The reason Wool Growers is a mainstay is because of the great food, and lots of it, and the great service. The owner, Jinny, is not only a sweetheart, but she has assembled a top rate crew that tends to your every need. The pickled tongue is excellent and the ox tails melt off the bone. Best soup (mix in those beans and salsa) and french fries in town.
We had tri-tip on a recent Friday and it was very tasty. It's why I've been going to this restaurant for all 29 years I've been in Bakersfield.

Bad service! The staff is very full of themselves. They will take away your dishes without even asking if you are done.

This is where it's at. Weither you eat in the front room or in the back, it's always good. Remember to wear your stretchy pants because your going to get full here. If you want to try something different ask for the Ceaser salad rather then the traditional salad. I personally love the Brochette of Beef but everything on the menu is awesome. If you have a change have some blue cheese for dessert! Also they have a fabulous cookbook for sale at the register. Drinks are always a great way to fill your time while waiting for a table. Remember they are closed on Sundays! And they now take online reservations. http://www.woolgrowers.net/...

The food is over rated...big time. There staff if rude most of the time and hard to get ahold of on a crowded day. I only go there on special occasions-not a regular.

Hey--I agree that Woolgrowers is an institution, and the atmosphere is great as well--been going here 30+ years. . .But. . .the food is really falling off. The Lamb chops are small and dry, the Garlic Chicken greasy. Try Pyrenees for food and atmosphere, or Benjis for friendliness and awesome food as well. Woolgrowers is more hype than the real thing anymore.

By far and away on of the best restaurants in Bakersfield. Great food and great Service. The staff makes you feel right at home. The menu selection is great running the gamit from lamd, beef, fish and fowl. You must be hungry to eat here. It is served family style with bread, salsa, beans, soup, pasta, cold vegatable and the best french fries in Bakersfield. Do not forget to order the hard jack chees on the side. Also great blue cheese.

We have been going to Woolgrowers for years as my children have grown and 11 grandchildren have come along. We do all our family affairs there (in the private banquet room) and we are very happy with the assistance from all of the workers as well as the owners. We just had our parents 70's Wedding Anniversary Party there and it was great...Italians as we are...we love the wine as well as the all the food. Children are always welcome.

When my wife and I were first looking to move up here, I looked up Basque food on the internet and found Wool Growers. For the longest time, this was the only restaurant we knew how to get to--but that was okay. Wool Growers served as our introduction to Bakersfield's Basque cuisine, and though we don't get over there as much as we used to, it will always hold a special place in our stomachs.
This was where we were introduced to the concept of "the set-up." Mind you, this was at lunch, and we had no way to know just how much food was going to appear on the table. Cabbage soup, beans, salsa, fries, spaghetti, stew, oh my god... Yum!
Yes, sometimes things can be a little dry, but other things are good, hearty, and reliable. The soup is really good, the real, old-fashioned fries are amazing--no way these are made with vegetable oil--and the ox-tail stew is awesome. And soaking up the ox-tail stew sauce with those fries? Nirvana.
I'm hungry now.

Absolutely outstanding restaurant. I can't get enough of just about everything they have here, but my all-time favorite is the ox tail stew. Ask for more of anything and they'll bring it out to you.
