CSU Bakersfield set for 41st commencement

June 2, 2011 - California State University, Bakersfield will celebrate its 41st commencement next week with nearly 2,000 members of the class of 2011 being recognized during three ceremonies. A graduate and hooding ceremony for graduate students in all schools will be held Tuesday, June 7, at 6 p.m. in the Icardo Center.

For undergraduates, two ceremonies will be held: one for the schools of Arts and Humanities, Natural Sciences and Mathematics and Business and Public Administration, on Friday, June 10 and another for the School of Social Sciences and Education on Saturday, June 11.

Of the 1,544 students eligible to participate in the spring undergraduate ceremonies, 290 are from the School of Business and Public Administration, 251 are from the School of Arts and Humanities, 765 are from the School of Social Sciences and Education, and 238 are from the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. A total of 410 graduate students are eligible to participate in the graduate and hooding ceremony.

The commencement ceremonies are as follows:

Tuesday, June 7:

Graduate students from all schools will have a graduate and hooding ceremony at 6:00 p.m. in the Icardo Center. The hooding ceremony is for master’s degree candidates during which a faculty member places the hood over the head of the graduate, signifying his or her success in completing the graduate program.

Commencement speaker: CSUB President Horace Mitchell

Dr. Mitchell became the fourth president of CSUB in July 2004 after 36 years of experience in higher education. Under Mitchell’s leadership, the university has continued a period of rapid development, with a vision to extend the excellence and diversity of the faculty and academic programs, enhance the quality of the student experience and strengthen community engagement.

Friday, June 10:

The Schools of Arts and Humanities, Business and Public Administration, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics will hold their ceremony at 7:00 a.m. at the CSUB Amphitheatre.

Commencement speaker: Dr. Ralph Lewin, President and CEO of California Council for the Humanities

Ralph Lewin serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the California Council for the Humanities, an organization devoted to connecting Californians to the power of ideas.

He is also a three time recipient of the international “Idea Prize” from the Koerber Foundation of Germany for his work to foster understanding among people through cultural programming. Mr. Lewin earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and another in Germanic Literature and Languages from the University of California, Santa Barbara. He also studied for a year at Georg August University in Goettingen, Germany and a semester at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. He received a master’s degree from San Francisco State University in International Relations and was a guest scholar at the Institute for International Relations in Potsdam, Germany. Following his studies, Mr. Lewin lectured for a semester at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina.

The School of Social Sciences and Education will hold its ceremony at 7:00 a.m. in the CSUB Amphitheatre.

Commencement speaker: Dr. Wendy Wayne, Consultant with San Joaquin Hospital

Wendy Wayne has had many careers including a teacher in the Peace Corps, a health educator, nurse practitioner and administrator of early childhood education programs. Wendy holds a BS in Zoology from UCLA, a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from California State University, Bakersfield, a Master’s in Public Health, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership. In the last few years, Wendy has traveled to India, Nicaragua, Nigeria, and the Sudan to do volunteer work. Most recently she has enjoyed working with the Kern Medical Reserve Corps. She is currently a consultant to San Joaquin Community Hospital. Wendy is married to Gene Tackett, has two sons, two daughters-in-law and three grandchildren.

Dealing with unruly students. Strong words from the past.

This excerpt was taken from the comments made by Celsus Brower, secretary of the Board of Education of the Bakersfield School District, in the district's annual report dated July 1, 1898 and published in the Bakersfield Californian on July 22, 1898. This portion of the report had to do with dealing with unruly students.

"A suitable corp of teachers having been secured, they should receive the earnest support and co-operation of the directors, in order that the authority and discipline so essential to a successful training of pupils may be at all times maintained. While such cases are becoming noticeably less frequent, it is a painful fact that a few cases of insubordination and more serious offenses have occurred during the term, causing teachers and this board alike, serious concern between the desire to do all that may be possible to reform and benefit the individual on the one hand, and to protect the great body of pupils from contamination and corruption on the other. It is a question whether at times the "quality of mercy" has not inclined unduly toward the individual at the cost of injustice toward the many and whether greater stringency should not prevail in dealing with such cases in the future. While our schools are places of mental and moral training, they should by no means be regarded as reformatories for the unruly, the vicious and the depraved. When, through the indifference of parents or their inability properly to control their offspring, their children may become unfit associates for the well behaved, the State institutions or other places of severity of discipline are the proper places for the offenders and not the public schools of the country."

