Happy Birthday, from one military wife to another. My husband just returned home from a year in Iraq. He left 4 months after we were married. We missed our birthdays together and all our "first" holidays as husband and wife, and it looks like he may be gone again, soon, so I understand how you feel. You show amazing strength, courage, and pride, and that is truely commendable.

Nostalgia

Most of us can relate to the refusal to give something up, even if only temporarily.

Recently I went through closets and drawers and shelves gathering "stuff" in anticipation of making the last (well, almost) run to Goodwill. It's widely accepted that if an item isn't worn in two years, it's time to part with it. The brutal truth was that it was well past time to part with most of the items I had gathered together.

There was a black sweater smothered with gold and silver sequins -- perfect for a New Year's Eve night out. I was all set to put it in with my Goodwill package, and I remembered that my daughter had worn that sweater once; we both loved it. It became a "Goodwill" sweater for her. She is young enough for those New Year's Eve dinners and nights on the town; her father and I are content to watch an old movie on TV and go to bed early.

So, though I'm parting with that sweater I'd liked so much, I'm not really parting with it. Perhaps she, too, will pack it away carefully in a box or drawer; and perhaps someday she, too, will clear out closets and boxes and make a contribution of a fancy black sweater with gold and silver sequins to one of her own daughters.

Enjoy your "bundles of boy"; think of their possible sense of closeness simply by virtue of wearing the same items. Perhaps you will look at your baby and do a double-take, thinking he is his brother.

Most of all, think of someone else's little "bundle of boy" who will be surrounded by a feeling of the love and care that went into the very fabric of the clothing he's wearing.

Kathi & Karen- Congrats and how thrilled we are to share this historic day with you. I have known you both since you were pups in love 12 years ago. You have known Vanessa and I since we were pups in love...we still are and forever will be.
To share this day, my birthday, of all days- is the greatest gift I have ever known. To legal wed the people we love- to know civil liberty as it was meant to be, and to have the day as peaceful and beautiful as we all have dreamed- this is all icing on our cake!
The day, the media, the hooplah- none of this can even compare to what we feel in our hearts. Like you said Kathi- "Cloud 29!" How honored I am to wed Vanessa amidst all of the progressive, fair and ethical people who were present. The ministers willing to give of their time. The PFLAG group keeping everyone hydrated. The media giving everyone their due respect, and yet, taking piece of our day and commemorating it into history. What a day.
We have loved like all other people. We have lost like all other people. But today we WED like all others. We, for this moment in time, are recognized as legally wed- as living , breathing, human beings, allowed to finally share love Legally.
No matter where the November election takes us, we will always have this day. This day in Kern County, where the county clerk bows out, yet only one lone subdued protester quietly stood with her sign, and was quickly put in her place- far away from justice and happiness. Far away from the positive emotions of the day, far away from the emotion of LOVE. Politics didn't stop this. Hatred didn't stop this. The so-called religious didn't stop this. This day was meant to happen.
We were meant to have our day in the sun. To share love- to feel love and kindness all around us- and to give it right back. Almost biblical.
So- to all of the couples who we are honored to share this day with- May we wish you long love and prosperous marriages which- by known statistics alone should drop Kern county's divorce rate significantly over time.
I urge all of the couples out there who were afraid of hatred, afraid of angst and protest, and thus didn't say their vows- The time is now. You have until November to take your leap of faith. No one can stop you from loving. No one will ever stop us from loving. Not even the backwards thought and narrow minds we think control our world can stop love.
To K & K - may we all grow old in our marraiges together-
To all the ministers and help from all over the valley- may your message today carry on and be heard by all those unwilling to accept Civil liberties as much as the change it takes to protect them-

And to Vanessa, LOVE of MY LIFE- just like I vowed to you today- I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine. You are. You will always be. NOTHING will ever change that. You are the axis of my world, and the air I breathe- and I will work at this love, cherish this love, and keep this bond forever sacred, as marriage should be.

Peace LOVE and Liberty to us all.

