we would ask you to read as well.
We pride ourselves on customer service and BarbaraE or djames would not know how many people work for us. They also would never have access to the food prep area and furthermore BarbaraE's comments that there was "two month old" food is ridiculous, epecially considering the fact that on April 14, 2009 we passed our third inspection by the County Health Department and received our third "A" rating. BarbaraE's comments that the place was "falling apart", "floors dirty" and "ghetto" is not supported by the fact that Elaine's Cafe just won Best Renovation by the Downtown Business Association. The comments by BarbaraE that I did not wash my hands before preparing food is unfounded. My husband runs the register and takes the money. I deliver food to tables. We have staff that prepares the food, so there is no contact between money, food and my hands.
The remainder of the comments by these "reviewers" should not even need comment. However, on record I will say we obviously do not serve old food or store old food and they would not even have access to areas where food is stored. However, the County Inspector does and our "A" Rating is proof enough.
The fact that our business continues to grow in these hard economic times shows that we at Elaine's Cafe are serving our customers and community well.

AMAZING!!!! My husband and I stopped by for the first time last night and the owners graciously stayed open late so that we could eat. The Thompsons' were very hospitable and we enjoyed quite the conversation. We had the Mexican Salad, Mediterranean Sandwhich, Strawberry Lemonade, and Rose Tea. Everything tasted great and we left feeling satisfied. But the BEST part was the ice creme.....we got to sample a little bit of everything. I enjoyed the coconut the most. It was my understanding that they will soon be expanding with a bakery and adding more hot food and raw items to their menu. I can't wait! Elaine's is definitely worth a try for anyone looking for a great alternative to the usual junk. The owners are doing an amazing job and definitely know what they're doing. We will absolutely be back again and again!

My fiancee and I went to Elaine's for lunch today. We were met by Tracy and promptly asked if we had been there before. Not knowing that this was a Vegan eatery I was glad we asked or maybe it would have been a bigger surprise to find out that I would have not been able to tell the difference. I order the special which was an open faced chicken BB Que like sandwich and a small salad. The sandwich which was piled high with a tofu BBQ Chicken and Cole slaw. It was wonderful. If I did not know is wasn't chicken I could not tell the difference other than the texture. The small salad which was able to make myself from the salad bar was great. All the vegi's were fresh and the dressings are all home made. If you are short on time and need a quick lunch this is the place to go and get great service and great tasting Vegan food. NICE JOB Tracy!!!!! FYI they are adding a icecream counter in the near future. (non dairy of course)