Local high school student recipient of national scholarship

Bakersfield – The National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, Southern California & Nevada Chapter, is giving more than $1 million in scholarships to students around the country this year. More than 800 applications were submitted nationwide, and one local high school student, Liberty High School’s Cameron Califf, was chosen to receive one of the awards. Califf was honored during a ceremony at Liberty High held on World MS Day, May 25.

Califf, who is graduating this year with a 4.5 GPA, will be receiving $1,000 from the Society and plans to attend the University of Southern California where he will major in Mechanical Engineering. He said he chose USC because of its reputation and because of everything the school has to offer. “USC has everything a college would want—a successful football team, strong academics, and the fact that it is located in the heart of L.A., so there will always be something to do,” he explained.

Besides receiving the scholarship last Wednesday, Califf was also recognized for being at the top of his class (and earning the highest GPA possible in the Kern High School District). He was also involved with the school newspaper, The Revolution, and was on the “We the People” constitutional debate team, which went to state in February. But his achievements go beyond past the classroom; he has also been instrumental in raising multiple sclerosis awareness in Kern County.

In 2009, Califf was chosen as “Youth Volunteer of the Year” for the entire Southern California & Nevada Chapter, which serves 20,000 living with MS. He was honored for two projects he completed for the National MS Society as he was trying to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout – the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts. He designed and created 10 signs that have been (and will continue to be) used during Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week in Bakersfield. Califf also designed and constructed a “Wall of Honorees” so the Bakersfield office can publicly recognize those who have made generous donations, those who are top fundraisers, and those local volunteers who have received honors from the Chapter. Because of his accomplishments, he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout at a ceremony on May 29.

Califf chose to do his Eagle Scout project for the Society because of his mother, who was diagnosed in 1997. “She became involved with the MS Society in 2002 and because of her close connections, I have also had the privilege of working with them,” he said. “I am just glad that I could help out and help try to find a cure for MS.”

Every year, the National MS Society awards scholarships to high school students with a connection with MS. Last year, Paige Brock, a Frontier High School student living with MS, along with Bakersfield Christian High School’s Siobhan O’Rourke, the daughter of a Bakersfield woman who has MS, received the scholarships.

JONESTOWN MASSACRE REVISITED

False prophets come and go. Some leave behind a trail of disappointment and others leave behind a trail of death so horrific that it needs to be told and retold and remembered.

I remember the Jonestown Massacre like it was yesterday though it happened in the early 70’s. Many have been born since that tragedy having no idea who Jim Jones was but they should -and those of us who saw it should never forget lest we put our faith where it doesn’t belong and be led along to disappointment -or worse.

We have recently heard a false prophet foretell that the world was coming to an end on May 21^st and thankfully, it did not. He has now pushed the date up to October 11^th, I believe. As stated in my last article, he could not know the date as the Bible clearly states no man knows the day or the hour. What’s more, The Bible clearly states this earth is never going to be destroyed. It is the system of things that God is going to rid the earth of. And according to another prophecy, which has many believers, the Mayan Calendar foretells a destruction in 2012.

So it would be good to revisit the Jonestown Massacre for it does show the consequences of rejecting the word of God (thereby, rejecting God himself) and looking to imperfect men for the solution to the world’s problems. God does have a timetable to undo all the bad that has been done and while we don’t know the day we know that according to the global signs of violence and natural disasters in a morally bankrupt world that is exploding on an unprecedented scale, we are certainly in the ‘last days.’-2nd Timothy Chapter 3 verses 1-5.

Jonestown Massacre – A Modern Day Horror Story.

-The Bible’s View-

Jim Jones, or Reverend’ Jones as he called himself, claimed to be a teacher of God’s Word. He claimed to represent the Bible and its Author. Therefore, all that he taught should have been in harmony with it. God does not expect blind faith from us but a faith that is based on accurate knowledge. He knew there would be false prophets who would mislead and exploit many so he has given us protective advice. -1^st John 4 verse 1 says, “Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world.” Then let’s do that. Let’s test some of Jones’ ‘expressions’ and pit them against God’s word.

Jones insisted on being called Father, as in heavenly Father. The Bible clearly states, “..You must call no one on earth your Father since you have only one Father, and he is in heaven.”

--Matthew 23 verse 9.

Jones would ‘heal’ his parishioners by pretending to draw forth cancers that were actually bloody chicken gizzards. He was both a fraud and a liar. Psalms 5 verse 6 strongly says, “You hate all evil men, liars you destroy; murderers and frauds Yahweh detests.”

Jones demanded all his followers’ earnings be turned over to him which in the end amounted to about fifteen million dollars. Yet God admonishes his ministers, “You received free, give free.”