Ann Barnett, whether or not anyone realizes it, accomplished something wonderful today, even if not in the way she may think.

I went downtown today. Sad to say, I do not enjoy trying to park downtown, and I saw no parking nearby. I did see where the weddings were taking place, however, and I sent some loving magick their way. I saw no protesters.

The only reason I could see the weddings is because Ann Barnett did what she did. The sight of it set my heart aglow, and I cried soft happy tears all the way home.

The sun seems a littler brighter today, the breeze a little more refreshing and invigorating. Beautiful feelings are in the air for me.

What Ann Barnett has done, unintentionally or not, is given love a chance by allowing it to be seen out in the open rather than taking place unseen inside a county building.

Love always wins, when it is given the chance to be seen.

If you don't like Conservatives and Christians...fine. But don't make false arguments and try to use the Bible to justify your lifestyle. The Bible speaks very clearly about homosexuality. You're attempt to twist scripture is a very weak one.
The love David had for Jonathan is translated as Brotherly love. Others translate it as the bond soldiers form in battle. You can't just make David gay because it fits your lifestyle. I'll just let scripture speak. Hopefully you will listen to it with an open mind.
"Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality." 1 Cor 6:9.
"the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine," 1 Tim 1:10. .
And probably the most damning evidence in scripture against homosexuality.
"The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.

Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.

Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them." Romans 1: 18-32

Ridiculous. You really have no clue what is going on over in Iraq. The native Iraqi by and large isn't "protecting thier homeland" from our troops. It's al Qaeda...it's the fanatics that are blowing themselves up in marketplaces and schools. They're not defending Iraq, they're simply taking thier fanatacism where the Americans are...which is in Iraq. If we weren't in Iraq, perhaps they would be bringing it to our home soil...hence the term "defending our freedom." ACLU???? I actually laughed at that until I realized you were serious. The ACLU defends NAMBLA...which by itself says enough about the group to know that it's not fighting for anything that you could call "American."

I was a kid in the North Shafter Farm Labor Camp about the time the tent tops were being replaced by more permanent wood structures. I didn't know I was poor at the time. All the adults I knew were just like my parents, hard working farm labor people, none were lawyers, businessmen or doctors. It was nice when the great center lawn of the camp was flood irrigated, it became a kid's water wonderland with about a foot of water to splash in.

That paint job reminds me of some of the cool tiger paint schemes some foreign governments have used on their aircraft for public performances or war games.

I'm surprised the 117 is being retired "so soon" (soon when compared to other U.S military aircraft still in action). What's the timeframe for increased production and wide deployment of the F-22 and F-35?

The Bakersfield Musical Theatre production of CATS should not be missed by any theatre goer. A new standard has been set with respect to the quality of local theatre. The dancing, singing, and acting are as good as you will find anywhere with maybe the exception of professional Broadway shows. There appear to be many new faces which display talent to an extremely high degree. The dancers are gifted and unique. Outstanding tap, jazz, and even ballet are on display with great enthusiam and polish. These dancers are about as good as it gets. The entire cast is extremely professional and quite entertaining. The acting is also quite entriguing with members of the cast having the ability to change moods and expressions in a very convincing way. There is a high degree of energy throughout the production and I mean PRODUCTION. Where has all of this talent been? These dancers and singers are fantastic! Kudos to all who helped bring this show together!! If ever there were a show to be held over this is the one!!!!!

I hadn't heard from her for several years...maybe even ten. Then, today I got a Sympathy letter from my oldest sister (1 of 3 older sisters) Poem sent to me by my oldest sister, Jenna Allen who lives in another state. This poem was given to her after our Father passed away. I am sharing it here, just because:

Miss me but let me go
when I come to the end of the road
and the sun has set for me.
I want no rites in a gloom filled room!
Why cry for a soul set free;
miss me a little- but not too long
and not with your head bowed low;
remember the love that we once shared.
Miss me- but let me go.
For this is a journey we all must take
and each must go alone;
it's all a part of the Master's plan.
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart,
go to the friends we know
and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds.
Miss me- but let me go.

