Q: Is there something that can be sprayed on a cactus to kill scale? — Mary Jane Harvey Unfortunately, there is nothing on the market for killing scale insects on cacti. Vonne Zdenek, president of the Bakersfield Cactus and Succulent Society, said one option is to take a Q-tip and rub each individual scale with rubbing alcohol. “Make sure you get what’s underneath (the hard outer coating). The eggs are microscopic,” Zdenek added. Repeat this process in a couple of weeks in case any eggs have hatched. Another option is to spray the plant with soapy water. If the problem persists, you may have to throw away the plant. The cactus society meetings are a good place to ask seasoned growers like Zdenek questions like this. The group meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month at Olive Drive Church, 5500 Olive Drive.
