The bottom line is that even if your son had immediately told the truth, it wouldn't have saved Zane's life, given how quickly "breathing dirt" would have killed him.    That being said, I would encourage you in the strongest possible terms to go through with your plan to get counseling for your son. We don't need two victims here.    I am glad you are talking to Zane's family. This is a very sad tragedy that stems from adventuresome boys being adventuresome boys. Lord knows, I've done lots of things in my youth that could have wound up tragically, but somehow didn't.   I hope your family finds peace and understanding.
