KMC & UCLA’s School of Medicine partner with CSUB and area schools to host Medical Career Conference

Hundreds of local high school and college students are slated to attend an all-day Medical Careers Conference at CSU Bakersfield on Friday, April 13. Presented by Kern Medical Center and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, in partnership with CSUB, area high schools and community colleges, the conference offers students interested in health fields the opportunity to meet local health care professionals and learn about the opportunities through a variety of panels, presentations, and workshops.

“The idea is to get young people excited about health care early on as they start to think about what career path they would like to pursue,” said Eric vanSonnenberg, MD, Chief Academic Officer at Kern Medical Center. “The conference will give students access to learn about the many medical and health career pathways that are available.”

The morning session caters to high schools students, when they will hear from KMC and UCLA professionals about groundbreaking news in the world of medicine, in addition to success stories from Kern County residents who have gone on to successful medical careers. Doctors and medical professionals from fields such as nursing, dentistry, psychology, pharmacology, and physical therapy will present lectures and panels about health-related careers. The afternoon session provides similar content targeted to college students.

At noon, the Kern Medical Center/UCLA Medical Forum will help educate high school and college administrators, principals, and counselors on guiding budding medical and health students to opportunities at UCLA and other UC schools. A goal of the conference is to pipeline Kern County students to medical and health careers and to have them eventually return to practice at KMC and in Kern County.

During lunchtime break-out sessions, high school students can mingle through booths from UCLA and CSUB’s School of Natural Science, Mathematics, and Engineering to learn about CSUB’s nursing and pre-med programs. A number of CSUB’s student health and science clubs will also be on hand so prospective students can have peer-to-peer interaction.

The KMC Department of Radiology will be performing real-life ultrasounds for students to observe.

RISK & SAFETY MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

In recognition of World Autism Awareness Day, the Autism Society Chapter-Kern Autism Network presents the “Risk & Safety Management Workshop” on Saturday, April 14, 2012, at University Square, 2000 “K” Street, Conference Room 101, Bakersfield. There will be two free presentations.

The morning workshop is specifically for families and is designed to address safety issues for parents of autistic children. The presentation begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 11:30 a.m.

The afternoon workshop is exclusively for law enforcement and emergency medical personnel. This training will teach how to recognize signs of autism, to deescalate situations, and to know where to look if an autistic child wanders away. The presentation begins at 1:00 p.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m.

Our speaker is Officer Brian Herritt of San Diego, a police officer with over ten years experience in the state of California. His son, Brian, is non-verbal and on the Autism Spectrum.

CSUB-Chevron partnership offers free science courses to high school students

Application deadline for Fall 2012 cohort is March 23

Officials from CSU Bakersfield, Chevron and the Kern County High School District today announced the CSUB-Chevron High School Academy, a new program that will give Kern High School District students the opportunity to take free college-level courses in science, math and engineering at CSUB. The academy was made possible by a $200,000 grant from Chevron.

Through the new academy, high school students will be able to take free evening or early morning classes at CSUB to earn up to 15 transferable units. The one-year, three-quarter sequences will provide the foundation for a major in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, geology, mathematics or physics. An estimated 200 high school students will benefit from the program, which begins Fall 2012.

“Chevron is an essential partner in preparing local students to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics – also referred to as STEM,” said Dr. Kamel Haddad, Associate Dean of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering at CSUB and coordinator of the program. “Through this new academy, qualifying high school students will be able to complete the beginning sequence of their subject of choice and be ahead of the game when they start their freshman year at CSUB or elsewhere.”

Chevron, whose San Joaquin Valley headquarters are located next door to the CSUB campus, has a vested interested in supporting the training of a future local workforce.

“It's critical for companies like Chevron to have a steady pipeline of young engineers and scientists in the places where we do business so we are continually expanding ways to stimulate that interest,” said Bruce Johnson, Vice President of San Joaquin Valley Chevron North America Exploration and Production Company.

To qualify, students must meet prerequisites such as completion of the last or second-to-last high school class in the subject. In some cases, a placement test will also determine readiness.

“The Talking Stick” brings African folktales to life for children March 17-18

Audiences of all ages will learn what it means to be a true friend in CSUB’s upcoming production of “The Talking Stick,” an original play by theater faculty member Kamala Kruszka that brings African folktales to life through drumming, dancing and puppetry. The play opens to the public with five performances on March 17 and 18 inside the Arena Theatre (adjacent to the Doré Theatre) at California State University, Bakersfield, 9001 Stockdale Highway. Admission is just $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. The play is recommended for ages 3 and up.