Students prove theories at KC Science Fair

Students Prove Theories at Kern County Science Fair
The caption below is incorrect and was attached to my daughter's picture in the story about The Kern County Science Fair.
Actually in many of the science fair projects students hypothesize one thing but through their data and trials find out that their hypothesis is incorrect. This is part of the learning process and does not make their science fair project a poor one. Many scientists hypothesize one thing but have a completely different outcome and they can learn about more this way.
(The project my daughter worked on was not showing how algae could reduce acid rain but, the affect of acid rain on the algae cellular structure.) In turn we found out that algae could help reduce CO2 from large power plants and be turned into biofuel reducing the need for fossil fuel, which is what creates acid rain.
El Tejon School 7th-grader Melissa Gore, won in Middle School Division Pharmacology and Biochemistry category at the Kern County Fair with her project showing how algae can reduce acid rain.

Don't get me wrong I love the Prime Cut, but I miss the old location and the type of service it would bring. I would go there quite often, got to know the gals behind the counter, and the food was always amazing. The new location, along with the change in service and high prices has limited my patronage of the restaurant. I’m sure this has been more than offset by the increase in traffic from other customers, so kudos to them. A couple of items seem like decent deals, such as the tri tip meal. But others don’t seem to match, like a lone $10 sandwich. A drink and fries will quickly get you to near $20. The $2-3 dollar overall increase matched with the switch to full service tipping was just a bit too big of a jump. The sandwiches seem smaller with less love put into them, but I don’t know if it is true or just my mind doing the math.

I haven’t been to the new Famous Daves, or any of them for that matter in at least a couple of years. I used to go there now and then when I was living in the Midwest. I will wait until the hype dies down a bit. I agree it isn’t worth a 50min wait, especially if all you want is a sandwich. It’s not really fair to compare the chicken sandwich to Prime Cut’s tri-tip meal. If you go there, I recommend trying their actual dinner plates. Go for the BBQ ribs or their wings. My experience was always enjoyable, and the prices seemed fair. Like any place, get something outside your comfort zone that will tease your senses.

Surely you can't be serious. Ever since Prime Cut's move to the new location, everything about the place has suffered. The service is slow and rude and the prices are outrageous. $10 for a tri-tip sandwich with no sides? That takes some nerve and arrogance. And the chicken that you rave about is so dry that my dog won't eat the leftovers. I was a dedicated patron of the old location on Stockdale Highway, but ever since the move, Prime Cut has lost all of that "hometown realness" that you rave about. I am not a fan of chain restaurants usually, but Famous Dave's has the best bbq in town, bar none.

Bakersfield police vs. gang members

The only people who will ever know exactly what happened are the witnesses. One of them is now dead, the others are police officers involved in the shooting or perhaps local residents. Each have incentive to lie about who did what.

Let's face it though, we give police officers the benefit of the doubt in these situations. I mean, why did this guy have a gun in the first place, and why did he EVER point it at a police officer. That's suicide in this town...

Having said that, I have personally heard a police officer on the gang squad tell how he instigated a shoot-out with a known gang member, and this is an officer that had been involved in numerous shootings (suspects ended up dead). The officer was at a community event and had been drinking, but I have no reason to doubt the truth of his story.

One way frame the whole "gang" problem is to substitute "lower income blacks and hispanics" for the word gang. Then it becomes quickly apparent that the "gang" and "vice" squads are manifestations of institutionalized racism. White society authorizes its agents (gang squad officers) to threaten, harass, and combat the grumbling underclasses in their own neighborhoods.

Just one more tragic incident among countless others in the ineffective, corrupt, and inept governemnt initiative called "The War on Drugs."

The whole situation sucks. Seriously. But I honestly don't think there was any conspiracy here. The whole world just hurts all the time. Unfortunately some of us will be casualties of it regardless of our involvement.

I'm not a law or forensics expert. I hope just like you that the truth is uncovered, but please don't allege a conspiracy when the forensics team reports their findings. Good day, friend.

