Teachers who participated in my informal survey on school apathy, the results of which ran in my Saturday column, cited too many tests and too few parents as the cause. Those who wrote or called in are men and women who work at elementary, junior high and high schools throughout the county. They were a diverse bunch, but when it came to student apathy -- its cause and its cure -- they were nearly unanimous. Standards are necessary, they said. Just make them realistic. Yes, we do get paid to teach your children, they said. But teaching kids whose parents don't value education is an arduous task. The teachers said they generally appreciate the lofty goals of the No Child Left Behind Act, the federal law requiring that 100 percent of students score proficient or higher in math and English by 2014.
