I love to get their chicken melt. The food is consistantly good but they are a little slow when it comes to service sometimes. It's worth the wait though!

The pumpkin pancakes are the best and go well with a mimosa! The service is great, and the menu
is outstanding. You can't get better than this!

I, along with a usual crowd, am a downtown worker and went to sequoia every day for lunch. I think the food, atmosphere, and service is great. I especially love the french dip, and the delux grilled cheese.

The only downfall is the price...I mean come on, a french dip sandwich and a drink shouldnt cost like $9 bucks. But...they are obviously doing well cause its always packed and people love it.

I ordered Elvira's combo plate. It seems the potato salad and cole slaw are packaged and come from a grocery store. And what an embarrassment to say you offer Pyrenees bread and the bread you gave me was a packaged sandwich roll. Not Pyrenees.

OK, to the meat. The chicken was the best of the group. It was the only part that tasted fresh. The turkey was like it came from a stew. It had a good flavor, but was covered with a clear liguid. I know turkey can be juicy, but that was a bit much. I have never had tri tip covered with BBQ sauce, but I am glad it was. It needed the help as well as the ribs. The sauce was ok. Nothing great...

I have eaten here many times and have never had a bad meal here. Went Saturday afternoon and had a wonderful meal. The guacamole is made at your table and it is some of the best in town. I ate the seafood burrito. Somtimes, it is stuffed with seafood. Othertimes, it is a bit skimpy. Today was a bit skimpy, but the flavor was very, very good.

Waited for Friday, so I could have the prime rib. I got there at 5, just when it started being offered. I asked for the "end cut" and was told they were out. How could they be out? There might have been 5 other people eating and I know they didn't get the end cut prime rib. So I got a regular cut. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It had sort of a boiled taste. I love their steaks, but I will pass on the prime rib in the future. The only seasoning it had was the salt I put on it.

Get the shrimp fajitas or the Enchiladas California!

The service is good and they have $10.00 pitchers of margaritas! (One shot of Patron is $7.00 though).

It is usually hot in there in the summer. They claim they have all the a/c's on, but it doesn't feel like it.

Super friendly employees (ask to sit in Jeremy's section-he can foresee your needs without asking).
Food was fairly priced and good!
You WILL get full!

Go during the week if you don't want to wait as long and if you go during the weekend, wait in the bar with a drink before they page you.

They aren't stingy with the a/c like some other places in Bakersfield.

The BEST chinese food I have ever eaten!
Go with all of your friends so you can sample more stuff! It is served family style and everyone can share.
I recommend the walnut shrimp, shrimp and snowpeas, tangerine beef... well, just everything!

The owner always calls me by name. I don't know how she knows my name...I only discovered this place this year and don't know how I missed it since I've lived in Bakersfield my entire life!

Ask for chopsticks just to feel authentic and get the margarita's, they taste like they use Patron-smooth...

I've lived here all my life but have travelled all over and honestly, this is the best chinese food.
Don't be intimidated by their location (like I was), it is safe.

And as for the person who was grossed out by the fish tank, just don't look at it-restaurants with those big ol orange fish are not appetizing to me either, so I just don't look.

When they 1st opened it was popular steak house prices, but without the atmosphere, the food was cold and the crackers...We went there this weekend (7-07)and it was great! Huge portions that weren't cold, a full bar now, but, there was still crackers instead of bread.. for this price, we are starving, they should offer bread or chips or something before dinner.
They have live bands, a jukebox, pool tables, arcade games and that's just the bar.
It has come a LONG way and I really hope they stick it out and make it!

With all of the new sushi places popping up around town, Akira's is still consistently putting out great food and keeps me coming back for more. Good food for lunch or diner... entertaining atmosphere (although sometimes a little hot in the summer)... and service always with a smile.
Skip all of the newbies and stay with this Bakersfield original. Love the Las Vegas roll & the Spider... but plain old spicy California hits the spot too.

Service - always very knowledgeable about their food and always with a smile. Food - I'll say it again... the best in Bakersfield.

This is a great place for great food for very reasonable prices. Just remember it's a student-run operation, so all of the servers are new to their jobs. However, they are very eager to please. Make sure to make reservations, as it fills up quickly.

My wife and I have eaten here twice now. The first time was so good, she suggested we go back later that same day. It was a late lunch so we split the Greek flat bread pizza and a piece of carrot cake for dessert. Both were excellent. They had a lot of people working and the owners were hovering behind the counter.
The second time, a couple of days later the service was a little distracted and owners were not seen and the exact same pizza was not as good too much pesto sauce, not enough feta and missing the black olives. The carrot cake is the pre-purchased kind so it was as good as before.
They have a diverse and healthy looking menu. We will go back for sure. This time we'll try something different.