My thinking to the question of who shot the officer, is Leon. As to how he got shot in the face, you usually look towards what you are shooting at & we already know he fired at officers. Shot while on the ground? where did witnesses say this? I haven't seen that anywhere yet. As for being hit in the vest, most people will aim for center mass, thats what the vest covers. BPD offiers carry 40 s&w semi-auto pistols not 38's, how could he be shot by an officer if they recovered 38 slugs from his vest & leg? The weapon shown didn't look in that bad of shape to me, I shoot ones way worse than that at the range, Gangs (at least when I was keeping up on them here) carry what they can get, I know 2 friends on mine back in the 90's were shot with 22 pistols that were junk.

Bakersfield police vs. gang members

AS THE SMOKE CLEARS AND EVERYTHING GOES BACK TO NORMAL, FOR SOME. THERE ARE STILL ALARMING QUESTIONS OUT THERE TO MANY. WHO REALLY SHOT THE POLICE OFFICER? * The Criminal.

I AM REALLY CONFUSED, ** I can tell.

FIRST THEY SAID THAT THE SUSPECT WAS TAZED AND THEN SHOT, **
According to the last report he was. The taser does NOT always immobilize, sometimes both darts do not make contact with the subject’s skin.

WELL IF THAT IS THE FACT, THEN HOW AND WHY WAS HE SHOT IN THE FACE., ASK YOURSELF.
**Street shootings do not follow a “Hollywood script” It’s very dynamic, people move, People run, people duck.

FROM A COUPLE OF WITNESSES, THEY SAID THAT THE SUSPECT WAS ALREADY ON THE GROUND AND THE OFFICER STOOD OVER HIM AND SHOT HIM. ** Quite possible. If he still had a gun in his hand or very near him he would still be shot. Remember, a person lying on the ground can shoot just as accurately as someone standing. Now for the million dollar question… Who are these witnesses? Are they gang-bangers, homies from the hood? Or are they people looking to hire a lawyer? I can’t help but wonder what their motive is. If they have information relevant to this incident, they should call the internal affairs office and report it.

WHY WAS THIS MAN, SHOT MULTIPLE TIMES,** Police are trained to fire and KEEP FIRING until the threat is neutralized. If more than one officer is shooting (as is often the case) it is quite probable 20 or more rounds could be fired usually takes less than three seconds. This is something people just don’t seem to understand.

AND ISN'T IT FUNNY THAT THE OFFICER JUST BY LUCK WAS SHOT IN THE CHEST WHILE WEARING HIS BULLET PROOF VEST. ** Not funny at all. He was also shot in the leg.

WAS THAT A COVER UP OR WAS HE SHOT BY ONE OF HIS FELLOW OFFICERS? ** No cover up. First, a cover-up is too difficult to pull off (too many witnesses both law enforcement and public). Second, Why cover-up? The evidence will speak for itself.

HOW COULD SOMEONE WHO IS RUNNING FROM A OFFICER BE SHOT IN THE FACE. THEY NEVER SAID IT WAS A STAND OFF, FACE TO FACE COMBAT. ** Repeat question, same answer: *Street shootings do not follow the “Hollywood Model” It’s very dynamic, people move, people run, people duck.

TO TOP THAT OFF, THEY SHOWED THE PUBLIC THIS DAMAGED RUSTED WEAPON ON THE NEWS, ** Old rusty firearms can kill you just as dead as a nice shiny one.

NOW FROM ALL THE INFORMATION THAT WE ARE HEARING THAT HE IS A COURT-REGISTERED GANG MEMBER, WHY WOULD THIS GANG MEMBER HAVE THIS OLD BEAT UP GUN, WHEN THEY HAVE SO MUCH ACCESS TO HIGH POWERED WEAPONS. ** No one ever said he was smart. Maybe he couldn’t afford a better firearm. Maybe it was his favorite, maybe it is the only firearm his homies could steal. Who knows?

ISN'T THAT WHY THEY FORMED THE GANG TASK UNIT TO FIND GANG MEMBERS WITH WEAPONS AND DRUGS. Yup, this is a prime example of why there is a gang task force. Seems to be working.

