  • Bill Lee's Bamboo Chopsticks

    5 stars from kathyannholland

I have been eating here for about 10 years and proud to say that its my favorite place to eat in Bakersfield! The food is great and so are the drinks.

  • Wienerschnitzel

    1 star from dougglendower

I had to update this, as this place has gone way downhill. The new interior is great, but the manager is the same uncaring, disinterested person as always, and her new crew is taking her demenor on themselves. I stood at the counter whilst five disinterested employees gossiped, texted, and split a bowl of ramen. The manager refused to come out to address another patron's issue that the store was kept too warm. Finally, the trays were not even washed after use in a three-compartment sink, but...

  • Mc Donald's Hamburgers

    1 star from dougglendower

While the counter help is fast and friendly, the management is totally unconcerned with the customers in the store. The drive thru seems to be their end-all-be-all of their existence, and those who are not willing to idle their cars in an age of $3 gas pay the concequences. When many people are inside trying to order, and one person valiantly tries to help them all, one might think to call up additional help to the front end, but not here. 30 minutes passed before a single person was...

  • Don Pepe's

    4 stars from dougglendower

Lunch at Don Pepe's has become kind of an institution for me and the gang. For $6.50, you get a drink and the two-item platter that's a far sight better than Taco Bell. The food's not as spicy as some places, but does not lack for flavor. The tacos are a little on the small side, but are not shorted for filling. The enchiladas and tamales are wonderful, the guacamole and tea fresh. One could do far, far worse for a regular eatery so why not make such a nice place a stop for lunch once in a...

  • Dewar's Candy Store

    5 stars from dougglendower

It's old fashioned, cramped, and kind of noisy... and I wouldn't want it any other way. The nuances of Dewar's are all in the above, the way it seems dropped from the '50s with few updates at all. The ice cream is still spectacular, far better than the recent importing of a chain could be, and the candies are still such a temptation despite my poor dental record. Who could, truly, say no to a Bakersfield institution such as this? If the old-fashioned and small quarters offend, one can always...

  • Bill Lee's Bamboo Chopsticks

    5 stars from dougglendower

Amazing, even after all these years. Sitting in the restaurant took me back almost fifteen years, the bustle and the smells of the kitchen, the soft lighted decor, the great staff. I finally broke down and took my girlfriend there to show her what it was like, my heart in my throat that it would some how have changed. But the food was superb, the help wonderful, and the price not as steep as I remembered. There is no excuse to not make this wonderful piece of Bakersfield a regular spot on...

  • Azul

    4 stars from baketown

Some friends and I recently had dinner at the newly refurbished Azul downtown. Once the home to long time watering hole Suds Tavern (the first bar ever I went to) the space has made many changes over the years. The last business to last for any length of time was Paco’s Tacos. I was sorry to see them go. Azul replaced Paco’s for awhile, then closed down to update the place. Update they did. Azul is now a trendy LAesque sushi restaurant. I’m not an expert on sushi by any means, but I...

  • Sushi Kato

    5 stars from scastillo

This is my favorite Japanese restaurant in town. It's very traditional and the food is always delicious. I particularly am fond of there sushi, Unagi. Absolutely great service and great experience everytime I come.

  • Applebee's Neighborhood Grill

    3 stars from scastillo

Depending on what time and day you come this place, you never know what the food will taste like. I've been here on a Friday evening and my food was not good at all. I decided to give it another chance and went a few weeks later for lunch, somewhat calmer than a Friday night, and the food was great.

  • Azul

    5 stars from rxgirl1984

UPDATE: If you want Azul's sushi, I would recommend going on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night for dinner after 6:30pm for couples or small groups. Lunch is not running. I'll keep you all posted and thanks for waiting :) LOVE this place for many reasons. My friends own Azul and they have worked so hard to make it as beautiful as it is today. I've tried almost all of the rolls and sashimi and it is all so delicious! Try the sashimi salad, Plantano roll and the Azul roll, very...

  • Casa Mexico

    3 stars from Tiz4Tigger

Food is good...service is great....will cater to your needs if not on the menu.

  • La Cabana

    4 stars from ProgressivePete2

I really like La Cabaña. Getting take out is a pleasant experience. I ordered at the restaurant and the hostess that took my order was very careful to get exactly what I wanted. She even took the time to show me what was in each container, and the order was perfect. Eating in is also pleasant. The decor is up to date the place is clean and the food is good. This is also a great place for breakfast if you get tired of the greasy spoons in town.

  • Thai House

    5 stars from matylda

A diverse menu with seasonal specials (the Pumpkin Curry is a must-try!) and friendly service makes this one of my favorite Thai restaurants in town. It's not a huge space, but that's what makes it cozy.