Whoa Doctor! Have you ever had the opportunity of going to an all you can eat pizza buffet and then having the challenge of fighting for a slice with other customers? No? Well i have at 5 star because they only bring out 1 pizza for every one to "fill up" on. Then when that pizza is gone, you have to wait about 10 minutes for another pizza to be made. A lunch hour has passed and you walk out of there with 3 pieces of stale pizza in your gut. As for their other "options" imagine the leftovers a day after the superbowl. Old looking chicken wings, scabby potato wedges that could be used as a doorstop, and the intricacies of their salad bar that consists of lettuce, dressing and crouton. Not to mention the place looks like every liquor store you have ever been in. The 5 stars in the name must be representation of every time they cleaned the sticky off the tables-that I hope is from the pizza.

I ate here on the 4th for lunch and it was great! They have SO many choices including wraps, pizzas, sandwiches, panini's, salads, smoothies, coffee, and desserts. They also serve alcohol, beer and wine I believe.

We ordered a Napa Valley Chicken Panini, a Chicken California Wrap, and a Peach Smoothie for about $18 total. The meal was way worth the price, everything was fresh and tasty - also including chips on the side. I would compare the prices to Sequoia, but Camille's has a lot more variety. I'm looking forward to trying their pizzas and salads, they looked delicious!

Due to the popularity of this place, sometime, we waited as much as 30 minutes before seated, but when our foods came, it was always worth the wait.
Last night, I went there with my girlfriend, and they had live DJ playing excellent selection of music, and we had a blast.
I strongly recommand this place to anyone who loves excellent sushi, friendly service at great atmosphere.

The first time I ate at Camille's Sidewalk Cafe, I had their Italian Roast Beef Panini. It was served on an italian bread (foaccia?) with provolone cheese and italian roast beef. The bread was moist and great tasting! Meals also come with chips. However, their key lime pie wasn't quite as good as it looked, but it was still good. Also, the restaurant is nice inside, with flowers at every table. Also, the cashier that served us, she was very nice.

I've also had the Rustic Italian Pizza and the Napa Valley Chicken panini. Both are very good, even though the Rustic Italian Pizza had less meat than what I desire (I like meat on my pizza, not vegetables).

However, my favorite is the Zorba the Greek pizza without the red bellpeppers and onions (I don't like those) with FRESH Parmesan cheese.

I HIGHLY recommend this new business to anyone who hasn't tried it! Its a nice hidden gem in the Northwest on Coffee Road.

I have had problems getting my order right. I go to the location on Union Ave. and the service and food are good, but several years ago I had a very scary experience at the Oswell location. The people behind the counter were talking about poisoning all the white people who came in that day. They didn't realize that I could understand everything they were saying (in Spanish). I haven't been back since.

I once thought it was made of goat intestines but i hear it is made of some type of peas. Whether it be Goat or peas, it is great in addition to many of the other items on the menu. The desserts are a bit lacking and the bathrooms are bit undersized, which is problem for a fellow my size, but everything else has zing in it and it really stands out. It is a bit more than your value menu meal but it is worth the price.

This is one of the great locally-owned restaurants in town. The hot sandwiches were toasted long before that Q place came along. All the ingredients are fresh, and they make your sandwich to order quickly, even during a crowded lunch hour. When I worked on the east side, we went there once a week, and after about three visits they knew my name and my usual order. That really helped when we had only half an hour for lunch. Sometimes the line was out the door, but we still got in, got fed and got back to work on time.

One diversity note: They carry Pepsi products from the tap, but they also had a bottled brand of sodas that added to the experience: orange, vanilla cream, strawberry...I like the options.

I love the Casa, but it is not a restaurant, it's a bar. I go there frequently, and never have I seen them serve food, not even beer nuts on the bar. It is mislabeled here as a Mexican place. Maybe the employees will bring in Taco Bell for their breaks, but they don't serve it to the customers!

Baskin Robbins is great ice cream, minus the bells and whistles of a Coldstone experience. You can count on them for classic flavors and new experimental flavors, on a cone or in a cup. Their sundaes are excellent, if not as large as some. Their prices are higher than grocery store gallons, but then the grocery store gallon isn't served for you on a delicious sugar cone. I actually prefer BR ice cream to CS, because the stir-ins, like the cookies in Cookie & Cream, are blended more into the ice cream, and the ice cream takes on more of the cookie flavor. On Tuesdays, they have dollar scoop night, and that's a deal in any universe.

I love Jake's Pit Beef. Sandwiches, frito boats, taco salads...you can put it on anything and you have a sensational meal! I like that they will prepare your dish any way you like it, so picky eaters can off the tomatoes or onions or whatever. Also, it seesm like healthier fare than a typical burger joint, fresher, too. And, of course, the cake can shoot you straight to culinary heaven.

