Depending on what time and day you come this place, you never know what the food will taste like. I've been here on a Friday evening and my food was not good at all. I decided to give it another chance and went a few weeks later for lunch, somewhat calmer than a Friday night, and the food was great.
UPDATE: If you want Azul's sushi, I would recommend going on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night for dinner after 6:30pm for couples or small groups. Lunch is not running. I'll keep you all posted and thanks for waiting :) LOVE this place for many reasons. My friends own Azul and they have worked so hard to make it as beautiful as it is today. I've tried almost all of the rolls and sashimi and it is all so delicious! Try the sashimi salad, Plantano roll and the Azul roll, very...
Food is good...service is great....will cater to your needs if not on the menu.
I really like La CabaƱa. Getting take out is a pleasant experience. I ordered at the restaurant and the hostess that took my order was very careful to get exactly what I wanted. She even took the time to show me what was in each container, and the order was perfect. Eating in is also pleasant. The decor is up to date the place is clean and the food is good. This is also a great place for breakfast if you get tired of the greasy spoons in town.
A diverse menu with seasonal specials (the Pumpkin Curry is a must-try!) and friendly service makes this one of my favorite Thai restaurants in town. It's not a huge space, but that's what makes it cozy.
Eat here for delicious, gigantic, affordable sandwiches! I opted for the veggie sandwich because there is so much on it: a generous layering of several kinds of veggies along with cream cheese and guacamole on a choice of several kinds of bread. Most sandwiches are around $5.
Woolgrowers is always a pleasant experience I recommend the "setup" for light eaters but my favorite is garlic chicken with extra garlic and for dessert blue cheese, on sourdough and coffee. I live in WA now and make a special trip every three months to dine there
Hey--I agree that Woolgrowers is an institution, and the atmosphere is great as well--been going here 30+ years. . .But. . .the food is really falling off. The Lamb chops are small and dry, the Garlic Chicken greasy. Try Pyrenees for food and atmosphere, or Benjis for friendliness and awesome food as well. Woolgrowers is more hype than the real thing anymore.
They're opening another store in Rosedale. I won't have to drive so far. So, they aren't closing. We need different places to eat. They treat me well and their food is fantastic!!
I have to agree with nooneisabovethelaw . When they first opened in the early 80s (I think) it was pretty good but, now it is the pits. The last time I went about a yr. ago & only because there was no place else around I ordered took about 3 bites & in the garbage it went (& I was hungry till then). My opinion, don't waste your money there. Shelly D.
nice shop with friendly owners and great home decor to choose from
I have loved this place for a long time, but now under new ownership, Jeramy Brown only makes this place better! They will have more events (blind tasting, etc....) the place will see even more improvements.
Terrific hamburger, the "Rudy" Pie is great! If you are looking for a great tasting burger, this is the place!!!
The look of the place is not impressive, the ice cream is not that good. Very tacky that they use a number machine without seating for the waiting customers.
One word.... ok two... The BEST!
I had the shrimp bowl? Was it really shrimp? It was so bad I had to go somewhere else and eat again.
I grew up on Alberto's in San Diego and I can tell you I was very excited about seeing one here in Bakersfield. I previously lived in Los Angeles and there was not one Alberto's that I found in the whole town. The signature meal, in my opinion, is the carne asada burrito and, man, do they do it right. Not the highest quality meat, but great flavor and with a moist and well-grilled authentic tortilla, no beans or rice as filler, and tasty pico de gallo. Eating this massive burrito again...
The atmoshphere in this restaurant is very inviting. The food is excellent. Thier Mongolian Beef is excellent! We also had the Orange Chicken very well done! Thier eggplant dish is excellent. The food and atmoshpere is worth the price! We will go back there again!
Unfortunately, Yoshinoya has gone down in quality since I first ate at one in the late '80s in L.A. I was gratified to see one opening here, as it used to provide good quality Japanese fast food at a reasonable price. The price is still reasonable but the product is not what it used to be. On the positive side, the rice is good. That's about it.
The quality of food and service has diminished .... we've been eating there for about 40 years (off and on over the years).
My husband and three co-workers stopped here after driving from Northern California. He came home and told me how really good the food was (especially for a "chain). We were in Lancaster a couple of weeks later and had lunch at Chipotle. I asked my husband to make a comparison between Baja Fresh and Chipotle and he said Baja Fresh would be his choice between the two. That is one heck of a recommendation from someone who thrives on healthy, great tasting Mexican food .... regardless of...
I was pleasantly suprised with this place! I stopped in one afternoon for lunch and I'm glad I did. The atmosphere reminds me of Kentos. Prices are reasonable. It's probably one of the better Asian-style fast food restaurants I've tried. I would eat here again.
I haven't been impressed with this place, the food isn't very good and the prices aren't equal with the quality of the food. It's like a fast food joint that serves sushi and teriyaki. The only good thing about it is the location. You're way better off driving a few blocks to Myoshi and get some real sushi.
this place is awful!!!! i ordered a beef bowl there, and there was more grissle (FAT) in it than meat!!! I couldn't even eat it. I'll never go back.
Place was very clean, food seemed to be "commercial" "out of the can". Would be alot better if they used fresh veggies.
Valentein is a wonderful restaurant. The food, wine and atmosphere make dining out in Bakersfield a memorable experience.
Very disappointed in Fosters.. In the old days it was great, but after visiting there recently it just isn't the same. They don't take credit cards, they charge .45 for debit cards. The hamburgers weren't special (whopper taste better), the sundaes were not what they use to be... The food is just like any other greasy spoon. I rather go to Sonic then spend my time there.
