A PIECE OF MY HEART

A Piece of My Heart is a powerful drama centering on six of the 11,000 women who served in various capacities during the Vietnam War...and the lasting impact of their experience. The playwright, Shirley Lauro, interweaves verbatim excerpts from the experiences of real women into a compelling drama. We learn how the lives of these women and others like them were profoundly affected by their participation in Vietnam, whether as military or medical personnel, Red Cross workers or entertainers. The U.S. government and population at large refused for years to acknowledge the importance of their service in Vietnam, how they gave hope to and saved the lives of servicemen and civilians alike. The military didn't even keep record of how many women served. This beautifully crafted play gives us a glimpse into the action, night-life, courage and emotions they experienced, as well as their lives as Vietnam.

The cast includes: Jennifer Barber, Caroline Clark, Nikki Dayanghirang, David Lee Rock, Lindsey Smith, Veronica Surber, Michelle Weingarden, and Althea Williams.

Performances are March 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29 at 8:00 PM.
There will also be a special Sunday matinee performance on March 16 at 2:00 PM to benefit the Bakersfield College Nursing Program.

VW Bugs and Buses Invade the Village 5

VW Bugs and Buses Coming — March 29

VW Bugs and Buses Invade the Village 5 is coming to the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Avenue in Bakersfield on March 29 from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.

Organized by Cen-Cal Speed Shop and various sponsoring partners, the event will for the fifth consecutive year give visitors the opportunity to ogle and admire hundreds of vintage Volkswagens (VW) driven in from near and far. The show will feature air-cooled Bugs, Buses, Karmann Ghias, Type IIIs and Special Interest VWs. Awards will be given in stock and custom categories, as well as the much sought-after Best of Show Award.

Toss in fun car-related games and contests for children and adults, plus delicious food, and you have an activity the whole family will enjoy. Regular admission prices apply. Children ages three and under get in free. And the parking is free, too.

The Kern River Trio will be offering the final concert in this season's Fred and Beverly Dukes concert series at 4 p.m. on March 30 at First Congregational Church, 5 Real Rd. Inaugural Cesar Chavez Celebration Slated for March 30

DELANO, CA – Workers across KernCounty will present their Inaugural Cesar Chavez Celebration to remember the contributions of the man who brought better working conditions to many in this area. Join the SEIU Local 521 Latino Caucus and others starting at 10 a.m. Sunday, March 30 as we honor the birthday of Cesar Chavez, the only man of indigenous heritage to have a holiday named in his honor. It has been 15 years since his passing and the principles he lived by continue to inspire generations of farm workers, community leaders, students and the Chicano Movement.

The celebration will open with a welcome by Delano City Mayor Grace Vallejo, a member of Cesar Chavez’s family and Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the UFW. Other local legislators and VIPs have been invited. At 11 a.m., the event continues with a parade through town in which all those in attendance may participate. Throughout the day, live music by Rene Infante (son of the legendary Pedro Infante), Velorio, and others and dancing by Danza Mexica Ollin Coyotlwill take the stage at CecilAvenuePark. Vendors will sell food, drinks and arts and crafts, and entertainment for the kids will be provided.

School Bus 'Roadeo’

School Bus 'Roadeo’ Scheduled for April 5

Local residents have an opportunity to see why school bus drivers are skillful at safely transporting children, by attending the 24th annual California Association of School Transportation Officials (CASTO) School Bus ARoadeo@ on April 5. It will take place from 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools Transportation Service Center, 705 S. Union Avenue in Bakersfield.

Approximately 90 school bus drivers from Kern, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties will maneuver their vehicles through obstacles and situations they may encounter while transporting children in this annual event hosted by CASTO=s Chapter 12.

Winners earn the right to compete in the CASTO Southern Sectional on May 3 at Santa Anita Racetrack in Pasadena, which qualifies drivers for the California championship at Galt on May 25.

Drivers will be asked to parallel park, back up stall, as well as perform offset alley and backing-crossover maneuvers, among others. Competition simulates testing drivers must pass to obtain a California school bus driver=s license. All drivers must also take the Apre-trip@ written test administered by the California Highway Patrol.

While the competition is entertaining, it also underscores the safety training required of all school bus drivers who transport the area=s children every school day.

The Honky Tonk Truckers will be one of the featured acts at the 3rd Annual Bit of Bakersfield Festival at the Park at Riverwalk on Saturday April 5th.

The event is being held at the Brighthouse Amphitheatre located at 11200 Stockdale Hwy at the intersection of Buena Vista Road and Stockdale Highway.

The music starts at 5:00 pm and the Honky Tonk Truckers are scheduled to perform from 7:30 pm to 8:15 pm. This is a family event so bring the kids out for a fun filled evening of food and entertainment under the stars at Bakersfield's premier concert arena.

Shafter Band, 'Dixie Nuts' go wild for New Orleans Fundraiser on April 5th

The sights, sounds and flavors of the Big Easy will come to Bakersfield on Saturday, April 5, at “An Evening in New Orleans,” a fund-raising dinner at First Congregational Church. Proceeds will help pay for the church’s summer mission trip to New Orleans to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

The mission team will go to Louisiana in July and spend five days helping the United Church of Christ disaster recovery office in its efforts to help approximately 200 families rebuild their homes. In some areas, such as Jefferson parish, residents still living in FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) trailers are now being forced out and urgently need help.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. at the church, located at 5 Real Road. Dinner will include authentic jambalaya, Mardi Gras salad, Southern green beans, and bread pudding or praline squares. A vegetarian version of the main entrée also will be available.

Musical entertainment will be provided by The Dixie Nuts, a Dixieland band from Shafter. The band has been playing together for 20 years and includes: Cris Starrh, piano; Larry Starrh, electric bass; Mike Anderson, drums; Ed Hughes, clarinet; Randy Toews, trombone; and Kelly Bergen and Gary Ingle, trumpet and flugelhorn. The church’s own pianist, Jim Page, will also play New Orleans style music. In addition, door prizes will be given away.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $7.50 for children, in advance. Prices at the door will be $17 for adults and $8 for children. Advance tickets will be on sale at the church after the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, March 30, and from 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 4. Tickets can also be purchased by calling 872-3646.

"Quackers for Kids" Rubber Duck Race

The Ladies Active 20-30 of the Golden Empire is having their 2nd Annual "Quackers for Kids" Rubber Duck Race.

Sunday, April 6, 2008, 10a.m.

5000 ducks will float down the stream at RiverWalk park. First duck to cross the finish line will win a trip for 2 to a luxury resort, airfare included to Puerto Vallarta!

Ducks 2-10 and the last duck will also win prizes such at a trip for 4 to Disneyland, gift certificates for local restaurants, to name a few.

Proceeds from the duck race will benefit local childrens charities, such as PAL, MARE, Boys & Girls Clubs, and Jamison Center, to name a few.

The Bakersfield Meditation Society offers Free classes in meditation, relaxation, and personal and professional development. Meditation is a process of quieting your thoughts and reaching higher states of mind. Beginners are always welcome! Meditation instruction and a short meditation are included in each class.
