  • Applebee's Neighborhood Grill

    2 stars from lexyadore

I had much the same experience as Mlackman..I rarely speak with managers, but felt compelled to seek him out on this one! The service was awful!! Rare refills, lukewarm food, way too small portions for the price. I ordered the quesadilla burger because it looked cool.. I peeked inside and like 1/4 of my burger was missing! I used to go here atleast monthly (about 8 years ago? It was fairly soon after they opened) The service used to be great back then, I never had a complaint. This...

  • Jerry's Pizza & Pub

    4 stars from Crankpin

Pizza was very good with fresh toppings (we had a vegetarian) and the services was friendly. My only complaint is that the atmosphere is a bit shabby. Overall, very good, and I will be going back for more.

  • Tina Marie's Cafe

    4 stars from Crankpin

Tina Marie's is an honest diner with an All-American menu, huge portions, and friendly service. I went in for breakfast and couldn't finish it all because there was just too much food. I had pork chops and eggs with biscuits and gravy. They gave me two large chops that were tasty, excellent hash browns, and the best biscuits and gravy I have had so far in Bakersfield. I highly recommend this restaurant.

  • Church's Fried Chicken

    4 stars from dougglendower

Better than KFC. KFC must be eaten within fifteen minutes or it congeals into an inedible mass. Church's chicken, with a different taste and breading, kept rather well for leftovers. And the price is no comparison, beating KFC hands down by at least $2 for a comparable 12 piece meal for the gang. Service was quick and terse, but better than the slow and rude that I've come to associate with the White Lane/Ashe KFC. Whenever we run by the gf's 'rents place, we try to pick up a box....

  • Le Corusse Rouge

    1 star from dougglendower

Disappointment over going to a long tradition to Bakersfield, the former Hush Puppy, now the Le Courusse Rouge has fallen to the point where I finally have to say adieu. My last meal there, the traditional all-you-can eat shrimp and chicken was so undercooked that the shrimp tasted like much, and I didn't eat all I could. I didn't want to. My girlfriend offered me a sample of her prime rib, which tasted more like pot roast. Dismal. I didn't want to write this, looking back at the memories...

Frst the waiter dropped the shrip and my companions sandwich but brings my steak and thinks i'm going to eat while my companion sits and watches me. The steak was no where near a 12 once strip steak that was listed on the menue. I asked the waiter to take mine back and keep it warm until they could bring all the food back at once. A few minutes latter a new waitress comes up and says my waiter is on break. I explaned what was going on. They bring out my steak once again. No shrip and a...

  • Pyrenees Cafe

    4 stars from ardetb

Since new owners took over in aug 06, i feel that the Pyrenees has improved. they have added 2 value nights with $10 steak tuesdays ($13 with set up) and $10 baby back ribs on thursdays with set up. unlike the others that have set times for their dinners, the Pyreness has dinner hours from 5.30p to 9p, easier for those that cant get to dinner by 6p. They have became Angus certified beef carriers. they have opened for lunch on saturdays from 11a to 2p and have menudo on saturdays starting at...

  • Ching Yen

This place is sooo gross. This place is unsanitary. There were several cockroaches crawling around. That's all I need to say.

  • Grandview Asian Cuisine

    5 stars from pchhim

The food is pretty authentic to my surprise. This has been the only chinese/asian restaurant I have found it this entire town that actually tastes authentic. The soups (minus the pork) is extremely delicious. I always get the hot and sour soup or the salad to start. For dim sum I always get duck. And that duck is the correct way...the only way of peking duck. Nobody in town cooks duck as it should be except for GrandView. I love their mongolian beef and all the noodles. Place is awesome.

  • Thai House

    1 star from pchhim

I don't know what part of Thailand this restaurant represents but I hate it. I'm going to guess they are not from farther down south maybe more from the northwestern part of Thailand. But that's just my guess. The food is super terrible. Other than that it's beautiful.

  • Miyoshi Japanese

I love getting fat here. Yellow submarine is the best! Green tea tempura ice cream is divine. I love my sushi chefs!!!

  • Flame & Skewers Mediterranean

    5 stars from pchhim

As an avid eater of middle eastern cuisine, I found the place to be up to par in taste. I always get the lamb kabob. The meat wasn't over cooked or under cooked in which I usually encounter in other restaurants when I order a lamb dish in general. I love the homos with the splash of shutta (i think that's how you spell it) as garnish. Everything was pretty authentic except how the rice was seasoned. This kind of rice is traditionally prepared with saffron..But then again it is fast food...

  • P.F. Chang's

    5 stars from MEdgerle

On a recent visit to PF Chang's for my birthday, I couldn't have asked for a better experience or for better service. Our waitress was very attentive, my tea glass never hit the bottom! Lettuce Wraps, Mongolian beef and the crispy honey shrimp - it was all good!

  • La Costa Mariscos

This is by far the best mexican restaurant that I have ever been to! Maria (the owner) has always made us feel like family. The Camarones Vallarta Are to die for! But bring some gum!!!

