Schuster has covered a 2 a.m. mall opening the day after Thanksgiving, dressed up as a refinery worker complete with hard hat and goggles for a refinery tour and spent a day shopping for finds at a swap meet for a story. All in a day’s work for a business and sometimes entertainment reporter. Schuster covers the retail industry, which includes shopping and restaurants, for The Bakersfield Californian.  In addition, he has covered agriculture, oil and the economy as a business writer since 2005.  He also enjoys singing along (badly) to songs on the car radio. Schuster previously worked as a sports writer at The Californian, starting in 1999.  His 2004 profile of Bakersfield native and NFL quarterback David Carr won first-place honors for Sports feature writing from the California Newspaper Publishers Association.
