  • Mama Roomba

    5 stars from txiki

This may be the most unique restaurant in a town known for blandless and franchised food. This tiny little Caribbean-Latin eatery features everything from sopa de tortilla, fried squid, Cuban sandwiches, a WONDERFUL warm spinach salad, dessert flan ... .need I go on. This is locally owned and we can only help he makes it. Located in the heart of town, it's a perfect lunch place.

  • Dagny's Coffee

    5 stars from txiki

This is a terrific downtown (and locally owned) coffee shop, a nice change from Starbucks. There is always an ecletic mix of folks hanging around: local politicos, gaggles of young people in Bible study, local business people, artsy types, cyclists in their Lycras. Go there enough and you will certainly run into someone you know. They also sell wonderful lunch sandwiches made by the caterer Lisa Borda. I think the coffee here surpasses Starbucks.

  • Valentien

    5 stars from txiki

Arguably the very best restaurant in Bakersfield. This is high cuisine with a terrific wine list. There's not other place like this in town. Very small and intimate, make sure you make reservations. The only worrisome factor: apparently there is a change of ownership under way. Let's hope it keeps its high standards. If you havent' tried this place, you should. Always good service to boot.

  • Uricchio's Trattoria

    4 stars from txiki

This joint is always consistent and the service is always top notch. Terrific linguine vongole and make sure to try the lettuce wedge. The family that owns this place always makes you feel welcome. As good at lunch as it is at dinner.

  • Luigi's

    5 stars from llindsey17

Saturdays are the ABSOLUTE BEST days to go to Luigi's....roll into the bar about 10:30 for a bloody, and Margo (the bar maid) will tell you, "What are you doing here so early!?" "Well Margo, I gotta beat that 45 minute wait!" Seriously...plan on getting there early, or not at all....because if you get there hungry...it's all over! You'll be chewing that arm off! But the atmosphere is fantastic and you're always sure to run into someone you know! My favorites dishes on Saturdays are: THE...

  • T L Maxwell's Restaurant & Bar

    5 stars from bakoblue

I went for dinner with my sweetie and now think this is the cat's pajamas of romantic places to have dinner. Several other couples were celebrating anniversaries/birthdays/engagements the night we were there. The food was fabulous and the service was everything you hope for when going to a fine dining establishment. Very much recommended.

  • Cafe Med

    4 stars from txiki

Always on the list of Bakesfield's top restaurants, the food is always consistent, if not the service all the time. Weekends are a hoot and the martini bar is a draw for singles of all ages.

  • Luigi's

    5 stars from txiki

A Bakersfield landmark and a place you will never have a bad meal. Known for its pastas and steaks, its salads (try the Monica with a scoop of tuna) are unheralded and always delicious. The waitresses are always smiling and the place (particularly on a Friday) is full of energy. This place is a can't miss!

  • John's Burgers

    4 stars from bakoblue

Yum, yum, yum. The perfect place to go when you're looking for BURGER!!! And the fries are some of the biggest portions you'll ever see. Oh, and real shakes made out of real ice cream :o)

  • Dewar's Candy Shop

    4 stars from KATTBC

Their milkshakes are fabulous but I love their chews the most! Definitely a staple in Bakersfield! The best chew is the peanut butter one!

  • P.F. Chang's

    5 stars from KATTBC

I have been here twice. This last time I went for lunch, which is affordable, we had the best waitress named Amy. She was genuinely friendly and very good at her job. I absolutely love the Crispy Honey Chicken.........the best way to describe it is Orange Chicken but ten times better flavor.

  • Smith's Bakeries

    5 stars from KATTBC

Smith's is definitely the bakery of Bakersfield. Everyone including me loves their goods. Great cookies, great cakes and I am sure all of the other stuff is just as good. Definitely a must try if you are new here.

  • Taj Mahal Cuisine Of India

    5 stars from ProgressivePete2

Great authentic Indian food. I must warn you though. Unless you can take really spicy food, don't order the Chicken Vindaloo traditional. I only finished it out of pride, but I was sweating the whole time. As firey hot as it was, I still liked it. I might order it not so spicy next time. They also have a few Indian beers that are quite nice, and other dishes that aren't so spicy. Like the other reviewers, I also like their naan a lot. They fry it up as needed so it's really fresh. Mmmmmmm.

Three words for you: Chicken Fried Chicken!! Yummmmmm!!!!!!!

  • Don Pericos Mexican Restaurant

    5 stars from ProgressivePete2

Don Perico's is a great mexican restaurant. Possibly the best in town. It is a lively place with great food. The shrimp cocktail is very fresh and very tasty, and they have great enchiladas. This is the only place I know of where you can order a whole fish and have it stare at you on your plate (if you like that sort of thing). It is not uncommon to hear the waiters singing and you can really tell that the people that work there are happy. This translates into really great service and food....

  • 24th Street Cafe

    4 stars from bakoblue

Undeniably great breakfasts, which is why you'll see folks lined up on the weekends, rain or shine.