  • Dagny's Coffee

    3 stars from CurtDalton

Like KAT, I have no complaint with the product. The coffee is superb as are the bagles and other munchies. My beef is with the level of service. I often find myself choosing Starbucks over Dagny's simply because I cannot afford to wait for the counter help at Dagny's to stop gossiping with a "regular" and serve up my coffee. I like the coffee but not enough to be late for work!

  • P.F. Chang's

    4 stars from MikeGarcia

Lots of food! They cram too many tables together though... It doesn't bother me too much but for the price of the food I'd expect a little more room. The menu doesn't have much selection if you don't get an appetizer or desert but it is great food.

  • Flame & Skewers Mediterranean

    4 stars from JYJR

This place is great for lunch, never had it for dinner but I believe the menu is the same. The meat is slow roasted on large stakes and everything is prepared in a small kitchen right behind the counter. I like their sandwiches and salads, tastes very authentic and is a pretty good value. Best of all, it is very fresh as they cut the meat off the huge piece right onto your plate.

  • Miyoshi Japanese

    5 stars from JYJR

Love their rolls, especially the fantasy roll. They have very unique dishes and everytime I go it is very fresh, which is very important for sushi. The service is good and sometimes lunch can get busy because it is a smaller restaurant, but still I like it. Same with dinner, might have to wait, but it is good japanese.

  • P.F. Chang's

    2 stars from JYJR

We tried PF Changs for the first time last month and it was kind of lackluster. The food was OK but what makes it less than great is that it is kind of expensive for what you get. For lunch, I paid 12 dollars for a single dish and it was just average. Anyway, I think with other good Chinese in Bakersfield, this might not make my list of restaurants.

  • Bill Lee's Bamboo Chopsticks

    5 stars from JYJR

Great food and great value for the family. I had not been back for a few years after moving away but am back now and the entire family still likes going here. The food is great tasting and a great value. Always very fresh and very unique flavors. Best of all, the value is great. With all the new restaurants, it is good to try but some of them can get pretty pricey! Service has been good whenever I go. I love their potstickers and wo won ton soup! Lots of vegetables and a lot of meat. I need...

even though I agree that the food quality and service isnt what it was when I was young I still like the place. It used to be my favorite place to go but sadly it isnt any more. But one of my favoite things about the place then and now is still the french bread, butter, and salsa that has stayed the same thank goodness!!!!!!! I always buy extra salsa when I go in. But it's been quite a long time now sadly, since i've been there. I also like the decor it hasn't changed and brings me back to my...

  • Little Caesar's Pizza

    2 stars from lexyadore

Poor service. Very unsanitary workers. I was very dissapointed here. I stopped by on a 'hot and ready' tuesday.. figureing, good they have pizzas ready, I can just pick one up on my way home, I was there for 30 mins! I could have gotten home, ordered one, and had it delivered to me from another place faster than that! At a prime time (it was about 5:45pm) there were only 2 employees there, one I had no idea what they were doing,, in the back wandering around, not making pizzas, and one girl...

  • Wienerschnitzel

    1 star from dougglendower

I had to update this, as this place has gone way downhill. The new interior is great, but the manager is the same uncaring, disinterested person as always, and her new crew is taking her demenor on themselves. I stood at the counter whilst five disinterested employees gossiped, texted, and split a bowl of ramen. The manager refused to come out to address another patron's issue that the store was kept too warm. Finally, the trays were not even washed after use in a three-compartment sink, but...

  • Mc Donald's Hamburgers

    1 star from dougglendower

While the counter help is fast and friendly, the management is totally unconcerned with the customers in the store. The drive thru seems to be their end-all-be-all of their existence, and those who are not willing to idle their cars in an age of $3 gas pay the concequences. When many people are inside trying to order, and one person valiantly tries to help them all, one might think to call up additional help to the front end, but not here. 30 minutes passed before a single person was...

  • Don Pepe's

    4 stars from dougglendower

Lunch at Don Pepe's has become kind of an institution for me and the gang. For $6.50, you get a drink and the two-item platter that's a far sight better than Taco Bell. The food's not as spicy as some places, but does not lack for flavor. The tacos are a little on the small side, but are not shorted for filling. The enchiladas and tamales are wonderful, the guacamole and tea fresh. One could do far, far worse for a regular eatery so why not make such a nice place a stop for lunch once in a...

  • Dewar's Candy Store

    5 stars from dougglendower

It's old fashioned, cramped, and kind of noisy... and I wouldn't want it any other way. The nuances of Dewar's are all in the above, the way it seems dropped from the '50s with few updates at all. The ice cream is still spectacular, far better than the recent importing of a chain could be, and the candies are still such a temptation despite my poor dental record. Who could, truly, say no to a Bakersfield institution such as this? If the old-fashioned and small quarters offend, one can always...

