  • Chuy's Mesquite Broiler

You really get more bang for your buck here. My favorite is the killer pork sandwich that comes with seasoned fries and cabbage salad. Don't mistake it for tradition cole slaw because it's not. I always ask for beans to substitute for the cabbage and they are awesome. The sandwich is huge, the fries plentiful, the service friendly, the atmosphere happy and relaxed. It's a little noisy at times but that adds to the experience. The beef dinner is also a great value. The last time I was...

A friend and I went there for the first time and neither of us were impressed. I had the garlic chicken sandwich and she had the regular chicken burrito. The chicken on my sandwich had no taste (certainly not garlic) and it was very dry. Once I put barbeque sauce on it it was fine but just average. No sides came with the sandwich and, with drink, it was $9.00 and change. That's a little pricey for just a sandwich lunch. The value for the cost just wasn't there. Chuy's has a much...

Besides having the best fish and chips in town and also the best clam chowder this side of Pismo their chef has some of the best dinner specials in town that no one knows about. Steaks to die for and a cajun crab stuffed salmon that will bring you to tears!!! Wonderful staff including the Best Bartender in town and the most well stocked bar in town will keep you coming back for more!!!

This is family owned by the Wangs. They are ethnic Chinese from Korea. I really enjoy the noodle soup and spicy bean curd with minced pork. They offer a free appetizer of their own "kim chee", but you have to ask for it. It is usually more peppery than hot. You can substitute proteins, ie: chicken instead of pork in the long beans entree, etc. Daughter Lisa and son John join mother "Sue" in serving while Mr. Wang usually is in the kitchen.

Pricey, and finding a parking spot can be maddening, but the pain is worth the trip. And even if you have to wait in line, you can gaze at the old photos, some of them autographed by has-been actors or athletes. Great food all around, particularly the chicken, tri-tip and potatoes, all of which have Jake's special seasoning. But the killer item is the chocolate sheet cake. Sometimes, I stop off on the way home from work and order just cake to go.

  • Andres Drive In

    3 stars from lmolen

Great burgers, but also the deep-fried burrito. Nothing special, mostly beef, cheese and potato, but it hits the spot. One of my favorite things about this place, oddly, is the goofy drive-through. It was clearly thrown together long after the building was built to meet customer demands, but I find it a fun part of the experience.

  • Happy Jacks Hamburger & Pie

    5 stars from BakersfieldJames

Happy Jack's made me the best burger I've had in years. It's cheap and wonderful, but bring cash because they don't take plastic.

Let's see...EVERYTHING IS EXCELLENT! Darin's little creation...his STINKY FRIES...are up there to a close second when it comes to garlic fries (for those of you that don't know, the stinky fries has melted gorgonzola all over them)! Also...the beer is great (my favorite is the red with a splash of wheat or lengthwiser)....I definitely give this place 5 stars!

  • Jerry's Pizza & Pub

    5 stars from ProgressivePete2

Great place to grab a cheap slice for lunch. Big slices, great prices and friendly staff. I do reccommend getting some extra napkins to mop up the grease, but it is pizza, so it's not that big of a deal. This is also a place for local bands to play their music live, but I haven't been there to see bands yet. I hear it's pretty popular with the alternative/punk crowd. Every town needs a place like Jerry's Pizza.

  • Spencers Cafe

    3 stars from ProgressivePete2

Spencers is a popular place to eat breakfast. The food is pretty good, but not consistent enough to get a really high rating. I can never remember which out of the hash browns or country potatoes I don't like, so I'm often stuck with the wrong one. My biggest complaint of all is that they have FoxNews (GOPTV) on the TVs all the time, which isn't the most pleasant thing to see in the morning. Once I was there after some terrible event and got seated under the TV. I had other customers looking...

Lengthwise has the best beer in town! I am hooked on the Centennial Ale (IPA). The decor is industrial stylish, but not pretentious. Their food is very good, but a bit expensive for those on a tight budget. The beer is reasonably priced and those wishing to pay extra can still get watered down bud light (if they have to). I really enjoy bringing home a half-gallon growler of beer to enjoy without having to drive anywhere, or better yet the ingenious party pig that keeps beer fresh for a long...

  • Wool Growers Restaurant

I was definitely unfamiliar with Basque food until some coworkers took me there. I did have the Set-up, which includes tons of food and I liked it all. I am not that adventurous so I didn't try the ox tail stew.........just did not sound appetizing to me although they tried to convince me. If you have never been here and either love basque food or have never tried it, this is the place to go! Just make sure you are hungry!

  • Pho Vy

I had a collegue of mine take me here and I was a bit nervous about trying Vietnamese food, since I am not that exotic of an eater. Boy, was I surprised! This place was great! The food was fresh and delicious. It also tasted really healthy in a good way. I would definately recommend this place if you are looking for something off the beaten path. I must admit I asked them for the least spicy thing on their menu & I started sweating after a few bites! Wow!