  • Taj Mahal Cuisine Of India

    5 stars from Motoko

Very good Indian food! They have expanded into larger site now, so we do not have to wait on the line for your quick lunch run! They have a good buffet and that is a good start for those who have not tried Indian food in the past.......and also great for those "regular" who loves Indian food and want to try everything!

  • T L Maxwell's Restaurant & Bar

    3 stars from matylda

Tucked away in an alley, this restaurant transports you to a different world when you enter. The back of the menu says it's the oldest building in downtown Bako, and the historic vibes add to the experience. I ordered the Salmon Port lunch special, which sounded more extravagant than it looked. It was odd to receive a slab of salmon with sauce poured over it placed in the middle of a rice-covered plate. There were no vegetables or other sides, just a plate of rice with salmon on top...

  • Korean BBQ Restaurant

    5 stars from Motoko

If I am not mistaken, this is the only Korean restaurant in town. For those who love spicy food, you must try! My favorate dish is "squid and vegetable in spicy source". The dish is very large so enough to serve for 2. Also, don't miss Korean BBQ!!

  • Lengthwise Brewing Company

    3 stars from bakoblue

Lengthwise definitely has good beer and most of the food I've tried is pretty tasty as well. My one caveat: They do not have air conditioning, just a swamp cooler, so when the summer temps soar this may not be the best choice to go and throw down a cold one.

  • Pho Vy

    5 stars from Motoko

Very good Vietnamese noodle soup and very fast services! I have my lunch at least twice a week.

  • Valentien

    5 stars from Motoko

This is one of my favorate place in Bakersfield! Their standard menue is always well prepared, and daily special is very creative! They have a nice selction of wines, but from time to time, I bring my special wine.

  • Foster's Donuts

    5 stars from MikeGarcia

Great donuts. open 24 hours a day. inexpensive. what more could you want? Almost every time I go the donuts are warm, straight out of the oven.

  • Yellow House Sandwich Shoppe

    3 stars from Justinian

This is a pretty good lunch place. But I too have to agree that you shouldn't go there if you're in a hurry. I had the Crabby Sams which comes on a croissant. The sandwich was pretty good. Next time I'm going to try the Tuna sandwich that comes on Indian bread. (not sure if it's naan or frybread...) The people are really nice and they've got a club card where you get a free meal after you buy a number of meals (although you have to spend at least $12 each time, which seems kinda odd for a...

  • Tahoe Joe's Famous Steak House

    4 stars from StevenLandwehr

I haven't been here lately, but every time I have been the friendly service and great food have always been consistent. My favorites are the rail road shrimp with my steak and the chicken pot pie soup. The dinner rolls are also pretty good. After dinner, who could pass up the cheese cake? Their cheese cake is my favorite...the crust is so thick and the whipped cream is just delicious!

  • BJs Restaurant & Brewery

    3 stars from lizfeld923

Great atmosphere, good service. I am not crazy about the food, but it is a great place to go to hang out with friends and grab a beer. The Pazookies are the best thing on the menu! I have stopped eating full meals there though since I haven't cared for the main meals.

  • Great Castle Chinese Restaurant

    5 stars from csubmatt

This is the best Chinese food in town hands down. PF Changs does not hold a candle to the Great Castle. I have sampled many different menu items, and I am always satisfied. Some of my favorites are the Sizzling Rice Soup, the Four Ingredient Delight (it is a delight), and anything that has the words House Special in front of it. The service is also wonderful it is family owned and operated, and they are always friendly and polite. Dinner is served family style, and be prepared to take...

  • Spencers Cafe

    4 stars from csubmatt

As far as breakfast goes Spencers in my opinion is above average. They have a good lunch and dinner too. Try the Philly Whilly cheese steak sandwich and you will be in for a treat.

  • Spencers Cafe

    2 stars from dmchenry

This place is always crowded and I can't figure out why. The breakfast is average. They serve a decent bacon and eggs, but the service always seems way busy.

  • Downtown Deli Mart

    3 stars from dmchenry

A decent place to get a quick sandwich at lunchtime. Plus they have popcorn and ice cream for dessert.

  • Back To The 50's Diner

    4 stars from dmchenry

This place has great hamburgers. They use some sort of roll as bun and grill up a mean patty. Also a great place for a milkshake.

  • Cope's Knotty Pine Cafe

    4 stars from dmchenry

Ate at this place regularly a few years back. Solid diner/grill food. The pastrami is indeed huge. I don't know anyone who could finish it. Great atmosphere too.

  • Uricchio's Trattoria

    4 stars from dmchenry

A very solid Italian joint. I usually get the lasagna or ravioli and they are always great. Especially with the meat sauce. Prices are not as bad as one might suspect. If you go during lunch, make sure you're willing to deal with a noisy and crowded dining room.

