Apparently, you don't need to swallow water to drown.
Officials are doing an autopsy on 17-year-old Sarah Foster, who they say drowned last night at a house on 3013 Hollins St. Her parents came home, couldn't find her, but eventually found her at the bottom of the pool.
Police and coroner's officials say there's no indication anything else happened except that she drowned. But the coroner's office still has to do microscopic testing to determine the exact cause.
She could have dry drowned, but it's not likely, said John Van Rensselaer, supervising deputy coroner. It's when a death occurs due to lack of oxygen or cardiac arrest, according to eHow.
The phenomenon was highlighted a few months ago when a 10-year-old from South Carolina "drowned" an hour after being out of the pool.