“Through our productions for young audiences, I hope that local families see theatre as a viable entertainment option for not only their children but for themselves as well,” said Kruszka. “I look for plays that don’t rely only on dialog to tell the story – that require movement and action as well. I also try to find plays that children can relate to and that present them with important themes.”

“The Talking Stick” explores the themes of trust, honesty, humility and forgiveness in four traditional African tales. A cast of seven student actors utilize giant puppets to portray animals such as a lion, elephant, tortoise, monkey and hippopotamus. They also engage the audience with music and movement in the forms of African drumming and dance. The actors use the “talking stick” to guide them through each story they tell.

“The title refers to a stick found in African cultures used by storytellers,” Kruszka said. “According to my research, users believe that the talking stick has a spirit inside that brings power to the storyteller and helps the person speak the truth. Similar to Native American talking sticks, when the holder speaks, all others must listen out of respect.”

In addition to the March performances, CSUB students will take the show on a tour to local schools and day care centers during spring quarter in April and May. CSUB’s High Speed Rail Speaker Series to culminate with town hall meeting

Congressman Kevin McCarthy and Chairman of the California High Speed Rail Authority Dan Richard to lead the discussion

For the past seven weeks, CSUB has hosted a free speaker series for the community centered on the hotly debated topic of the California High Speed Rail project. The series, which has offered students and community members a chance to hear multiple viewpoints, learn facts, and dispel rumors, will culminate with a town hall-style meeting Thursday, March 15 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at CSUB’s Icardo Center. The meeting is free and open to the public.

The discussion will be led by Congressman Kevin McCarthy and Chairman of the California High Speed Rail Authority Dan Richard, who will share their perspectives regarding the project’s business plan, financing, environmental impact, and potential benefits and consequences.

“It is important to note that the town hall meeting is not a debate. We don’t see a debate as a productive forum for this topic. Rather, it is a discussion which will present information and perspectives regarding the high speed rail from high level officials on both sides,” said Evelyn Young, executive assistant to the president of CSUB. “We will take questions from the audience on site as well as via Facebook and Twitter.”

Young added: “The speaker series has been very well received by the community, with each of the five sessions at near capacity and the discussions very rich and robust. The speakers have been knowledgeable and the information provided has been enlightening for all. The town hall meeting is sure to be equally informative and engaging.”

CSUB presents springtime health program, St. Patrick’s Day 5K

The School of Social Sciences and Education at California State University, Bakersfield is taking a proactive role in enhancing the quality of life for Kern County residents by presenting a healthy living series and 5K run this spring.

The program includes a two-part lecture series on “Active Living for Health,” taught by the school’s dean, Dr. Kathleen Knutzen, as well as a St. Patrick’s Day 5K for people of all ages.

“Physical activity is essential for overall health,” Knutzen said. “In our society, transportation, environment and lifestyle can present barriers to physical activity. My lectures will focus on how we can incorporate activity into our daily living, to regulate our metabolism, control or prevent diabetes, and increase overall quality of life.”

Knutzen has extensive experience in promoting wellness activities in communities and on university campuses. She is a past director of a community-based strength program for older adults, past coordinator of a faculty-led community health center, and has experience establishing an employee wellness program. She joined the administration at CSUB in Fall 2010 and has a keen interest in working with the Kern County community on quality of life issues.

Her presentations will take place in the Bakersfield City Council Chambers, 1501 Truxtun Ave. They are free of charge and open to the public.

CSUB Guitar Arts Series presents guitar-vocal duo

The CSUB Guitar Arts Series is presenting guitarist Steven Walter and mezzo-soprano Kristen Walter at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 2 in the CSUB Music Building, Room 127. The event features a dynamic program including music by Domenico Scarlatti, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and J.S. Bach as well as new music for the guitar composed by talented student composers in the music program at CSUB. Tickets are $12 for general admission, $8 for seniors 60 and older, and $6 for youth and students with ID. Tickets can be purchased at the door, or reserved by calling 661-654-2511. The evening will start with a handful of premier performances of music by CSUB student composers Jason Anthony Gomez, Peter Crawford and Fernando Montoya. The students were selected to participate in the Modern Guitar Composition Project - a grant-funded project for which the students were coached on composing for the guitar by CSUB music faculty members Jim Scully and Roger Allen Cope. The pieces are the final, published documents of their hard work and will also be presented at the American Guitar Society monthly meeting in April in Valley Glen, Calif.

