Discussion Topic: Shade trees in Bakersfield   Posted By

Why don't the Supervisors or the powers that be insist that developers are not through with the development project until shade trees are planted?? The silly (cheap?) trees that are planted are a waste of a tree, water and time. Apparently, some of the developers live out of town, and couldn't care less about our comfort, but how much more money would be spent if going to a local mall/market/development wasn't a race between the car and the hot pavement. And coming out after shopping is magnified many times, by the sun bearing down on the car.  Today, I almost stopped at Target to shop, and reconsidered, when there was nothing but blasting heat, and no shade in sight.  Oh, yes, they plant trees,  but nothing for shade.  Can we complain and to whom? And how many of us will be heard?  Will they think this is one more gripe, or consider it as a way to cool the environment and use the tree to counter some of the pollution problems?  This has been in the news recently, but quickly forgotten, as just one more thing to deal with, one more stressor to put up with, because NO ONE cares.  Who do we complain to?  Council? Supervisors? Representatives?  And who will pass the buck, or use the old stand-by excuse..."there isn't enough money"!  Strange how they can come up with plans for sports arenas and sport teams at Cal State, and other projects, worth thousands and millions, can be funded, but not a shade tree???   Oranges and apples comparisons? I think not.  Quality of life is for all, not just a chosen few.  And the elderly, sick, and general public all deserve to be comfortable. We DON'T NEED NEW PROJECTS if there are no shade treese penciled in, and later planted!!!
