I took a scuba diving class at Mt Sac and there were four swim tests you had to take before the teacher would let you in. One was swimming the width of the pool underwater. I was second in line next to a noisy drain. The teacher was giving us first two instructions, but we couldn't hear him. He would drop his hand and we would go - we could see that by his gestures and did so. My lungs were bursting when I got to the other side. The teacher looked back at me, puzzled, and then I realized I had gone an extra 20 feet unnecessarily.
One of the other tests was swimming the width of the pool twice with a 15 pound weight belt. Like you, I had no body fat and sunk like a stone on the return lap, jettisoning the belt to live another day. You could still take the scuba diving class if you took the coach's swimming class, so I did that. This was during the first gas "crisis" in the 70s, so the pool wasn't heated - brrrr! The hot shower afterward...
