Q: In the mid-1990's, there was a construction project slated for the southwest area of town, just southeast of Highway 99 and Panama Lane. I believe it was called the Grand Canal. During the publicity of this project, several children were afforded an opportunity to make decorative tiles that would be used for this project. There was a fee for the artistic works of the children. I believe the tiles were painted and decorated at a local museum in Bakersfield. Well, the construction project fell through. What ever happened to the tiles? — Sam Vagle A: According to Richard Hall at Westminster Ceramics, the 10,000-or-so tiles were fired at the ceramics shop in Bakersfield for future use. He believes they are still there, on a couple of 4-foot palettes, though he hasn’t seen them in about 18 months. “We wouldn’t have given them away because they don’t belong to us,” Hall said.