  • Cottage Sandwich Shop

    5 stars from matylda

Eat here for delicious, gigantic, affordable sandwiches! I opted for the veggie sandwich because there is so much on it: a generous layering of several kinds of veggies along with cream cheese and guacamole on a choice of several kinds of bread. Most sandwiches are around $5.

  • Wool Growers Restaurant

    5 stars from rkkboo

Woolgrowers is always a pleasant experience I recommend the "setup" for light eaters but my favorite is garlic chicken with extra garlic and for dessert blue cheese, on sourdough and coffee. I live in WA now and make a special trip every three months to dine there

  • Wool Growers Restaurant

    2 stars from bembry

Hey--I agree that Woolgrowers is an institution, and the atmosphere is great as well--been going here 30+ years. . .But. . .the food is really falling off. The Lamb chops are small and dry, the Garlic Chicken greasy. Try Pyrenees for food and atmosphere, or Benjis for friendliness and awesome food as well. Woolgrowers is more hype than the real thing anymore.

  • Great Wraps

    5 stars from picky1

They're opening another store in Rosedale. I won't have to drive so far. So, they aren't closing. We need different places to eat. They treat me well and their food is fantastic!!

  • Yoshinoya Beef Bowl

    1 star from shellyray

I have to agree with nooneisabovethelaw . When they first opened in the early 80s (I think) it was pretty good but, now it is the pits. The last time I went about a yr. ago & only because there was no place else around I ordered took about 3 bites & in the garbage it went (& I was hungry till then). My opinion, don't waste your money there. Shelly D.

  • Haute Decor

    5 stars from redrose

nice shop with friendly owners and great home decor to choose from

  • Valentien

    5 stars from SoCaMuscle

I have loved this place for a long time, but now under new ownership, Jeramy Brown only makes this place better! They will have more events (blind tasting, etc....) the place will see even more improvements.

  • Happy Jacks Hamburger & Pie

    5 stars from kauf_joe

Terrific hamburger, the "Rudy" Pie is great! If you are looking for a great tasting burger, this is the place!!!

  • Dewar's Candy Store

    2 stars from YGH

The look of the place is not impressive, the ice cream is not that good. Very tacky that they use a number machine without seating for the waiting customers.

  • Bakersfield Pet Nanny

One word.... ok two... The BEST!

  • Yoshinoya Beef Bowl

    1 star from pchhim

I had the shrimp bowl? Was it really shrimp? It was so bad I had to go somewhere else and eat again.

  • Alberto's Mexican Food

    4 stars from Crankpin

I grew up on Alberto's in San Diego and I can tell you I was very excited about seeing one here in Bakersfield. I previously lived in Los Angeles and there was not one Alberto's that I found in the whole town. The signature meal, in my opinion, is the carne asada burrito and, man, do they do it right. Not the highest quality meat, but great flavor and with a moist and well-grilled authentic tortilla, no beans or rice as filler, and tasty pico de gallo. Eating this massive burrito again...

  • P.F. Chang's

    5 stars from aeromike

The atmoshphere in this restaurant is very inviting. The food is excellent. Thier Mongolian Beef is excellent! We also had the Orange Chicken very well done! Thier eggplant dish is excellent. The food and atmoshpere is worth the price! We will go back there again!

  • Yoshinoya Beef Bowl

    1 star from nooneisabovethelaw

Unfortunately, Yoshinoya has gone down in quality since I first ate at one in the late '80s in L.A. I was gratified to see one opening here, as it used to provide good quality Japanese fast food at a reasonable price. The price is still reasonable but the product is not what it used to be. On the positive side, the rice is good. That's about it.

  • Sinaloa

    3 stars from tonib

The quality of food and service has diminished .... we've been eating there for about 40 years (off and on over the years).

  • Baja Fresh Mexican Grill

    4 stars from tonib

My husband and three co-workers stopped here after driving from Northern California. He came home and told me how really good the food was (especially for a "chain). We were in Lancaster a couple of weeks later and had lunch at Chipotle. I asked my husband to make a comparison between Baja Fresh and Chipotle and he said Baja Fresh would be his choice between the two. That is one heck of a recommendation from someone who thrives on healthy, great tasting Mexican food .... regardless of...

  • Honolulu Hawaiian BBQ

    4 stars from djwish

I was pleasantly suprised with this place! I stopped in one afternoon for lunch and I'm glad I did. The atmosphere reminds me of Kentos. Prices are reasonable. It's probably one of the better Asian-style fast food restaurants I've tried. I would eat here again.

  • Wasabi Express

    2 stars from djwish

I haven't been impressed with this place, the food isn't very good and the prices aren't equal with the quality of the food. It's like a fast food joint that serves sushi and teriyaki. The only good thing about it is the location. You're way better off driving a few blocks to Myoshi and get some real sushi.

