Montfred, from my perspective there are some key factors that have led to John Edwards disappointing results in New Hampshire, Nevada, and potentially in South Carolina.  The media treats our elections of government officials simply as horse races. Who's ahead? Who's winning? Who's losing? Why? There is a recent article on Salon.com that talks about polls and the horse race mentality of the day. Poll questions tell you more about the actual poll and who is running it than poll results actually measure today. Tracking who is ahead on any day from poll responses simply is the most convenient and cost effective method for a national media, short on actual reporters, to cover this type of event.  Issues become annoying filler which might have complex answers that take longer than is commercially allowed to articulate and will leave no lasting impression on the hand that holds the remote control.