–Matthew 10 verse 8.

Jones reportedly had sexual relations with both men and women and he himself was married. This, a man of God? An adulterer? A fornicator...and more? –1^st Corinthians 6 verses 9 and 10 states, “What, do you not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s Kingdom?

Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, or idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes...” Jones fulfilled every disapproved thing mentioned in that verse.

He controlled his followers with brutal beatings and children were tortured and frightened into submission. Was he imitating the God he claimed to represent? How unlike God he was! “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, a gentle Father and the God of all consolation, who comforts us in all our sorrows...” -2^nd Corinthians 1 verse 3.

It is true that many of Jones’ followers were illiterate and therefore it would have been difficult to test this man’s expressions according to the written Word –but did they need Bible knowledge to know that putting children in a darkened room and shocking them by attached electrodes –or repeatedly lowering them into a deep well until they screamed for mercy was morally wrong? We do have a God-given conscience that supersedes all knowledge (remember the Nuremberg Trials?)

Jones had the parents and nurses drugged with sedatives and pain killers in order to enable them to squirt potassium chloride and cyanide down into the throats of little babies. Where did he get the authority for that? “You shall not murder.” -Exodus 20 verse 1.

The rest of the people were either forced or willingly drank this deadly potion. The results? Nine hundred and thirteen dead, including Jones.

God has been gracious to warn us against such false prophets. If believers would follow the example of the circumspect, Borean Jews, then another Jonestown tragedy could not get off the ground. Regarding these Jews, the Bible says at Acts 17 verse 11, “Now the latter were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the Word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the scriptures daily as to whether these things were so.” Is that not life-saving counsel?

Meet Popeye! Having only one eye doesn't stop this friendly boy!

This is Popeye and he is a 6 month old dachshund mix. He weighs 11 pounds and he only has one eye. He came to the shelter with a missing eye and he could have been born with out it or it could have been an old injury. It doesn’t stop him from playing and running around the yard. He likes to be with people and he likes toys. He does well with other dogs and cats. He likes to explore and be outside. He doesn’t know how to walk on a leash yet but he is learning. He likes to be carried and he will come to you when called. He is a submissive boy and will lay on his back for a belly rub. Popeye would love a second chance with a new family. 63rd Annual Glennville Rodeo

Greenhorn Mountain Veterans Association presents the 63^rd Annual Glennville Rodeo Round-Up. A PRCA All-American Rodeo

Glennville, May 25, 2011: The 63rd Annual Glennville Rodeo will be held on June 12th, 2011; the gates open at 11:30 am and the Rodeo begins at 1:30 pm. Join us this year in supporting Small Miracles Foundation, a non-profit Kern County foundation that provides financial, physical and emotional support for families dealing with childhood cancers.

The Glennville Rodeo is just one day of an action packed three day weekend that begins on Thursday, June 9^th at 12 noon. Our campground will open for campers and trailers on a first-come, first serve, limited basis. Our GMVA Glennville Rodeo Queen Contest begins at 2 PM with the horsemanship competition. On Friday, June 10^th, the Small Miracles Roping produced by Thunderhead Ranch begins at 9 AM. Friday afternoon, we host the Small Miracles Barrel Race, produced by West Coast Barrel Racing. Practice runs begins at 4 PM, race begins at 7 PM. On Saturday, June 11^th, the GMVA Jackpot Roping begins at 9 AM and the Lauren P. Small Memorial Barrel race will begin at 4 PM, with practice runs, and the $2000 added money Barrel Race begins at 7 PM.

Sunday, June 12^th the PRCA rodeo celebration begins with Cowboy Church at 8:30 am, Rodeo Parade at 11 am and then the gates will open at 11:30 am and rodeo fans will find food, drinks and fun for the whole family. Feast on BBQ hamburgers, hot dogs and salads inside the arena. Outside the arena, we will have a full BBQ deep pit meal in our beautiful park area. PRCA Cowboys and Cowgirls will be on hand to sign autographs and talk to rodeo fans in the park area before the rodeo. Bring your camera for a picture with your favorite PRCA Contestant! Proceeds benefit the Greenhorn Mountain Veterans Association. We will also have a large variety of vendors on the grounds; so come early and shop! Our Grand Entry will begin at 1 PM with a special salute to our veterans and a moving patriotic presentation. Our Queen Coronation will be at 1:20 and then it's Rodeo Time!

