The evidence against him was strong, but circumstantial. On the other hand, the "misconduct" by the DA's office was ridiculous. He said something he shouldn't have, there were objections, and he very clearly corrected himself. He didn't mean to say it, and it didn't affect the jury in any way. The DA isn't the bad guy here. Also, the original trial was quite a bit longer than one day, and so if some of the original witnesses weren't called, it is completely understandable that he was found not guilty.
