The Chicken Fried Steak is huge....like Steve said. Everything I have had here is really good. My favorite thing on the menu is the brownie with ice cream.......awesome. The atmosphere is really neat.....cool scenery with all the props for Heehaw, other TV shows and music. Karaoke night is fun and so is the night when there is a live band. Always have a great time!
Even though Filipino Americans make up one of the largest Asian American ethnic groups in the state, if not the country, and Filipinos have a long history in agriculture in this county, Filipino food has yet to "cross over" as a mainstream American ethnic food like Chinese or Japanese. It's definitely different from those cuisines and their Americanized versions, rooted as it is in the mixture of regional cuisines mixed with Chinese, Spanish and American influences from centuries of trade...
What is pho? Pronounced sort of like "fuh," it's Vietnamese beef noodle soup. It's actually a popular breakfast food in Vietnam, but me, I'll eat it whenever. I used to go to the Pho Pasteur chain in the Boston area whenever we were up there, and so I was so happy when Pho Vi opened up in Bakersfield. While there are other things on the menu (and those big plates of fried pork chops over rice look mighty tempting, and my wife likes the salads of meat over cold rice noodles, called bun),...
A great place to people watch. Something about the atmosphere makes it feel like it's actually in an Italian town where sidewalk cafes overlook pedestrian walkways with manicured landscaping. Oh, and the food is delicious as well.
Benji's French Basque Restaurant
Probably the fanciest Basque place in Bakersfield, complete with white tablecloths. Somewhat pricey, but very tasty. You can even find frog legs on the menu. (They really do resemble chicken, though more chewy.)
The food is consistently fresh and well-prepared. I like the custom salads that the server makes for you right at the table. Last time I had the grilled salmon and it was wonderful! I've always had great service there, too.
This is my favorite place for breakfast. It's usually not nearly as crowded as 24th Street Cafe -- another hot breakfast spot in the area -- but I've found them to share the same adventurousness when it comes to giving news twists on breakfast favorites. Always attentive service.
Don't let the "Pizza" in the name fool you. This is a high-class Italian restaurant that has great food, appetizers and wine. They've got a pasta and, I believe, prosciutto, dish that is really, really good. Excellent service.
I'm a huge fan of local beer -- local meaning wherever I might be eating -- and it's always fun to get the Voluptious Blonde Ale, which is brewed especially for Frugatti's. Chase that with any number of good things, like the rosemary potato chicken pizza or the tortellini, and of course the wonderful bread and olive oil.
A great place to get live music with your meal. The steak is perfectly juicy, and the atmosphere is a lot of fun.
Dagny's is a microcosm of downtown Bakersfield, better yet, a glimpse into a future in which downtown is revitalized and full of people from all parts of town patronizing local businesses and the arts. When my wife came up 4 years ago for a job interview in town, she happily stumbled upon Dagny's, and we've been regulars ever since. This is another place where everybody goes there--from all parts of town, all backgrounds and walks of life. You just grab a latte and something to eat, take a...
Their bagels are really fresh! Great place for blended coffee or smoothie.
This is old-school Bakersfield at its best. Everybody comes here, from all parts of town and all backgrounds, crowded shoulder-to-shoulder at room-length tables (and squeezing through the aisles of the adjoining Italian deli and gourmet foods shop during your wait--and there's always a wait for this lunch-only place). Decades worth of old high school and college sports photos surround you as you chow down on simple classic pasta dishes, hearty sandwiches, and, on Fridays and Saturdays, the...
Their biscuits are the best and we had the best server when we were at this restaurant for lunch one day. Never had service that good anywhere! Anything I have tried their is great. The biscuits alone I could eat for lunch and be happy!
Olive Garden Italian Restaurant
I personally love everything I have tried here. They have fresh salads, great breadsticks and their pasta is so good.
This is a fun place to go on a hot summer night and sit out on the patio with a drink. It's parking area is also a gather place for classic cars at times.
Service was good but I didn't really like what I had there. It looks like from the other reviews I should have tried their tacos.
I enjoy the dinner salad almost as much as the steak...the blue cheese dressing is so good and thick. Every cut of beef I've had here is very tender and flavorful and not over-seasoned.
This restaurant is very good and affordable. Sometimes you feel rushed but service is pretty good.
The wine list is suprisingly good, but I haven't been as impressed with the food. Sometimes, I have found this to be a bit of the "scene" in Bakersfield in the late evenings, with the Bakesfield elite & elite wannabes turning out for drinks. I have enjoyed some of the special events I have been to there- wine tastings, etc and their gourmet shop can sometimes be a good place to find gourmet ingredients or gifts for a chef friend.