I had pretty slow service but the employees tried to be kind about it. The food was really good. I'll recommend this place to anybody that wants a great sandwich. I noticed that a few things on the menu where only served on certain days. Something to take note of if your favorite is tri-tip.
Stopped by this place out of curiosity on a Sunday afternoon. The staff (appeared to be the owners) were very nice and helpful in figuring out what to try. Food was good and really did remind me of the "plate meals" I tried in Hawaii. Good food and a different atmosphere. I'll definitely be back.
My wife and I have ate there about 3 of 4 times now, and love the wraps. My wife has tried a flat bread sandwich, but likes the wraps better. Service has always been above and beyond expectation. I think if they were out in the Market Place or someplace in Rosedale they would be packed. There current location just doesn't suit them well. I hope the review that they are closing is wrong, as this is one of my favorite lunch stops.
Still kind of pricy for pizza, but a pretty decent pizza. It didn't taste like it came out of a box, and more suprizingly, the thin crust wasn't all limp like Rusty's used to be (at this location at least) just a few years ago. Delivery was prompt, but the delivery charge seems too high to me for a regular event type pizza. But if you're tired of Dominoes and Pizza Hut's blah pizza, Rusty's isn't a bad alternative.
The drive thru menu board is darned hard to read, and is not very well laid out. The fries were well cooked, but the burger was kind of soggy. A cut above most of the chains, a hair below some other smaller burger-and-fry institutions. A wholly average experience.
One word..chineechickensalad
Great Castle Chinese Restaurant
went one time..I tried their famous cock roach plate ..actually when the roach hit the floor coming out from under the menu on our table we kinda lost our appetite and left..theres alot better chinese food out there
What a treasure for Bakersfield to have a restaurant as creative and beautiful in food design as Valentien's. Each visit has delighted us with wonderful combinations and flavors with amazing presentation. It's truly a fine dining experience!
Frozen Yogurt is very good. The service is also great. Greeted with a smile. You feel welcomed at this business. Makes everything better.
Cactus Valley Mexican Restaurant
My family and I have eaten here for years and we love the food and salsa. They do have new owners and the prices have gone up somewhat. I feel that the only thing that they are really lacking are more servers. The servers that they do have are awesome...they just need more help.
Food is fair and a decent value. Stay away from the house wines. Blech! And the decor is an odd mix of funky '70s and classic Chinese. It's not to my taste, nor is the furniture, which looks like it was cast off from a Courtyard by Marriott breakfast area.
Great Castle Chinese Restaurant
Ick. Ick. Ick. If you like your Chinese food with a side of grease and cockroaches, this is the place for you. Ick.
My favorite Chinese restaurant. The Chow-Mein is the best in the city. So is their paper-wrapped chicken. Super!
Great Castle Chinese Restaurant
Two words: Walnut Shrimp. Ah, my mouth waters just thinking about it. This is a favorite place of mine and my co-workers and I've always had excellent food and great service.
Y'know, the food at Mauricio's is fine, and the price is a tad high. I haven't been to the Rosedale location lately, which is head and shoulders over this one. However, I did eat recently at the White Lane location and the place was FILTHY. Tables need a good scrubbing, as do the walls and seats, and it would be a good idea to vaccuum under the tables from time to time. The thought being, I really don't like to put my feet on food, nor park my posterior on food-covered upholstery. It's...
I think it is to bad people from other cities come here and complain about business that has been here for as long as I have been born!! Obviously they must be doing something right they have been here for many years! We all have fond memories of going to Dewar's and the good ice cream. My daughter moved to Louisiana and when she got married we took boxes of chews to give to people as a thank you. They all raved about the chews and when ever we go we always take boxes with us! Dewar's is...
Cactus Valley Mexican Restaurant
What happened to this place? Did they get new management or new cooks? They won a best of bakersfield award for best salsa a few years ago, now it is very plain and ordinary. I've made better salsa at home with very little effort. The service was ok, but it sure as heck doesn't make up for the lousy food and booring salsa. It didn't help them any that I got the vomiting stomach flu after eating there. There are plenty of better mexican restaurants in town than this one. Don't bother with...
We scheduled a party one week in advance, called that day to confirm, everything was ok until we arrived. They didn't have our reservations and it was suppose to be a "Surprise Party" needless to say, we had to wait for a table and my husband wasn't surprised. No comp included and no apology.
Service was slow, price was high
To be fair Dewars is tasty, but I don't write home about it. And actually, the chews upset my stomach. But, it is tradition. My favorite ice creams ever were found in two places. "Real"ly old-fashioned ice cream made by the church elders during socials. Nothing can beat the well-done homeade. The second was a shop in my hometown called Goodrich Dairies. Hard ice cream is must for me.
I'm not sure what to make of an 8-year-old food critic who has found an ice cream he doesn't like. Dewar's could be a litmus test for your ability to assimilate to Bakersfield. What temerity it takes to move into somebody else's town and tear apart a traditional institution? I don't go to L.A., Kathy Bates, and tell you how much better the movies made in Canada are. Is the salt water taffy in Redondo Beach worth whatever price per pound it costs? Frankly if I had to list the...
My mom comes to Texas every year and I have her bring me the Peanut Butter/Peppermint chews. The one thing I really miss the most is their punch. I haven't had any in quite some time but will be looking forward to it this summer. I am glad to see them still in business.
My family and I went to Dewars Saturday night. The kids love it, the ice cream is GREAT and the service is alway good.
