It's been a couple of days, but I'm still not clear how the illegal immigration resolution approved by the City Council Wednesday is radically different from those proposed by Councilman David Couch . A few months ago, Couch called for resolutions making English the official language of Bakersfield and declaring the city would not become a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. Considering that English is already the official language of California and illegal immigration is, after all, illegal, Couch's resolutions seemed fairly straightforward. Where does Bakersfield stand on the issue of illegal immigration? But that kind of straight talk proved too harsh for a number of local folks who have demonized Couch and characterized his resolutions as hateful, divisive and racist. In what has got to be the reigning over-the-top slur of the entire controversy, United Farm Workers of America co-founder Dolores Huerta on Wednesday even compared the councilman's resolutions to the nooses...