When we first moved here 4 years ago, 24th St. Cafe was one of the first restaurants we found. After eating breakfast there a few times, we thought, this isn't so bad--we can almost pretend we're still in LA! That may seem like a back-handed compliment to some, but in my mind, this place does creative, fresh breakfasts better than most of the self-consciously hip or retro gourment breakfast joints in LA. In 4 years, I don't think I've sampled from the lunch menu more than a couple times,...
This is an Express version of Que Pasa, meaning you order at the counter. I have always had a great meal here at a great value. I really like their Horchata & quesadillas. I also like the fact that the service is fast and it is never overcrowded.
I really like the Outback chain, but I have never been able to get a table at our local Outback. Everytime, it is about 1-1/2 hour wait and I give up. That could also be a good sign too, but for me it is frustrating.
Great pizza and great atmosphere. I've always had good service and never waited longer than 20 minutes for a seat. I stick with the traditional cheese.
This place is the only joint in town where you can get ono local grindz--in non-pidgin, that mean delicious Hawaiian "local" food. In Hawaii, "local food" doesn't mean fussy upscale Asian-fusion or mainland-fantasy-tiki-bar: it's filling, downhome stir-fried, stewed, and grilled meats and fish dishes derived from all the different ethnic groups that worked the old plantations (from Japanese and Korean to Filipino and Portugeuse to Chinese and Native Hawaiian and more), served with two...
Ditto on Mary's comments. $2.56 is a steal of a deal for their bowls, and they have a great variety, too!
They have really great French Toast. It is also a fun place to go since has some personality and a slight vintage vibe.
This is my favorite place to go for fast cheap eats. You can get a meal for around $3! It is definately not somewhere to go for atmosphere or for the best Chinese food you have ever had, but it is great for a quick meal.
The menu offers some interesting sandwiches, but the side salad I had with mine wasn't very fresh. Not the best place to go if you're in a hurry, but the croissant my sandwich came on was worth the wait.
Everything I have had here has been great, but my favorite is the Deluxe Grilled Cheese. My only criticism would be that their is not enough seating, so I would either try to miss the lunch rush, or plan to get your food to go.
A cozy corner sandwich shop that offers good salads as well. Small, but with a variety of seating options, including a counter by the window that's good for people- and traffic-watching.
Even though it is located at a gas station, this is a great deli and market when you want to grab lunch in the marketplace area. The food is great and their is indoor & outdoor seating with more atmosphere than you'd expect. It's great too since there is also a Smith's bakery in the market, so you can also pick up a sweet treat.
This is one of the places I like to go to spontaneously on a Saturday night when you have to wait an hour to eat anywhere else. It's intimate in size, but you can always go in and find seating. The food is good and it's a good value. The also have a really wild collection of surrealistic paintings.
I like their food and they give everyone a little dessert to go with your meal. Good service!
This is a classic Bakersfield restaurant! I enjoyed all of the old photographs up on the walls of Bakersfield. The most unexpected part of the dining experience for me was the massage I received from the waitress. I would not call the food true Italian, but more of a Basque/Italian mix. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND their market attached to the restaurant. For any local "foodies," it is one of the only places I have found to get some more unique & high quality ingredients. I know they also do...
I loved their food. After about 10 pm, it is so packed you can't even move-literally! Usually has a younger crowd after the dinner crowd.
They are good but service leaves something to be desired sometimes.
Their breakfast is really good and it is served all day!
Good food! Good service! Great place to go while shopping in the mall!
Love their food! You have to try this one!
They have a good sandwich but my favorite is the Banana Pudding.....that is awesome!
Tons of food and fast service. Most of the stuff is not bad.
I like this place. It is usually not as busy as some of the other coffee shops in town but I like most of what I have had here.
Everything that I have tried here has been good. They also have good unique drinks. They are really affordable and have a good atmosphere.
Great food- the crab cakes are wonderful. The service is average.
This is my favorite restaurant
Love this restaurant, very good service. They do need to expand as there is usually a wait.
Absolutely outstanding restaurant. I can't get enough of just about everything they have here, but my all-time favorite is the ox tail stew. Ask for more of anything and they'll bring it out to you.
This more of a "place to be seen" than a "place to chill" kind of bar. Most people are pretty dressed up and it's usually absurdly packed.
The Dutch crust bread is delicious alternative to your standard sandwich breads. At first I was a bit apprehensive of getting a pastrami sandwich on the Dutch crust, but the way they make it with the melted cheese is awesome.