  • Bill Lee's Bamboo Chopsticks

    5 stars from dougglendower

Amazing, even after all these years. Sitting in the restaurant took me back almost fifteen years, the bustle and the smells of the kitchen, the soft lighted decor, the great staff. I finally broke down and took my girlfriend there to show her what it was like, my heart in my throat that it would some how have changed. But the food was superb, the help wonderful, and the price not as steep as I remembered. There is no excuse to not make this wonderful piece of Bakersfield a regular spot on...

  • Azul

    4 stars from baketown

Some friends and I recently had dinner at the newly refurbished Azul downtown. Once the home to long time watering hole Suds Tavern (the first bar ever I went to) the space has made many changes over the years. The last business to last for any length of time was Paco’s Tacos. I was sorry to see them go. Azul replaced Paco’s for awhile, then closed down to update the place. Update they did. Azul is now a trendy LAesque sushi restaurant. I’m not an expert on sushi by any means, but I...

  • Sushi Kato

    5 stars from scastillo

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in town. It's very traditional and the food is always delicious. I particularly am fond of there sushi, Unagi. Absolutely great service and great experience everytime I come.

  • Applebee's Neighborhood Grill

    3 stars from scastillo

Depending on what time and day you come this place, you never know what the food will taste like. I've been here on a Friday evening and my food was not good at all. I decided to give it another chance and went a few weeks later for lunch, somewhat calmer than a Friday night, and the food was great.

  • Azul

    5 stars from rxgirl1984

UPDATE: If you want Azul's sushi, I would recommend going on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night for dinner after 6:30pm for couples or small groups. Lunch is not running. I'll keep you all posted and thanks for waiting :) LOVE this place for many reasons. My friends own Azul and they have worked so hard to make it as beautiful as it is today. I've tried almost all of the rolls and sashimi and it is all so delicious! Try the sashimi salad, Plantano roll and the Azul roll, very...

  • La Cabana

    4 stars from ProgressivePete2

I really like La Cabaña. Getting take out is a pleasant experience. I ordered at the restaurant and the hostess that took my order was very careful to get exactly what I wanted. She even took the time to show me what was in each container, and the order was perfect. Eating in is also pleasant. The decor is up to date the place is clean and the food is good. This is also a great place for breakfast if you get tired of the greasy spoons in town.

  • Thai House

    5 stars from matylda

A diverse menu with seasonal specials (the Pumpkin Curry is a must-try!) and friendly service makes this one of my favorite Thai restaurants in town. It's not a huge space, but that's what makes it cozy.

  • Cottage Sandwich Shop

    5 stars from matylda

Eat here for delicious, gigantic, affordable sandwiches! I opted for the veggie sandwich because there is so much on it: a generous layering of several kinds of veggies along with cream cheese and guacamole on a choice of several kinds of bread. Most sandwiches are around $5.

  • Wool Growers

    5 stars from rkkboo

Woolgrowers is always a pleasant experience I recommend the "setup" for light eaters but my favorite is garlic chicken with extra garlic and for dessert blue cheese, on sourdough and coffee. I live in WA now and make a special trip every three months to dine there

  • Wool Growers

    2 stars from bembry

Hey--I agree that Woolgrowers is an institution, and the atmosphere is great as well--been going here 30+ years. . .But. . .the food is really falling off. The Lamb chops are small and dry, the Garlic Chicken greasy. Try Pyrenees for food and atmosphere, or Benjis for friendliness and awesome food as well. Woolgrowers is more hype than the real thing anymore.

  • Great Wraps

They're opening another store in Rosedale. I won't have to drive so far. So, they aren't closing. We need different places to eat. They treat me well and their food is fantastic!!

  • Yoshinoya Beef Bowl

    1 star from shellyray

I have to agree with nooneisabovethelaw . When they first opened in the early 80s (I think) it was pretty good but, now it is the pits. The last time I went about a yr. ago & only because there was no place else around I ordered took about 3 bites & in the garbage it went (& I was hungry till then). My opinion, don't waste your money there. Shelly D.

  • Happy Jacks Hamburger & Pie

Terrific hamburger, the "Rudy" Pie is great! If you are looking for a great tasting burger, this is the place!!!

  • Dewar's Candy Store

    2 stars from YGH

The look of the place is not impressive, the ice cream is not that good. Very tacky that they use a number machine without seating for the waiting customers.

I had the shrimp bowl? Was it really shrimp? It was so bad I had to go somewhere else and eat again.

  • Alberto's Mexican Food

    4 stars from Crankpin

I grew up on Alberto's in San Diego and I can tell you I was very excited about seeing one here in Bakersfield. I previously lived in Los Angeles and there was not one Alberto's that I found in the whole town. The signature meal, in my opinion, is the carne asada burrito and, man, do they do it right. Not the highest quality meat, but great flavor and with a moist and well-grilled authentic tortilla, no beans or rice as filler, and tasty pico de gallo. Eating this massive burrito again...
