Kern County vocalists are gearing up for a promising 2010 Karaoke Showdown

Kern County vocalists are gearing up for a promising 2010 Karaoke Showdown. So far, nine (9) locations are participating in the “Road to the Fair 2010″ competition, which will award over $40,000 in cash and prizes. Every participating location has a weekly competition to name a top male and female for their Semi-Finals in August. These semifinalists will battle it out to determine who will move on to the Finals at Kern County Fair September 27th. In the end, 20 people (or more, depending on the addition of new locations) will take the Frontier Stage to vie for the titles of Male and Female Vocalist of the Year.

Karaoke … It’s A Family Affair

The fourth annual “Road to the Fair” Karaoke Contest kicked off with a bang Tuesday night at Le Corusse Rouge, but it was far from typical. The singers ranged in age from 14 to senior citizen; with music selections spanning the genres of classic rock, country, contemporary, pop and gospel. The musical talent was the best yet according to event organizers. “This reminds me of the first and fourth seasons of American Idol” said Kyle Brown of Good Time Entertainment, who founded the event in 2007, “every year the talent improves and you’re left wondering how in the world it could get any better!”.

In all, thirteen competitors took the stage hoping to become the next Kern County Vocalist of the Year in the first of eight nightly contests to be held in and around Bakersfield this week. After a very close race, Ross Vercammen won for the men with a soulful and touching rendition of Vince Gil’s “Go Rest High On That Mountain” dedicated to his Grandmother, who was in the audience. Valerie “Tink” MacCabe defeated her female competitors with a spot-on performance of No Doubt’s “Bathwater”, made even better by her Stefani-like outfit and dance moves. All of the contestants, even those that hadn’t known about the contest until the last minute, gave great performances, resulting in a difficult decision process for the three judges.

Perhaps most remarkable was the diverse, enthusiastic audience. Le Corusse Rouge, an open-age venue, welcomed entire families who came out to cheer on sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, cousins, mothers and grandchildren. Looking around the crowded room, you couldn’t help but notice the baby happily watching from his mother’s lap; the whoops and whistles from the Smith/Esquivel family as three of them vied for the titles; and the cell phones held by mothers, fathers and managers, all eagerly recording performances for later review.

The “Road to the Fair” continues for the next five weeks at Cataldo’s Pizza on Niles, Ironhorse Saloon, Le Corusse Rouge, Tomi’s Cowgirl Café, Lone Oak Saloon, Rocket Shop Café and Rockwell’s Trout’s. The Old River Monte Carlo starts its contest July 22nd, and other locations may be added next week. Best in the West Road to the Fair Karaoke Contest

Karaoke singers across the county are gearing up for the 4rd Annual Road to the Fair Karaoke Contest, where ultimately $40,000 in cash and prizes will be distributed.

Several individual locations will start contests the week of July 6th, continuing for six (6) weeks to determine the finalists competing in the Kern County Fair Karaoke Showdown September 27th.

At the Showdown, contestants will vie for the titles of Male and Female Vocalists of the Year, winning a $500 check from Kern County Fair plus $750 in the latest karaoke music.

The contest is open to all ages, but restrictions may apply depending upon the locations. Locations to date include:

How to Win A Halloween Costume Contest

Halloween is just around the corner, and the search is on for that perfect Halloween Costume. Whether you're entertaining, attending a party or just trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, the perfect costume is paramount for a successful Halloween. We've scoured our resources and developed this list of tips on designing a Halloween look sure to sway the judges of any respectable Costume Contest in your favor.

Tip #1 - Start with 3 or more costume ideas.
Challenging yourself to thinking of at least 3 possible costumes will result in greater creativity. The first costume idea may have some drawbacks in the final analysis. For example, a sword looks great for a Saimiri warrior, but don't count on being able to get into your local nightclub with it; and if you aren't already a belly-dancer, there's hardly time at this point to take belly-dancing lessons. Expand the original ideas with accessories, makeup and other ways you'll truly be able to stay in character.

Tip #2 - Stay away from "stock" costumes to create your own unique look.
A costume shop or variety store is a great place to get ideas, or even create a base for your final costume, but you won't win any contests by being the 100th replica of Cat Woman. The costumes available at party stores also tend to be on the flimsy side, which could result in a “wardrobe malfunction” moment. Instead, try to couple the ideas from the store with your own twists (and perhaps a layer of real clothing) to be truly unique.

Tip #3 - Avoid the obscure.
Try to keep your costume mainstream enough that most people will "get it" and understand who you're trying to be. Either stay with what's popular now, or what has proven to be timeless, Dracula, for example. Avoid characters so little known you'll have to spend the night explaining yourself.

Tip #4 - Use popular culture to your advantage, if you dare.
Tried and true Halloween rules are that funnier the costume, the easier it is to win the contest; and nothing is funnier than a joke at someone else's expense. If you're going to use a popular culture jab as your costume base, just be sure that the news is relatively current so everyone gets the joke. For example, a pee soaked David Hasselhoff is current; but the Hoff accompanied by Kit is outdated (at least until the new series picks up). Also be ready to take the bad with the good, some people may appreciate your humor more than others.

Tip #5 - Play up your best points by picking a costume that fits your personality and your body.
Let's face it, not everyone can pull off a stripper or a Charlie Chaplin. Pick a costume that accents your strong points. Do you have great legs? Are you funny? Has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like a celebrity? Can you make little kids cry with your evil laugh? Stay away from anything that makes you feel uncomfortable when you're in character; to win a contest you'll have to act continuously like whoever (or whatever) inspired you.