MAYBE IF THEY WOULD HAVE APPROACHED HIM EARLIER THAT DAY, IT WOULD HAVE NOT COME TO THIS. ** Did you ever think that maybe if Mr. Anderson had just complied with the officers instructions and NOT POINTED A GUN AT THE OFFICER it wouldn’t have come to this!

I WOULD HAVE FELT BETTER IF, THE POLICE WOULD HAVE DUG UP A NEWER VERSION OF A WEAPON. ** I’m a bit concerned here YOU would have felt better if the police officer faced a more deadly threat??? WHY??? The police only have the weapon the “bad guy” has on his possession. They would undoubtedly prefer the bad guy only has access to a water pistol but that’s not how it works in real life.

THAT IS SOMETHING THAT THEY PULLED OUT OF THERE EVIDENCE ROOM FROM A PREVIOUS CRIME. ** Nope, weapons used in a previous crime are destroyed in accordance with State law. Just ask anyone who has had one of his firearms stolen, used in a crime and recovered by the police. They actually notify the legal owner it is being destroyed.

I HOPE SOMEONE FROM THE FORENSIC DEPARTMENT , IS NOT BIAS TOWARD ANYONE WHO IS NOT IN LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND TELL THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BULLET THAT WAS PULLED FROM THE OFFICERS VEST. ** Umm, That’s their job and that’s what forensics does: Let the evidence speak for itself.

IT ALL LIES IN THE HANDS OF THE FORENSIC TEAM. ** I agree.

TELL THE TRUTH. ** They do.

MAKE SURE THAT THE SUSPECT IS WIPED DOWN AND TESTED FOR GUN RESIDUE POWER. IF HE FIRED ANY WEAPON WITHIN THE LAST 24 HOURS OF HIS DEATH, IT WILL BE PROVEN. **I agree.

SOMEONE NEEDS TO SPEAK FOR THE DEAD. ** No they don’t. Unfortunately, Mr. Anderson lived a life of continuing crime and was not a productive member of society. Someone needs to speak for the many victims of gang criminals.

I AM NOT AGREEING WITH GANG MEMBERS, ** Sounds like perhaps you are.

BUT THERE IS A WAY TO HANDLE THE PROBLEM. POLICE ARE HERE TO PROTECT AND SERVE NOT TO KILL AND LIE. ** That’s exactly what they do. They protect the innocent public from predator criminals carrying guns in violation of their parole. They only kill when they are forced to.

REMEMEBER POLICE OFFICERS ARE HUMAN BEING TOO, ** Yes, and they bleed when they are shot. Their families cry when they are killed – but nobody in the hood seems to care when a cop is hurt or shot.

AND THEY LIE AND CHEAT TOO. ** Much less than criminals.

THIS PARTICULAR OFFICER HAS BEEN IN A OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING BEFORE, ** That means he has been confronted by an armed and dangerous criminal before. I’m sure if you asked him he would have preferred not to have been placed in the position of taking another human’s life.

HIS FILE NEEDS TO BE REVIEWED ** Police officers records are reviewed on a regular basis – even if they never fire their weapon.

AND FLASHED ACROSS THE TELEVISION.**No, it’s no one’s business.

IN A ARTICLE FROM THE PAPER IT SAID THAT SAW THE SUSPECT EARLIER THAT DAY. WHY WASN'T HE APPROACHED DURING THE DAY. ** You’re repeating yourself. But for the sake of argument, maybe the officers did not observe any illegal behavior earlier. Maybe they were called away to handle another call. Maybe maybe maybe….

I FIGURED THEY WAITED UNTIL NIGHT FALL CAME, DECIDED TO TAKE A RIDE OUT TO THAT AREA AND APPROACH HIM THEN. ** They are much too busy for that. What makes you think Mr. Anderson was so officers would stop what they are doing (responding to calls) and pick on him? Your argument is not rational.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NIGHT AND DAY WHEN YOU ARE JUST DOING YOUR NORMAL ROUTINE PATROL? ** A lot. It’s much more dangerous at night. Criminals use darkness to conceal their activity and when confronted they tend to react more violently.