  • Yoshinoya Beef Bowl

    1 star from djwish

this place is awful!!!! i ordered a beef bowl there, and there was more grissle (FAT) in it than meat!!! I couldn't even eat it. I'll never go back.

  • Yoshinoya Beef Bowl

    1 star from mwill15

Place was very clean, food seemed to be "commercial" "out of the can". Would be alot better if they used fresh veggies.

  • Valentien

    5 stars from jenwrigley

Valentein is a wonderful restaurant. The food, wine and atmosphere make dining out in Bakersfield a memorable experience.

  • Foster's Old Fashion Freeze

    2 stars from YGH

Very disappointed in Fosters.. In the old days it was great, but after visiting there recently it just isn't the same. They don't take credit cards, they charge .45 for debit cards. The hamburgers weren't special (whopper taste better), the sundaes were not what they use to be... The food is just like any other greasy spoon. I rather go to Sonic then spend my time there.

  • Too Fat Sandwich Shop

    4 stars from MikeGarcia

I had pretty slow service but the employees tried to be kind about it. The food was really good. I'll recommend this place to anybody that wants a great sandwich. I noticed that a few things on the menu where only served on certain days. Something to take note of if your favorite is tri-tip.

  • Honolulu Hawaiian BBQ

    5 stars from plyswfire

Stopped by this place out of curiosity on a Sunday afternoon. The staff (appeared to be the owners) were very nice and helpful in figuring out what to try. Food was good and really did remind me of the "plate meals" I tried in Hawaii. Good food and a different atmosphere. I'll definitely be back.

  • Great Wraps

    5 stars from plyswfire

My wife and I have ate there about 3 of 4 times now, and love the wraps. My wife has tried a flat bread sandwich, but likes the wraps better. Service has always been above and beyond expectation. I think if they were out in the Market Place or someplace in Rosedale they would be packed. There current location just doesn't suit them well. I hope the review that they are closing is wrong, as this is one of my favorite lunch stops.

  • Rusty's Pizza Parlor

    4 stars from dougglendower

Still kind of pricy for pizza, but a pretty decent pizza. It didn't taste like it came out of a box, and more suprizingly, the thin crust wasn't all limp like Rusty's used to be (at this location at least) just a few years ago. Delivery was prompt, but the delivery charge seems too high to me for a regular event type pizza. But if you're tired of Dominoes and Pizza Hut's blah pizza, Rusty's isn't a bad alternative.

  • Foster's Old Fashion Freeze

    3 stars from dougglendower

The drive thru menu board is darned hard to read, and is not very well laid out. The fries were well cooked, but the burger was kind of soggy. A cut above most of the chains, a hair below some other smaller burger-and-fry institutions. A wholly average experience.

  • Valentien

    5 stars from jennifercb

What a treasure for Bakersfield to have a restaurant as creative and beautiful in food design as Valentien's. Each visit has delighted us with wonderful combinations and flavors with amazing presentation. It's truly a fine dining experience!

Frozen Yogurt is very good. The service is also great. Greeted with a smile. You feel welcomed at this business. Makes everything better.

  • Cactus Valley Mexican Restaurant

    5 stars from kernrivergal63

My family and I have eaten here for years and we love the food and salsa. They do have new owners and the prices have gone up somewhat. I feel that the only thing that they are really lacking are more servers. The servers that they do have are awesome...they just need more help.

  • Bill Lee's Bamboo Chopsticks

    3 stars from nooneisabovethelaw

Food is fair and a decent value. Stay away from the house wines. Blech! And the decor is an odd mix of funky '70s and classic Chinese. It's not to my taste, nor is the furniture, which looks like it was cast off from a Courtyard by Marriott breakfast area.

  • Great Castle Chinese Restaurant

    1 star from nooneisabovethelaw

Ick. Ick. Ick. If you like your Chinese food with a side of grease and cockroaches, this is the place for you. Ick.

  • Bill Lee's Bamboo Chopsticks

My favorite Chinese restaurant. The Chow-Mein is the best in the city. So is their paper-wrapped chicken. Super!

  • Great Castle Chinese Restaurant

Two words: Walnut Shrimp. Ah, my mouth waters just thinking about it. This is a favorite place of mine and my co-workers and I've always had excellent food and great service.

  • Mauricio's Grill & Cantina

    1 star from nooneisabovethelaw

Y'know, the food at Mauricio's is fine, and the price is a tad high. I haven't been to the Rosedale location lately, which is head and shoulders over this one. However, I did eat recently at the White Lane location and the place was FILTHY. Tables need a good scrubbing, as do the walls and seats, and it would be a good idea to vaccuum under the tables from time to time. The thought being, I really don't like to put my feet on food, nor park my posterior on food-covered upholstery. It's...