  • Taj Mahal Cuisine Of India

    5 stars from dmchenry

Never had a bad meal at the Taj Mahal. If you go, get the naan, it is awesome. The buffet isn't bad but I recommend you go for dinner and get the full experience.

  • Tahoe Joe's Famous Steak House

    4 stars from lizfeld923

It is always busy, but for a good reason. It is a warm and welcoming atmosphere with friendly staff. Make sure you have an appetite, because they serve big portions. Plan on having to wait...sometimes over an hour for a table. But while you wait, belly up the the bar and check out their railroad shrimp and a piece of cheesecake. The steak is always prepared just right!

  • Mama Roomba

    5 stars from matylda

This tiny place has character tucked into every corner. The food is outstanding - don't miss the sweet potato fries! The mojitos are well made and the staff is very good with answering questions about the menu.

  • Bite Me Cookies

    3 stars from jbaldwin

This used to be my favorite "cheap" lunch spot downtown. I always ordered the lunch special: sandwich, cookie and drink for $5. But recently, new owners took over and raised the price to $6.25! It's still affordable, but not "cheap." Also, the only cookies I order are the Dakota or the Chocolate Brownie cookie because those are the only two I have found without partially hydrogenated oil.

  • Joseph's Italian Restaurant

    4 stars from StevenLandwehr

The calzones are not only delicious and chocked full of toppings and sauce, but they are also HUGE!! Even the mini calzone is a large meal in itself. I ordered the medium calzone once and was able to eat only just over half of it.

  • Lengthwise Brewing Company

    5 stars from lizfeld923

Okay, I admit I am a regular! Great place to go for a relaxed and low key meal. Great Beer! I am wheat person myself, but I have alwyas been impressed by their house beers. For you non-beer drinkers, try out Lengthwise Root Beer or Cream Soda...fantastic! As for food favorites, they have great chicken fingers and the Deep Fried Twinkies are to die for!

  • Taqueria Los Altos

Awesome tortas!! You can almost share one!

  • Yellow House Sandwich Shoppe

    3 stars from lizfeld923

I great place to go for lunch when you aren't in a rush. I highly recommend their roast beef, especially if you like it fresh and medium rare!

  • Great Castle Chinese Restaurant

    4 stars from StevenLandwehr

I've only been here once, but the food and service were outstanding! We tried many different dishes and each one was just delicious. Every employee was very friendly and they made sure we got everything we needed.

  • Wool Growers Restaurant

    5 stars from EvelynAndreoli

We have been going to Woolgrowers for years as my children have grown and 11 grandchildren have come along. We do all our family affairs there (in the private banquet room) and we are very happy with the assistance from all of the workers as well as the owners. We just had our parents 70's Wedding Anniversary Party there and it was great...Italians as we are...we love the wine as well as the all the food. Children are always welcome. Evelyn Andreoli

  • Akira's Japanese

    3 stars from JDub

One of the best restaurants for sushi in Bakersfield. The staff is generally friendly and ready to please. I try to go here once every week. Sushi is fresh but at times they get a little skimpy on the cut. Good tempura yet is stillmiss the days of Shimura in Colonia square. They had the best tempura anywhere.

  • Flame & Skewers Mediterranean

    4 stars from JDub

This is a great place for resonable, healthy and a fast meal. I especially like the Humus and Falafel. Had the beef and chicken combo plate once, it was great but a LOT of food. This plate is perfect for two people to share. Great location and a very helpful staff. After all that healthy food you need to top it off with some Baklava. It's fantastic! It's as good if not better than Cafe Med and about half the price.

  • Great Castle Chinese Restaurant

    5 stars from steveeswenson

This is by far my favorite Chinese restaurant. Sometimes Yun-li calls me Steve and sometimes she calls me No. 6 (beef and bell peppers). Lately, I've been branching out on the menu and found other choices are also excellent. I've been going to this restaurant for 28 years.

  • El Portal

    4 stars from steveeswenson

This is one of our favorite restaurants. They have good food and service. It always feels homey in there.

  • Mc Donald's Hamburgers

    2 stars from ProgressivePete2

Mc Donalds is Mc Donalds is Mc Donalds. Nothing special. I would not recommend that anyone or anything order the chicken McNuggets. They're fried chemical balls and you will live a shorter life because of them. I do not like the drive thru at this location. The normal menuboard speaker is not in operation, so you have to remember what you want and order at a window. This is the only drive thru I've ever seen like this and it's not good. I usually go inside.

  • Traders Take-N-Bake Pizza

    5 stars from ProgressivePete2

There's not much to this place. You order a pizza, take it home and cook it yourself. The staff is very nice, and it doesn't take long for them to make your pie. The pizza is good and if you burn it, it's your own fault. Their prices are low because they don't cook the pizza, but the quality is way better than some other places that seem to focus more on advertising than quality.

  • Flame & Skewers Mediterranean

    5 stars from ProgressivePete2

Great inexpensive place to eat, whether you are a vegetarian or a carnivore. I really like their hummus! . This is a good place to try something new.