Husband and wife team, Steven and Kristen Walter, will cover the rest of the program with a rich variety of music from some of the most wondrous composers in the history of Western art music. Steven Walter is one of a few individuals in the world to be widely known as both a classical guitar builder and performing artist. Among honors as a performer, Walter has been a major prizewinner in the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America International Solo Competition, and was invited to be a guest soloist for the inaugural concert of the San Pedro Sula Filarmónica in Honduras. In the U.S. he often performs concerts with his wife, mezzo-soprano Kristen Walter, and continues to perform solo recitals and as an orchestral soloist. Classical Voice North Carolina has described Walter’s playing as “…performance with cool intellect and a virtuoso technique ... a sound so appealing you have no idea how hard it is to create.”

Kristen Walter studied voice and conducting at Florida State University under the direction of Andre Thomas, Rodney Eichenberger, Larry Gerber and Judy Bowers, earning both an undergraduate degree and a master’s degree in Choral Music Education. She has also been a featured vocal soloist throughout the Carolinas and Florida, performing with the Asheville Lyric Opera, Carolina Concert Choir, the Hendersonville Symphony, and the Brevard Music Center.

CSUB hosts talk on careers in federal law enforcement

The public is invited to learn what it takes to enter federal law enforcement at a talk by Carl Beckett of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration at 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Walter Stiern Library at California State University, Bakersfield.

Beckett’s lecture is part of a speaker series aimed at educating both the campus and the community about opportunities available through CSUB’s degree program in Global Intelligence and National Security. The program is designed to prepare graduates to apply for entry-level positions with federal agencies such as the CIA, FBI, Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security, whose missions focus on intelligence gathering and analysis, threat evaluation, national security, and foreign affairs.

“This program offers a unique opportunity for students to prepare for either a post-graduate career in academia as a scholar or analyst, or to apply for entry-level positions in local or federal law enforcement or as first responders,” said Dr. Mark Martinez, political science professor at CSUB.

Beckett's professional career includes five years with the United States Probation & Parole Office and the past 14 years with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). He spent six years in South America as the DEA's Special Agent in Charge of Specialized Units in Colombia. For the past two years Beckett has been the DEA's Resident Agent in Charge in Bakersfield.

Past speakers in the series have included retired CIA Intelligence Analyst Dr. Roger George, former National Security Advisor for Latin America Dr. Robert A. Pastor, and former Assistant Secretary of Defense Dr. Lawrence J. Korb. CSUB to host open house for prospective science and engineering students

The School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering at California State University, Bakersfield is hosting an open house for local high school seniors. The open house will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 9, in the CSUB Student Union Multipurpose Room, 9001 Stockdale Highway. The event is free and open to the public with free parking in Lot K.

The annual event is intended for high school seniors who are interested in a degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Represented programs include biology, biochemistry, computer sciences, computer engineering, geology, mathematics, nursing, physics, pre-medical, and pre-engineering.

High school seniors and their families are invited to listen to faculty discuss the available programs, tour CSUB’s state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories, and enjoy a dessert reception while interacting with CSUB staff, faculty and students. Students are encouraged to bring a high school transcript (unofficial is ok) so that they can apply for admission to CSUB and have their transcripts evaluated for admission that night.

CSUB ethics panel to focus on mortgage crisis

With one of the highest mortgage default rates in the country, Kern County is an epicenter of the national mortgage crisis. The effect reaches every segment of Kern County’s population – homeowners, lenders, business owners and taxpayers. To address the ethically-related impacts of the mortgage crisis, the Kegley Institute of Ethics at California State University, Bakersfield is hosting a panel discussion titled "Ethics, Justice and the Mortgage Crisis" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the CSUB Student Union Multipurpose Room.

"This panel will address some of the causes of the mortgage crisis, as well as some of the personal and financial sector hardships the crisis has created,” said Dr. Christopher Meyers, director of the Kegley Institute of Ethics and panel moderator. “We are very fortunate to have true experts on the topic, including Louis Gill, director of the Bakersfield Homeless Shelter, who will speak to the direct impact on families who have lost their homes. We will also have Steve Renock, president of Kern Schools Federal Credit Union, speaking to the efforts the lending industry is undertaking to help keep people in their homes."

