Dan is testing out Printcasting at http://beta.printcasting.com.

About Dan

Hello! I'm an online product manager who specializes in social media, which is the idea that average people can and should do more than just consume media, but also produce and participate in it. I have 14 years of experience in this area at The Washington Post, Knight Ridder Tribune, America Online, and now The Bakersfield Californian, where I have worked since 2004.

I started a little site called Bakotopia.com that you may be familiar with, and later we evolved that into a technology platform called Bakomatic which runs community features on this site and many others focused on Bakersfield. Bakomatic also runs large parts of AZCentral.com and Amp.az in Phoenix, Arizona.

Today I'm managing our Printcasting initiative, a two-year project that is generously funded by the John S. and James L Knight Foundation (via the Knight News Challenge) and The Bakersfield Californian. Printcasting will democratize print production so that it's as easy an inexpensive to publish a magazine as it is to start a blog. It will also create a new local media ecosystem that allows any blogger's content to be used in print in exchange for potential revenue share from successful Printcasts. We plan to launch Printcasting in March 2009. If you would like to follow our progress and help alpha and beta test, I hope you will join us at http://www.printcasting.com.

A fun fact about me: while I spend a lot of time in Bakersfield, from the very beginning I have worked out of my home office in Broomfield, Colorado (no kidding!) Back in 2004 this was considered a little strange, but now I think it's seen as just another footnote about the increasingly global, networked economy.  It also speaks to the power of technology, which allows communities and companies -- even locally focused ones like the Californian -- to transcend geography.