The 2011 GLENNVILLE RODEO ROUND is reaching out to our Kern County Veterans by hosting a food drive at the rodeo. Bring any number of non-perishable food items to the Rodeo to help our Kern County Veterans in need. Rodeo fans can help fill the food pantry at the Kern County Veterans Service Department. All food collected at the gate will be taken directly to the Kern County Veterans Services Department in Bakersfield.

Oh Castings!

Today I worked in my flowerbeds. I truly love working in the yard. But I hate crawly things so the combination is a problem! I wear gloves. I have a can of bug spray “at the ready” and a cell phone attached to my hip in case a black widow attacks me and death is imminent.

Digging among the spent pansies, looking for a place to plant a pink petunia, I uncovered an earthworm the size of a small garden snake. Snakes and I are not friends. No matter how big or how little, I do not like them! Then I remembered friends I had in Texas who raised earthworms and told me that their “castings” (that’s a nice word for a popular swear word) are good for the soil (next time you are tempted to say the “s” word say, “Oh castings!” ) Sooooo, I TALKED to the earthworm. That’s one critter I don’t think Dr. Doolittle talked to.

The earthworm stared up at me (they DO have eyes; you just have to look very closely). We had a conversation. It went something like this.

Earthworm: “Please do not cut me in half with that spade you are holding.”

Me: “OK. Just please do a lot of ‘casting’ so I will have healthy soil.”

Earthworm: “I can only cast so much. It depends on what I’ve had to eat today.”

Me: “OK. If you like dirt, you’ve had a lot of it.”

Earthworm: “Of course I like dirt. That’s why I live here.”

Me: “OK. You’re on. Cast away. Give me great soil and beautiful petunias.”

It is important that you know that right after this conversation, the earthworm and I parted company. The longer we talked the more it resembled a snake. I took off my gloves, prayed for life for the one little petunia I had planted and moved on to trimming shrubbery. When the hedge trimmer and I hang out together, all critters this side of the Mississippi run for cover! Earthworms dig deeper and eat more dirt. This could be a good thing! Obviously, the more they eat the more they cast and the more they cast the better for my petunias. Don’t kid yourself. There is a definite science to my gardening.

When Selling Your Business, Plan Your Exit Strategy Wisely

It’s been a long, hard road. You’ve worked hard the last 30 years to build your business up to where it is today. You’ve struggled, you’ve sacrificed and, best of all, you’ve succeeded. Your business has finally reached the point where you can consider it an “asset”. And now it’s time to call it quits. You are ready to retire and begin enjoying the fruits of your labor. But wait. Who is right there with his hand out in front of you? It’s Uncle Sam and he wants his piece of the pie!

If you decide to sell your business in order to retire and are hoping to live off the proceeds from that sale, you are not going to be too excited about having to write a nice fat check to the IRS for a quarter or potentially a third or more of your precious nest egg, are you? Of course not. That’s why, when it comes time for you to part with your most valuable “asset”, you owe it to yourself to consider all of your options.

Let’s say you sell your business for $1 million and your cost basis is $500,000, you’d have a capital gain of $500,000. So you just pay your 15 percent tax on the long term capital gain and you’re free and clear, right? Wrong. You forgot about that nifty little thing the IRS refers to as Depreciation Recapture. There could be an additional 25 percent tax on that too. Thankfully though, the IRS’s own rules have made it possible for you to control, at least partially, how and when you will pay your taxes, and possibly depreciation recapture, on the sale of that business.

Here are some of your options:

Sell the business and pay capital gains and depreciation recapture taxes in cash.

In other words, Donate your money to the IRS. Hmmm. Does this ever sound like a good idea? Next…

Do a 1031 Exchange into another like-kind business or property.

OK, if you do a 1031 Exchange, it’s kind of like “trading-in” your business for another business or property, which will effectively defer or postpone the tax liability on the sale. However, if your goal is to actually Retire, then you probably aren’t going to want to continue to run another business or manage another property, so this particular solution is probably out of the question.

Sell your business or property using an Installment Sale.

Selling your business to someone, with the promise that they are going to pay you for it over time, presents some obvious risks. An Installment Sale allows you to spread the taxes over time by reporting a portion of the gains every year as you receive the installment payments. However, the buyer could default on the payments, forcing you to take it back and making you go back into a business you already sold to retire. And, what if the buyer had done a poor job or the economy tanked and the business subsequently failed, leaving you with nothing? Risky business for sure.

Sell your business or property using a Structured Sale.