I deducted a star because the parking is not just a nuisance, it's a real hardship, especially if you are disabled. They have one handicapped spot, and if it's taken, wheelchair folk hafta park miles away like everyone else. I hate to be the one to say it, but the parking problem can make me skip Jakes for something less fabulous. A location with better parking would be quite a customer service.

I was in a party of 12 and when the group was halfway done, they finally brought out my dinner. Supposedly they were waiting on the fries, which about 1/2 the restaurant was eating, so it wasn't like I had ordered something odd. I was so annoyed, my party felt guilty about chowing down without me. Francisca never asked about refills for 1/2 of us, and I told her I was disappointed that my meal came too late to enjoy. As we gathered our purses to leave, she lamely offered a dessert. It wouldn't go with the nails I was ready to spit, so I declined. We won't be going back there. Everyone can have a bad night, but she didn't try and make things right. I actually could have had the turkey cobb first and waited for the fries. She/they blew it.

Manny's Tam O' Shanter

Wanting to try a foreign cuisine I haven't had before, I went to Tam O'Shanter at someone's suggestion. They told me it was Scottish. Never having Scottish cuisine, I became excited like a child going to Disneyland.

The building itself, located on the East side, is unique with its own charm. Tam O'Shanter's Liquor store is also across the street. It too had a certain charm about it adding to the charm of the restaurant.

Upon walking in you notice the semi-old-world feel with wall-to-wall wood and brick. Having arrived for early lunch, we were the only ones there. Manny, the non-Scottish owner, seated us and was very hospitable. I couldn't help but think I was dining in a restaurant in New York were the restaurant owners add a personal touch by playing host and engaging the customers in conversation; I like Manny.

Our waitress presented the menu along with the lunch specials. The lunch special consisted of nothing more than traditional sandwiches with fries or salad. Forget sandwiches, I was there for a taste of Scotland. I immediately dismissed the specials and opened up the menu and soon became disappointed. The menu did not consist of mostly Scottish fare but a mix of Irish and steakhouse menu items. Now, that is not to take away from the quality of food but I expected more.

I ordered something I’ve never had, Bangers and Mash, a traditional IRISH dish at $20. Others in my party had the Grilled Corn Beef ($20) and the Pan Seared Lamb Chops ($40).

While waiting for our meal we were served bread with colored butter. It was not flavored as I would have expected from a colored butter. Apparently, bread is only served with the meal in the evening time. I guess we were the exception. However, we were served bread after someone in our group ordered the stuffed pastries at a whopping $14.95 for 4 small pieces. She was a little disappointed.

During this wait for the meal, I took some time to explore the restaurant on the way to the men’s room. It is much larger than it appears. In the back is Club Tam, a bar where they have nightlife on Friday’s and Saturday’s. From what the menu says, it appears it is geared towards an older crowd – no problem.

After a somewhat long patient wait, we were served. I received mine. It looked to be nothing special but what can you expect of a traditional Irish dish? While the lamb chops did appear to be presented well, I would not pay $40 for lamb chops. The Grilled Corn Beef was in HEAVY portion with a side of mash and one-quarter cut cabbage. While I did not try the corn beef, the person that had said it was the best they’ve had outside of Washington D.C.

My Bangers and Mash was good. The 2 medium sized sausages were lightly seasoned. I started to taste the seasoning towards the end and enjoyed it. The mashed potatoes were okay and were topped with regular beef gravy. Again, I would say this dish does not warrant such a heavy price tag of $20 for mashed potatoes and sausage. It wasn’t until I left that I realized I was not given the leeks that come with the entrée – too late.

Manny came over to the table at the end of the meal and played good host as he had done with other tables that were seated after us. He definitely gave it a personal feel. I got the sense Manny spends a lot of time at the restaurant and puts his heart into it.

While I would again visit, it would only be once more for dinner to check out the night feel. This place would be good for a first date. It has ambience along with charm and a friendly host. Do you have to absolutely try this restaurant? No. But, if you want something different, this might be the place for you. You should expect to fork out over a hundred dollars on date. It’s not a restaurant for lunch and this probably hurts business. It being out of the way doesn’t help either. I would love to see this concept elsewhere in town with an affordable menu and a focus on Scottish fare as the name Tam O'Shanter implies. I had trouble reviewing the site because of this.

Since they opened their first location here, I have not received a correct to-go order! I have tried different locations over the years and none of them have impressed me with their service. Eating in their restaurants wasn't too bad until about four months ago when my family and I decided to dine at the Union location. When we went in, it smelled like sewage and the dining room was a mess! Guests were leaving and the employees acted like nothing was wrong! I have decided to not ever again subject my family to a restaurant with such low standards of what is considered good service and what is sanitary.