  • Taj Mahal Cuisine Of India

    4 stars from maryrusso

This is a great spot to go to break out of your "lunch rut." They have a great buffet with a good variety and plenty of food also for people like me that don't like too much spice. It's also somewhere, in my experience, that you can get in and out of in less than an hour.

  • El Portal

    4 stars from KATTBC

I have tried this place once and I really liked their food. Alot better than most of the mexican restaurants I have tried around town. They have good enchiladas!

  • Flame & Skewers Mediterranean

I am a big fan! the food is fresh and inexpensive. I did have to "google" a couple of menu items I was unfamiliar with.

  • Lengthwise Brewing Company

    4 stars from maryrusso

I'm not much of a beer drinker, but I would recommend this place as well. I agree that the Fish & Chips were great. I hear from friends that they have a "beer sampler" you can order that is a lot of fun & tasty.

  • Romano's Macaroni Grill

    4 stars from maryrusso

I think the funniest thing about this restaurant is the "learn italian" cds they play in the restroom. I love going here to pig out for Sunday dinner. They have a Trio Milano special which is awesome. It is a Pasta with a cream sauce, salad, and chocolate cake for $12. They also serve really good Rosemary ciabatta style bread.

  • Happy Jacks Hamburger & Pie

    5 stars from sally3501

I love Happy Jacks Hamburger and Pie. It is the best in Bakersfield. The service is super.. NO THEY DO NOT SERVE FRIES! They don't have too. If you have never eaten here- you have not lived.

Great Hamburgers and great Pie. I like the service!

  • BJs Restaurant & Brewery

    4 stars from amox

My favorite time to go here is Saturday lunchtime. The bartender will let you sample any of the homemade beers and the last time I went all I wanted to eat was two slices of whole wheat bread with some marinara sauce. The bartender complied with this odd request and I had an enjoyable couple of hours drinking, chatting, watching the massive bank of big-screen TVs and trying not to stare at all the good looking people who work there! I adore the deep, deep dish pizzas, but unless you like...

Three words here: real whipped cream. Been here many times and it is always a great experience.

  • La Mina Cantina

    5 stars from bakoblue

One of my favorite places to go. We're there once a week or so. The service is fabulous, the camerones en zarapes (could be spelled wrong...sorry) are not to be missed, and Taco Tuesday night is one of the best deals on the planet. Also, try the steak fajita salad...the steak has some incredible marinade that makes you crave more. Oh --- and don't forget the cadillac margaritas. You won't need more than two :o) Life is always good at La Mina!

  • Arizona Cafe

    5 stars from amox

The biggest compliment I can give about this place is I took an authentic Mexican in and she said it was just like home, from the chile verde served on the bone to the peeling painted pictures on the walls. The owner looks a bit grumpy, but don't let that spoil your experience. Go on a weekend morning for a chile verde breakfast washed down with a couple of Modelos. Lovely stuff.

  • Dagny's Coffee

    5 stars from bakoblue

Great locally owned coffee joint. And, if you're ever in the mood, the coffeecake is wonderful, too!

  • Rosemary's Family Creamery

    4 stars from StevenLandwehr

I can eat a lot of ice cream and this place makes it a challenge for me every time. The ice cream sundaes are really big and really good. They don't skimp on toppings, either. One of my favorites is Cousin Julie's Brownie: a huge brownie with huge scoops of vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, hot fudge, nuts, and a cherry.

  • Bagels & Blenders

Always a great place for bagels. Fast and inexpensive. Also, lots of different choices.

  • Wool Growers Restaurant

    5 stars from jasonsperber

When my wife and I were first looking to move up here, I looked up Basque food on the internet and found Wool Growers. For the longest time, this was the only restaurant we knew how to get to--but that was okay. Wool Growers served as our introduction to Bakersfield's Basque cuisine, and though we don't get over there as much as we used to, it will always hold a special place in our stomachs. This was where we were introduced to the concept of "the set-up." Mind you, this was at lunch,...

Love darts? Love beer? Then head on down to Sports and Spirits. My only beef with this place is the small size.

  • Westfair

    5 stars from CoryJenkins

This has been one of my favorite bars in town for 5 years running!! The crowd is very low-key, the drinks are cheap and the service (John the Bartender) is extraordinary!!

  • Dewar's Candy Shop

    5 stars from MikeGarcia

The service isn't special but the ice-cream is. Dewars is my favorite place to get ice-cream in town.

  • Fishlips

    5 stars from CoryJenkins

If you haven't seen Fishlip's since the re-model, please come in and do so. The fish and chips are to die for at this place..... just as good if not better than any of the coastal restaurants. The service has always been phenomenal and the martini menu seems never ending.

