About Shellie
Shellie Branco covers the Bakersfield entertainment scene. Previously, she wrote about northeast neighborhoods and higher education, with the occasional obit thrown in. Branco was born and raised in Visalia. She interned with The Californian in 2003 and returned in October 2005. She attended the University of Southern California, earning bachelor's degrees in print journalism and cultural anthropology. She also earned at USC her master's degree in professional writing with a focus on screenwriting. She served as a student editor for the USC Annenberg Online Journalism Review, an online magazine for new media. Branco later served as managing editor for its sister Web site, Japan Media Review, which covers trends in Japanese media technology and how they impact journalism. She helped The Associated Press with elections coverage and interned at Los Angeles-area newspapers. Branco likes the 18th century, foreign films, smart TV shows, coffeehouses and annoying laundry lists. She finds writing in the third person awkward and obnoxious, yet these things must be done. She's anxious to meet the kit foxes that eluded her when she reported about them at Bakersfield College. They seem more loveable than her cat, who gives most of his affection to dairy products. (Note: She eventually met the kit foxes. Then her cat died. Now every animal she meets pales in comparison to him.)
