Hi everyone,

My name is Olivia Garcia, and I am the Mananging Editor of MAS Magazine, Bakotopia.com magazine, the Northwest Voice and Southwest Voice.

They are all publishde under one roof called Mercado Nuevo, a subsidiary of The Bakersfield Californian.






Our staff is pretty young, entrepreneurial and full of energy! I love working with our diverse team.

But The Bakersfield Californian is where I fell in love with the business. In fact, my interest in journalism started in high school when I used to freelance/intern for The Californian.

I interned at the Fresno Bee, San Jose Mercury News and the Riverside Press-Enterprise. Then about 10 years ago, I returned home to work as a full-time reporter for The Bakersfield Californian. A few years ago, I took on a bigger challenge and joined The Californian's newly formed subsidiary, Mercado Nuevo.

That was a LONG time ago but we don't need to go into dates :-)

More about me:

I am married to a hard-working law enforcement officer. We have three sons. Our youngest just turned three months old. We have three beautiful German Shepherds, all girls.

I teach journalism part time.

My free time is spent with mi familia, running, downloading the 700th song on to my iPod and staying involved in the community.

I sit on different community boards, including the Kern County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the Central Valley chapter of the California Chicano News Media Assoc.
