Bickering between Huntington Beach and Santa Cruz has taken an ugly twist, leaving many onlookers wondering: Don’t these folks have something better to do? The dispute is over which city can market itself “Surf City, USA.” Huntington Beach wants to claim the title, contending surfing in California began in 1910 in the city. Santa Cruz claims its surfing history dates back to 1885, when three Hawaiian princes used redwood boards to surf at the mouth of the San Lorenzo River. Besides, Santa Cruz officials note the waves in their city are bigger and better than in Huntington Beach. Santa Cruz also claims the invention of the wetsuit and surf board leash. Last year, a Northern California lawmaker tried to get the Legislature to pass a resolution giving the “Surf City” crown to Santa Cruz. A Huntington Beach lawmaker blocked the effort.