IF HE IS ON PAROLE, IT ONLY TAKES A CALL TO HIS PAROLE OFFICER TO LET HIM KNOW THAT HE IS AN ACTIVE GANG MEMBER IN A HIGH CRIME AREA, WITHIN 2-3 DAYS HE WOULD HAVE BEEN IN CUSTODY GIVE OR TAKE. ** If the felon is in possession of a firearm, two to three days waiting for the parole officer to take him into custody is two to three days too long. He would need to be arrested immediately. What if he was on his way to kill someone? In a perfect world, Mr. Anderson wouldn’t have been out in the darkness, hanging with gang-bangers, and carrying a dangerous weapon. In a perfect world Mr. Anderson would not have tried to kill a police officer. Sadly, we don’t live in a perfect world.

NOW UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE TO WAIT TO SEE WHAT STORY THE POLICE WILL COME UP WITH IT. ** No, we will need to see the results of a complete investigation and the results of the forensics team.

REMEMBER THERE IS ALWAYS TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY AND NOW WE JUST HAVE ONE. ** Mr. Anderson unfortunately choose his destiny. No one but Mr. Anderson and his God know WHY he decided to try to kill this police officer but the evidence thus far points to Mr. Anderson making a very bad decision and it cost him his life.

Parents don't realize when they critize a child mother/father infront of the child, they pretty much send a message to the child that something is wrong with his/her DNA. They pretty much critize the child DNA!!!
Can you imagine telling a child part of hiS/her DNA has a problem??

Mr. Lynch: Your account of Hart Park is interesting. I frequent the park and enjoy it even in its delapadated state. I believe an earlier story told that your father helped to build the water wheel. You must have an interest to see the park return or surpass its once great state. Please keep me posted regarding any plans for renewal. I would like to be involved. I look forward to reading future historical accounts of the park.

I have had a weight problem the majority of my life and it is not easy being heavy; first of all, society does not accept obese people as being human. Fortunately for me, I am 100 lbs. less than I was, but I still have at least 100 lbs. to go. I don't know if I will ever loose the rest of this weight, but at least I am thinner than I was. Being obese has caused unwanted health problems such as diabetes.

I never played in band or colorguard, but my sister did colorguard at Centennial. Mr. Kelley's bands always fared pretty well at many major competitions and the band and colorguard even was allowed to march in London's Millenium Parade held to usher in the new millenium almost 8 years ago (my sister was a part of that group).

For the comment that Mr. Witbee made:As a member of FACTS(Families To Amend Three Strikes), We take a stand to amend the "3 Strikes Law". We are not condoning anyone that commits a crime, but we are asking that when a crime is commited, they do have to pay for their crime; but the time has to fit the crime. Our prisons are so over populated with non-violent offenders, that are doing "25 years to life". There are so many serious and violent offenders (such as child molesters, rapists or even murderers) that do less time, and are out sooner than the non-violent offenders. Ex. petty theft, drug possession, etc....... Go to our website Facts1.com and you will be able to read all the stories of the inmates that are doing 25 years to life for non violent crimes.

This is from Tom Hawkins: The picture in qestion is either the Brass Rail or Pyrenese Bar in the late 30's but more probably in the early 40"s. My dad is the second gentleman standing at the back of the bar behind the pin ball machine. He worked for Genetral Petroleum, which I believe later became Mobil. He worked on the old Belridge Lease and was foreman of a roustabout gang. If there was an old days parade close by he was in it. As far as being in the bar it was to have a drink, I'm sure it was not to have his photo taken. The latest it could have been was when he moved to East Bakersfield around 1945.

