Some of you are old enough to remember mailing in cereal box tops with a dime, fifteen cents or a quarter for fascinating items like various toys, amulets, and rings advertised to have glorious properties for fun and excitement. And you may recall our comic books of the time had pages of advertising in them to excite the imagination of children and entice them by promises of wonderful things to be had cheaply. Shortly after WWII one company advertised an “Atomic Bomb” ring for children guaranteed to display actual atoms flying about, and following the admonition by advertisers “Be the first kid on your block” I immediately sent off for one. The ring was mounted with a tiny “bomb” about three-sixteenths of an inch in diameter and about five-eighths of an inch long. The bomb was gold colored with a detachable red tailfin.