  • Jake's Original Tex-Mex Cafe

    4 stars from StevenLandwehr

Oh man, this place is awesome. I love the Works Burrito and the Plate of Stuff. The taco salad is also great. The beef is always so tender and juicy. And don't forget about that chocolate cake...it's soooo good.

Great food, good cake! Parking is bad but the food is worth the extra work.

  • El Pollo Loco

    4 stars from lmolen

Yeah, it's fast food, but this is cheap AND tasty. The caesar salad/tortilla soup combo isn't usually on the menu, but I've always been able to order it. It's a big salad (featuring chipotle caesar dressing and salsa), a small tortilla soup that's loaded with chicken and veggies and small drink for about $5 (that's with the easy-to-find $1 off coupons). Very cheerful staff that seems to be enjoying themselves every time I've visited.

  • Bite Me Cookies

    3 stars from scastillo

One of the few places I will go to for cookies. They have really good oatmeal cookies. Only thing I don't like about it is the hours they are open differs once in awhile. You'd have to call to make sure they don't close early.

  • Outback Steakhouse

    5 stars from scastillo

The steak here is, in my opinion, better than any other steakhouse restaurant in Bakersfield. Depending on what day of the week or time for that matter, it will always be busy..but it is definitely worth the wait.

  • Lengthwise Brewing Company

    4 stars from lmolen

I love microbrewed beer, and Lengthwise usually has five or six on tap, as well as some national brands for the less-adventuresome. The Triple Hop Red Ale is the big seller, but I like the porter as well. You can also buy fresh-brewed beer to go. As for the food, the "Stinky Fries" (loaded with garlic) are overpowering yet addictive. The sandwich menu changes periodically, but every one I've had has been good. They do offer deep fried Twinkies as well, although I haven't built up the courage...

  • Chuy's Mesquite Broiler

    3 stars from Justinian

I pulled into town late one Monday night and stopped here for dinner. It was during a football game and I sat at the bar. The food is pretty good. The fish tacos I had were filling and cheap. But the biggest surprise was that for $2.50 I got a half pitcher of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I didn't even drink it all because I had to drive home. After the game was over they pulled out one of those boards with the hole in the middle and let customers try to throw a football through the hole. It was...

  • Lengthwise Brewing Company

    5 stars from Justinian

Lengthwise offers good locally brewed beer and decent food. I'm a sucker for micro brews and fish 'n chips and both of those are pretty good at Lengthwise. The fish 'n chips batter is different than what you usually get, it's got more of a fried chicken texture, which is a nice change from the thin, slimy batter other places offer. If you don't mind eating in an industrial park setting with exposed steel and concrete (I think it adds character), Lengthwise is a pretty good bet. I hear that...

  • Bento Express

    4 stars from lmolen

The lunchtime boxes are a deal. Lots of great variety at a good price. Attentive service. The restaurant is in a spot that previously housed any number of places (sandwich shop, Mexican restaurant) that always seemed crowded. But they've done a nice job with the interior design to make a small place seem roomy.

  • Zingo's Cafe

    3 stars from lmolen

Good ol' stick-to-your ribs food. Breakfast any time of day. Down-to-earth customers and attentive service. A fantastic name. What's not to like?

  • Rosemary's Family Creamery

    5 stars from lmolen

Great value for ginormous portions of ice cream. I've been here more than a dozen times and each time I'm amazed at how large the specialty sundaes are (my favorite is the Tin Roof, but there are many great alternatives). And, sadly, despite the enormous portions, I clean my plate.

  • Happy Jacks Hamburger & Pie

    4 stars from kayflores

This is one of my favorite spots to grab a great hamburger and a piece of pie. The hamburgers always have a fresh bun and they have their secret sauce that drives you back for more. They also offer a salad with goodies that is perfect for a light lunch. The service is good also. They refill your drinks for no additional cost. Their pie crust is unique, kind of a cracker-crisp. My favorite is their peanut butter pie! The only downside is they have limited seating and parking, so go early.

  • Imperial Chinese

    3 stars from cawynne

Huge portions! Good food, cheap prices! In an old "Taco Bell" building this place is fast food chinese with a very large selection. Don't dress up to go here!

  • Baker's Square

    3 stars from cawynne

Nice place to take the kids. The food is reasonably priced, and the service is good. The pies are pretty close to Marie Callendars quality and there is usually a better selection of them here.

  • Logan's Roadhouse

    4 stars from cawynne

Noisy atmosphere. Great food. The rolls and bakery items are freshly baked on premises..yum! Good service.

  • Sizzler

    3 stars from cawynne

In between a "nice" restaurant and fast food, this location is almost always busy. The food is good, the service is mostly adequate. There are times when the waiter/waitress comes to your table once and then disappears.