Tip #6 - Couples only.
This tip is for couples attending a function together: being his-and-hers and original is almost impossible. Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Two Peas in a Pod, zzzz. It's easier to be creative by coming up with your own unique ideas and leave the contest judges to figuring out who you came with.

Tip #7 - More is more - dress from head to foot and accessorize.
No winning costume is complete without the extra touches. Make sure every inch of your costume is in character from your shoes to your hat, and accessorize with props and makeup. Maximize your look by keeping in character with your speech and mannerisms; act as if you're on a stage the entire time you're wearing that costume (unless you're scaring small children, then it's okay to become human for a moment).

Tip #8 - Last but not least
Run your final costume by at least 5 trusted friends before the big night. We all love our mothers, but they may not be impartial enough to give great costume advice. When you think you're ready, show your costume to five trusted friends who will give you their real opinions. If you have to explain what you are to any one of them, start over at Tip #1.

A Christmas Wedding: Christmas as it Should Be... Happily-Ever-After!

The Annual Downtown Christmas Parade will take on a special meaning for one lucky couple, who were selected as the winners of this year's Christmas Parade Wedding. Crystal Rustman and Roger Towns will tie the knot in front of thousands of witnesses aboard the Kern County Bridal Association's Christmas Parade Float live on Thursday night.

The Association, comprised of local wedding businesses, sponsors the entire wedding at no cost to the bride and groom (with the exception of their marriage license). After the live wedding atop the parade float, the couple and fifty of their closest friends and family will enjoy a private cake and punch reception. "This is the third year we've done the Christmas Parade Wedding", said Kern County Bridal Association founder Kyle Brown, "and we're more excited than ever for this year's winners! All of our members, even those who aren't directly involved as sponsors, love this event. It's a way for us to give back the community by helping one couple have a wedding they might not otherwise be able to afford in today's economy.

How to Win A Halloween Costume Contest

With Halloween right around the corner, costumes are on every ones mind right now. Everyone wants to have a unique costume that blows people away, however, most people fall short. Well grab a drink, take notes and relax because whether you're competing at a friend's party, or at a night club costume contest we've got the inside secrets for you on what the judges are looking for.

Rule number one:
Forget the idea of going to your local party store for the latest Halloween costume like Cat Woman, Iron Man or any such nonsense. Now this is not to say the party store or local costume shop is completely worthless, use it for ideas to the start of your costume. Not only do the costumes sold there look cheap and you look cheesy wearing them, but they are completely unoriginal and boring. Focus more on finding an idea from the combination of their costumes that's new and exciting.

Rule number two:
Pick a costume that fits your personality AND your body. You may want to dress up as a stripper nun, but there's nothing more displeasing than seeing a person who spent more time getting into their costume than they did making it. There are plenty of wonderful ideas for the people who don't fit the Barbie mold, don't stress over it, accept reality, and spend your time finding the right costume for you. (like thinking of costumes that can mock the Barbie mold).

Rule number three:
Avoid dressing up like unknown characters/people or making your costume hard to "get".

Rule number four:
Run your costume by at least 5 people before the big event. No, not your mother she doesn't count. Get the opinions of at least 3 to 5 people who will not lie to you. If they don't get it, think its stupid, or just too cliché, take their advice and try mixing it up.

Rule number five:
Cute only works for kids. Grown up costume contests don't have to be all serious, but stay away from "cute" ideas. A five year old in pig tails dressed up like a baby is adorable, a grown up doing the same is just lame. Know when you're too mature to pull it off.

Rule number six:
This one is for all the couples out there picking out Halloween Costumes. Couples costumes are probably the hardest of all to make unique. Please avoid the popular yet utterly unoriginal ideas of going as things such as Romeo and Juliet or a pimp and a hooker. Try for something that is not usually a "couples" theme. You don't have to be a man and a woman or even something that people would normally associate of going together.

Rule number seven:
Making fun of popular culture is a gold mine. The more hilarious your costume is and the more it mocks a famous person that has been in the spot light recently the better. Just make sure it's someone and something lots of people know about. Do not however make fun of people's horrible misfortune like a disease or handicap for some good ideas watch this video from knots scary farm Halloween haunt the hanging (Knots Berry Farm)

Rule number eight:
Popular costumes that seem unoriginal can be a success. You just have to know how to put a new twist on them. The favorites can be a good thing when used correctly; you just have to come up with your own unique concept of them.

Rule number nine:
Be the character you're portraying. If you don't like your costume no one else will either. This rule especially applies to horror costumes; they are the hardest to pull off. In order to fully win people over with your costume they have to believe it. Anyone can dress up like Freddy Kruger but don't try unless you can seriously scare someone by doing it.

And last but certainly not least...
Rule number ten: HAVE FUN! All in all, costumes are supposed to be fun and exciting. It is a chance for you break out of yourself and put on someone else persona for a while. No one likes a spoil sport and even if you don't win, you'll still be happy if you had a blast doing it!

Unlike other bridal shows, this show has a limited number of tickets available to the public. Our goal is to provide couples with an opportunity to see the very best, talk with the exhibitors one-on-one and ask real questions in an intimate environment. We will not have a traditional Fashion Show; instead this event will include a New York style walk-around where the models will be mingling with the crowd throughout the event.