This was e-mailed to me by Angie "Checchi" Brown, the niece of Dick and Rose Fanucchi: It is our families opinion, (and we hope the correct one) that the bar you featured in The Bakersfield Californian submitted by Peter Apanel, Oregon resident was The 808 Club on Baker St in East Bakersfield. The
The 808 Club was owned by our Uncle and Aunt, Dick (Domenico) and Rose Fanucchi. Dick and Rose are in the picture, Rose sitting at the bar and Dick sitting directly behind her. The picture was probably taken during one of the “Western Day” celebrations.
Some of the light fixtures bar equipment and furniture featured in the picture was stored at their ranch in Old River, but was stolen years ago. My brother, Alfonso Checchi still owns a gun given to him by Uncle Dick in the past, once adorned the walls of the 808 Club.

I just talked to Mary Metropolis, who was born in 1917 and will turn 90 on Halloween. She says that when she was 16, she worked for Advanced Beverage and knew many of the local bars. She is not sure which bar is in the photo. But she says the photo is from either 1933 or 1934 when Bakersfield hosted Frontier Days. Her dad, John Demos, owned The Last Chance bar under the Bakersfield Hotel at 19th and M streets. She also remembers the Brass Rail, Johnnie Johnson, Mission, Mint and Suzy's. As for the Frontier Days event, the parade route included 19th Street and Chester Avenue. And the men all grew facial hair lest they be thrown in the "jail" and have to pay to get out. Her father, who is on the far left of the photo below, won first place in the category of "Best beard started on or after Sept. 1, 1934."
I just talked with Marlene Orloff who says her dad is the man in black in the foreground of the photo. She is not sure which bar is pictured, but she is sure it's her father in the photo: Martin Orloff. He was born in 1905 and she puts him at about 35 years old in the photo. She says he was in oil and real estate and spent a lot of time at the El Tejon and Padre hotels for business or drinks. Marlene says she was adopted when her father was older, 47 years old. And he died in 1967. But her family is part of the well-known Orloff family of Taft.

It's not Woolgrowers because they never had a bar. It's not the Padre because the bar at that angle is too big. It looks like Narducci's. He says he believes the photo is from in the Old Southern Hotel at 19th & Chester. He says he used to sneak in there as a boy, and that he went there with his uncles and dad in the 1930s. He said it was a really high class hotel, second to El Tejon.

You can peer through the window today and still see the tile, despite the construction that has been halted. The Padre opened in 1927 . The long room pictured in the photo could either be the large room in the back called “The Frontier Room” or it could have been a part of the large lobby.

At dawn the telephone rings, "Hello, Senor Rod? This is Ernesto, the caretaker at your country house."

"Ah yes, Ernesto. What can I do for you? Is there a problem?"

"Um, I am just calling to advise you, Senor Rod, that your parrot, he is dead."

"My parrot? Dead? The one that won the International competition?"

"Si, Senor, that's the one."

"Damn! That's a pity! I spent a small fortune on that bird. What did he die from?"

"From eating the rotten meat, Senor Rod."

"Rotten meat? Who the hell fed him rotten meat?"

"Nobody, Senor. He ate the meat of the dead horse. "

"Dead horse? What dead horse?"

"The thoroughbred, Senor Rod."

"My prize thoroughbred is dead?"

"Yes Senor Rod, he died from all that work pulling the water cart."

"Are you insane?? What water cart?"

"The one we used to put out the fire, Senor." "Good Lord!! What fire are you talking about, man??"

"The one at your house, Senor! A candle fell and the curtains caught on fire."

"What the hell?? Are you saying that my mansion is destroyed because of a candle??!!"

"Yes, Senor Rod."

"But there's electricity at the house!! What was the candle for?"

"For the funeral, Senor Rod."

"WHAT BLOODY FUNERAL??!!"

"Your wife's, Senor Rod. She showed up ve ry late one night and I thought she was a thief, so I hit her with your new TaylorMade SuperQuad 460 golf club."

SILENCE........... LONG SILENCE..........

Robert Rivera also sent me this:

Are those dogs behind the cash register? Or are they rabbits? Are my eyes and memory deceiving me? . . . They're hunting dogs disguised with rabbit ears!