A Structured Sale basically locks you into an annuity, usually guaranteed by a major Insurance Company. Trusting your nest egg to an Insurance Company to handle the payout of your money to you could be a much safer choice rather than an individual, as with an Installment Sale. This can provide you the security of a fixed income stream and Taxes may be spread out over the term of the annuity. A word of caution, once you set up a Structured Sale annuity, it cannot be undone and you will be stuck with the same payment stream for life, even if inflation goes up or your needs change. This means that if you need extra money, you’re probably out of luck.

Set up a Deferred Sales Trust™, then sell.

The Deferred Sales Trust™, or DST, was created in 2002 and is one of the best options to defer taxes on the sale of appreciated assets. The owner first sells the business to the Trust. The Trust then sells the business to an outside buyer and the Trust uses the money from the sale to make Installment payments back to the seller of the business. You determine the fixed-income payment stream, which can defer and spread out capital gains and normal (straight-line) depreciation recapture taxes over many years. If you pass away before receiving all payments due, the rest is paid to your beneficiaries. The DST can also be used in combination with other strategies which could help you net more from the sale. One caveat though, this strategy must be in place before any Buy/Sell agreement is signed, because the sale must be between the trust and the buyer.

Set up a Charitable Remainder Trust and donate the business to a Charity.

A Charitable Remainder Trust can help you Eliminate taxes completely without having to live behind bars! You even get a tax deduction for the value you leave to Charity, that’s nice. A CRT allows the Charity to sell the business without any recognition of gains (tax-free). You, then, get to receive an income stream for a certain number of years or your lifetime, and then whatever is left (the Remainder) will go to the Charity. Feels good, yes. But how will your heirs feel about you giving away their inheritance?

No matter which strategy you choose, always talk to a tax professional or attorney regarding your specific situation before making any decisions. Retirement is a big step, and an exciting one. Make sure you are well informed about your options. It can make a world of difference for you in retirement.

Don't be afraid of May 21st!

If you wanted to be educated in math, would you buy a song book? If in science, would you buy a cookbook? Hardly. On the matter of the end of the 'world', one needs to go to the Bible for information and not give their own opinions or misguided calculations. They can most certainly do this but don't say your information is gleaned from the Bible.

The Bible clearly says, and Jesus clearly said, that no man knows the day or hour when this judgment day is to take place. Matthew 24 vs 36. He also states at Luke 21 vss 34-36 for us to 'keep awake' because that 'day' will come 'suddenly' upon us. Revelation 3 vs 3 again shows we do not know the day or hour and so we are urged to keep awake! by living our lives according to God's will (not our own) so then when that day comes we will be ready.

This theme is stated throughout God's word in the old and new testament.

The other matter is what is coming to an end? Again, opinions not based on God's word, are saying that the end of the world is coming. It is not. God clearly informs us that the 'system' of things is coming to an end, all those things which have gone against God, ruined this earth, covered the earth in violence and blood and most important, stealing God's identity and taking his name out of most Bibles and stating he is someone he is not. It primarily has to do with the sovereignty of God that began in the Garden of Eden and the disrespect of and rejection of his word.

Proof: The earth will never be destroyed. Psalms 37 vss 10, 11, 29. Jesus himself showed it will not be destroyed at Matthew 5 vs 5 as approved ones will inherit the earth. Jesus is not going to promise inheritance of the earth if it is going to be destroyed. So if one states otherwise they are calling both God and his Son a liar.

God's original purpose was to have this earth in a paradise condition with life on it forever. Genesis 1 vss 26-30 ; 2: 7-9,15.

Although that did not happen due to what occurred in the Eden, God has made the way out as his purpose can never be thwarted. Isaiah 55 vss 8-11.

I would like to add that as to Jesus' coming?... The Greek word in Matthew 24 vs 3 for 'coming' as many Bibles use that term is 'parousi'as which literally means 'presence'. One can be present and not seen.

When His disciples asked him what would be the sign of his 'presence' and also the conclusion of the system you note that he never said, 'you will see me here ...or I will be seen there...he said when we see all the following things occur (vss 3-14) then we know he is ''present'. I cannot go into all that here but it meant that he was crowned king in Heaven in 1914, that date can be proven from scripture. He is our Messianic King who will soon affect this earth in an awesome way and already has in many ways.

Jesus clearly said that after he had returned to heaven the world would see him no more. John 14 v 3 19.

It was those signs that proved his presence and that presence had to do with his being crowned as king in heaven by his Father. He said that when we see all those signs happening then we know we are near the end (but no actual date is given) Matthew 24 vss 32, 33, 36.

I could not keep silent on this matter for some really believe otherwise to the point of selling their homes and quitting their jobs and this is going to throw them into a financial and emotional hardship when the 'end' doesn't come today.
