Interesting thoughts, Sam; some of them daring. I view the worth of myths and legends in the same way that I view gems and precious metals: the meaning that they give to us and the insights that they can jar loose. Until the age of advanced electronics, gold had very little real use beyond dental fillings.  We prized gold, and drove up its price solely on the meaning that we gave to it: possessing and displaying gold made us feel unusually good.  Diamonds and other gemstones, only slightly more useful, are prized by our species for the same reasons.  And of course, we add to all of these an arbitrary yet traditional message of status. I have wondered about the possibility of "children of light" and "children of darkness."  There are undoubtedly some individuals who seek light and others who seek darkness, but I always reserve the hope that children of darkness can renouce their metaphorical parents in the same way...