Rene is the man in the dress suit. He had a great sense of humor, everyone that met him loved him. As the former owner Rene's 903 Club, he was proud of his antique gun collection on the back bar. I once asked him how he could have guns behind the bar, I thought it was illegal. He replied, "it's okay they are antiques". However, the rumor was that he kept one loaded and in working order just for protection. Can you guess which one?

Someone once asked Rene, which gun works? Rene scoffed at the question and then replied with a chuckle, "They all do!"

That is his wife seated next to him. And the young boy may be their son. Baker Street was the center of many celebrations and parades during that era. This one was most likely a celebration of western days . . Old Kern days . . . but obviously something along the lines of the "Old Town Baker" theme.

LIfe was fun . . . life was great . . . life is a celebration . . . Baker Street was in its heyday. The gaiety of the tapestries behind the bar depict life's celebration. Rene's 903 Club was a bar for the working man, as portrayed by the two men in the foreground of the picture. But during the evening the bar would be full with people dressed in white shirts, ties and suits. It was a time of prosperity, it was a time for celebration . . . this was clearly the "good times" on Baker Street.

My dad and Rene were competitor's in the bar business . . . but they were also good friends. A little friendly competition was good for business. And so it was on Baker Street. I had the honor of befriending Rene when I was a 5 year old child. He treated me like a son. But alas our friendship was short lived. I was saddened one day when his widow told me that he had died suddenly . . . we hugged each other and agreed that everyone loved Rene. . . and the celebration of life continued.

Rene, "Are those dogs or rabbits behind the bar?"

Robert Rivera e-mailed me this response:

This bar looks very familiar to me. I recognize the tapestries on the wall and the dogs behind the cash register. The ceiling fans and the black and white diamond floor pattern are typical of the era. My Dad, John Rivera Sr. owned the 905 Club on Baker Street in East Bakersfield from the 1940's up until his death 6 years ago. He knew all the bar owners on the Eastside. He would often frequent other bars in the area to discuss business with the bartenders and owners. As a young child (1953-1955), my father would take me with him on short business errands.

Here is my best guess. My dad had those very tapestries and ceiling fans stored in the upstairs storeroom located at 905 Baker St. for the longest time. I do not think they are from the 905 Club bar, I believe they came from another bar. Sometime during the late 50's or early 60's he purchased the bar next door located at 903 Baker St. I think it was called Rene's. That is where I remember the dogs behind the register.

If you have time, go to the northeast corner of Baker and Jackson. Checkout the tile work underneath the entry way of 901 Baker St. (my dad purchased that building around the same time as Rene's). It has similar black and white tile work; and says "Globe", for Globe Pharmacy. I think the tile work is still there. It was once owned by a prominent pharmacists here in Bakersfield, I think he owned the pharmacy on the corner of Chester.

I am nearly certain the bar is Rene's 903 Baker . I don't know the name of the prior owners. I would not be suprised if the man in the dress suit and the woman seated behind the young boy are the owners (but that is a guess).

My dad and his brother Don purchased the 905 Club during the 1940's from a Mr. Frankel. I believe he was the father of our former Coroner, Helen Frankel.

There is definitely some interesting history on that corner of Baker and Jackson.

I hope this may be of some help.

Gloria (Barsotti) Cory e-mailed me this: "How surprised to see the picture of the bar in Saturday's paper.

It really brought back memories from my childhood. I am almost sure that the bar is The Brass Rail that was located on the SW corner of 20th and Eye streets. My grandfather Wally Linn spent many an afternoon or evening there. I would stop by on my way home from school and peek in through the double doors to see if he was on his usual stool. Sometimes he would call me in, and the bartender would give me a cherry with a stem, what a treat. I especially remember the long bar and the tile floor pattern. I have thought about that wonderful place with the smell of alcohol, and felt so daring to peek in to a place where only adults could go.

Thank Mr. Apanel for bring to life a wonderful childhood experience."

"I believe this picture is of the inside of the now burnt down Granite Station stop. The wood work on the back of the bar and the flooring made me think of the place immediately."