CSUB associate professor of economics, Aaron Hegde, will also join the panel discussion.

CSUB’s FACT to host open house on Feb. 4

A free open house at the Facility for Animal Care and Treatment (FACT) will be held at California State University, Bakersfield's Environmental Studies Area on Saturday, Feb. 4. The open house runs from 1 to 4 p.m.

Tours of FACT feature talks and demonstrations with live birds of prey, including hawks, owls and golden eagles. CSUB biology students will give visitors an opportunity to make a recycled journal and go on a scavenger hunt. Members of CSUB's 60+ Club will sell nature gifts, T-shirts, note cards, coloring books, zoo books, and other items.

FACT is a wildlife rescue and conservation education project founded in 1975 by Ted Murphy, CSUB emeritus professor of biology. FACT students and volunteers care for hundreds of injured or orphaned birds of prey and conduct tours of the facility and classroom programs for thousands of Kern County school children each year. FACT is supported by the annual barbecue, members of Friends of FACT, and the sale of gift items.

Author to bring California civil rights history to CSUB

The Walter Stiern Library at California State University, Bakersfield, is kicking off a new speaker series, “Walter Presents,” with an exhibit and author visit focused on the history of civil rights in California.

“Wherever There’s a Fight” is an eight-panel exhibit on display through Feb. 10 featuring the fight for civil liberties in California spanning from the Gold Rush to the post-9/11 era. The exhibit is based on a book by the same name by authors Elaine Elinson and Stan Yogi, both former staffers for the American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California. The book tells the stories of individuals – many of whom may not appear in California history lessons – who stood up for their rights in fights against discrimination, segregation, and other injustices.

Co-author Elinson will give a talk and sign copies of the book at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25, in the Dezember Reading Room of the Walter Stiern Library. The event is free and open to the public. A limited number of reserved parking spaces will be available for free in Lot D behind the library; otherwise visitors may purchase a $5 parking pass.

“Libraries have always been at the forefront in the fight for civil liberties so it’s very appropriate that we launch our new lecture series with an exhibit about civil liberties and a talk by a speaker as distinguished as Elaine Elinson,” said Curt Asher, Interim Dean of the Walter Stiern Library.

Elinson is an author, journalist, and media consultant with legal and social justice organizations. She served as the communications director of the ACLU of Northern California and editor of the ACLU News for more than 20 years. She was named a Library Laureate by the San Francisco Public Library in April 2010. “Wherever There’s a Fight,” published by Heyday Books in 2009, was awarded a Gold Medal in the 2010 California Book Awards.

One example she cites in which Kern County played a key battlefield in a fight for freedom of speech was when the Board of Supervisors banned “The Grapes of Wrath” from schools and libraries after the book was published in 1939 – prompting Bakersfield’s chief librarian Gretchen Knief to fight back.

“I want to share with the students and Bakersfield community the stories of some unsung heroes who have fought for all of our rights,” Elinson said. “People we may not have heard of, but who stood up against injustice and inequality. I hope that their stories will inspire others to be vigilant about our civil rights and civil liberties, and to know that each of us has a role to play in protecting them.”

“Wherever There’s a Fight” is presented by the Walter Stiern Library, and sponsored by the CSUB Associated Students Incorporated and the CSUB Public History Institute. Copies of the book will be available for sale during the Jan. 25 event. Library hours for public viewing of the exhibit are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The library is closed on Saturdays. Volunteers sought for Kern County Regional Science Bowl

California State University, Bakersfield is seeking volunteers for the 20th annual Kern County Regional Science Bowl. The competition is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, at CSUB from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This year marks the 16th year the local Science Bowl has been hosted by CSUB.

The event features 32 five-member teams from 16 Kern County high schools competing in a question-answer quiz format that covers physics, math, computer science and astronomy. Matches consist of two eight-minute halves. Each match will have three officials in the room: a moderator, who will read the questions, a timekeeper and a scorekeeper.

The top two teams advance to the finals and compete in a double-elimination round, with the winner advancing to the National Science Bowl, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C., April 26 -30.

Event organizers are seeking volunteers to help run the event and local businesses to donate prizes for the students. All officials must attend one training session to learn about the various positions and competition rules. The sessions are offered from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Feb. 7, 8 and 9 in Science II Room 285. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt, morning snack and lunch, courtesy of event sponsors including Occidental of Elk Hills.
