Bakersfield City Councilman David Couch and his anti-illegal immigration proposals raised a big ruckus at Wednesday night's council meeting. It was quite the show, what with all that weeping and gnashing of teeth; all that wide-eyed fear and trepidation. And that was just the council. The standing-room only crowd was every bit as passionate and just as divided. None of which could possibly have surprised Couch, who surely knew the stink he'd raise by daring to suggest that the council declare English the official language of Bakersfield; that the city should not become a sanctuary for illegal immigrants; and that perhaps there might be a city service or two that local illegals shouldn't be getting. Surely he predicted the angry reaction from the pro-illegal immigration crowd, most of whom characterized Couch's proposals as racist, divisive and an assault on human rights. So why did he do it?
