Exciting changes at CALM

Weekends at the California Living Museum (CALM) just got more exciting. Wildlife presentations are now scheduled four times on Saturdays (including Twilight at CALM) and three times on Sundays. CALM Animal Keepers focus on mammals, birds of prey or reptiles during individual presentations, providing visitors with up close and personal experiences with the animals.

During Twilight at CALM on Saturdays, the Curator of Animals conducts a lively, hour-long show introducing visitors to a large variety of animals ranging from tarantulas to baby skunks. Presentations are entertaining, and everyone leaves a little more knowledgeable about the wildlife around them.

The Central California Children’s Railroad is on track for rides Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; during Twilight at CALM, and Sundays 1-4 p.m. This is not a kiddie train ride — adults enjoy it as much as children. Tracks run east of the zoo and during the eight minute ride passengers get a great view of the Kern River with frequent glimpses of wildlife in their natural habitat. Train tickets are only $1.

Lipizzaner Stallions

2008 represents the 38th Anniversary season of The Lipizzaner Stallions. All new music, choreography and routines have been incorporated in this anniversary edition with a major emphasis on the historical background and foundation of the Lipizzaner breed, from its original breeding and use as a horse of war to a horse of nobility and aristocracy to a living form of equestrian art. The show emulates the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, Austria, in its presentation of Lipizzans, and maintains a traditional as well as entertaining performance similar in many ways to what you would see at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna.

Also included in the performance is a segment called the "Airs Above the Ground." These are the spectacular leaps and maneuvers, once used by riders in saddle to protect and defend themselves on the battlefield, which are now preserved as an equestrian work of art. When you see the Lipizzans perform, it is like stepping back four hundred years and viewing one of the greatest equine ballets in history.

The Lipizzan is a rare and unique breed; its history and culture is known worldwide. The Walt Disney movie The Miracle of the White Stallions, depicting General George S. Patton saving them at the end of World War II from certain extinction, created an even greater world-wide interest in the Lipizzaner breed. Had it not been for Patton, there would be no Lipizzans today.

Although the Lipizzans star in this presentation, the ancestral forefather of the Lipizzan, the Spanish Andalusian, is featured in a high school presentation with special wardrobe themed to traditional Spanish music.

Not only is the Andalusian shown in saddle, but also in a unique presentation where the rider performs all the maneuvers of the Grand Prix Olympic level dressage on the longline, while walking behind the horse and guiding him through his paces.

Bakersfield Track Club Summer Series (formerly known as the Darryl Easter Memorial Handicap Series)

The Bakersfield Track Club Summer Series (formerly known as the Darryl Easter Memorial Handicap Series) is a series of 6 5K runs beginning in early June and running through most of the Summer. The events are held every other Tuesday at 7pm on Alfred Harrell Hwy just across from CALM. See Map

Caution to the wise, 5K running events should only be undertaken by individuals who have been exercising regularly. The BTC and its members are always welcoming to people who want to begin an exercise program, but seek doctor's advice first. That being said, when you do come out to enjoy the fun, make sure you are well hydrated, and if you notice you are not feeling well, slow down and let someone know.

Entry Fees T-shirts Each runner must run 3 races once a handicap is established in order to earn a race shirt. Awards Each runner must compete in three races once a handicap is established to qualify for awards. There will be awards given for overall top ten (best cumulative points in 3 races), and for the top 3 scratch times for male and female. Your Handicap Sandbaggers A sandbagger is a person who purposely runs slower in early races in order to show improvement in later runs. We have rules for you. If you show a 17% improvement your time will be adjusted according to some complicated mathematical formula and your placing will be altered. Contact

On your very first time out, you will be a "scratch runner," or a runner without a handicap. Scratch runners will be given a slip of paper indicating a 15 minute handicap (7:15 pm starting time).

The time run for the 5K this first time will be compared to a 30 minute benchmark. If you run longer than 30 minutes, you will earn a negative handicap (a 34:17 5K will result in a -4:17 handicap and you will begin your next race of the series at 4:17 before 7pm). If you run faster than 30 minutes, you will earn a positive handicap (a 22:51 5K will result in a 7:09 handicap and you will begin your next race at 7minutes and 9 seconds after 7pm).

The idea is that if everyone runs the exact same time next run, we all finish together at 7:30. That never happens. First one in wins. Best points goes to most improved runner.

Lopez House Historic Films Fund-raiser - Aug. 1

It will be Kern County on the big screen as “The House with Three Lives” and “Wild West Country: The Lure of Gold” premier for a one night only screening at the majestic Fox Theatre in Bakersfield beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 1. Proceeds from the $10 per person, non-profit, fund-raiser will be used for the ongoing preservation of the historic J.J. Lopez House at the Kern County Museum. Tickets can be purchased at http://vallitix.rdln.com or by calling (661) 322-5200.

Presented by the museum and Kern River Valley Historical Society, the event will even have a 19th Century feel outside with horses and “Wild West Country…” actors in period attire greeting visitors, along with members of the pioneer Lopez, Coppock, Hill, Rankin and Powers families.

“The House with Three Lives” is a 30 minute documentary detailing the history and preservation of the house built in downtown Bakersfield by Spanish immigrant and Tejon Ranch Manager J.J. Lopez in 1906. It became the home for Otis Coppock, who moved it to Rosedale Highway and Calloway Road in 1953, and later the Hill family that purchased it in the 1960s.

Inspired by the late Bob Powers’ books, “Wild West Country…” is a 90 minute docudrama about the county’s South Sierra region, featuring Joseph Walker’s discovery of the pass that bears his name in 1834 through the Kern River Gold Rush and the establishment of gold camp, Whiskey Flat — now known as Kernville.

The films were produced by veteran filmmaker Chuck Barbee, whose credits include work on the Peabody Award network series “Hot Dog” and Emmy Award winner “Night Court.”

Kern County Democrats First Wednesdays

The Kern County Democratic Party hosts a get-together the first Wednesday of each month at Dagny’s Coffee. This is no formal meeting or topic, just a chance for local Democrats and progressively-minded people to talk about the important issues of the day. It’s a great way to meet like-minded people in a county where Democrats, liberals and progressives often feel they are alone in their political leanings. Kern County Museum's Fun Day: Splish Splash Safari

Learn about water, play in water, slide through water, and generally celebrate this life sustaining fluid we often take for granted. Don't forget to wear your bathing suit! Admission of $2 per person includes 6 ride tickets for children 3-12 and a variety of free activities all with a surfing safari theme! Children under 3 can get in free. Extra ride tickets are 50 cents and a hot dog lunch is available for $3 per person. Don't miss out on this fun filled event!

A ‘Splish, Splash Safari’

What better way for children to keep cool and enjoy a summer day than by attending the Kern County Museum’s Splish, Splash Safari on Aug. 14 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the museum, 3801 Chester Avenue in Bakersfield. Admission is only $2, which includes six activity tickets for children ages 3-12. Extra activity tickets are 50 cents apiece. Even a hot dog lunch is available for only $3. Children younger than age three are admitted free with parent or guardian. Parking is free, too!

Don’t forget your swimsuit because this safari includes a lot of splishing and splashing with a water slide and all kinds of other water adventures to help children have fun learning about and celebrating the life sustaining fluid we often take for granted.

Castle & Cooke Teams with Lake Tulloch Lions Club to Present Vintage Car Show

(COPPEROPOLIS, Calif.) – Castle & Cooke -- purveyor of high-end resort, residential communities and commercial centers -- today announces Copperopolis Town Square will host Hot Copper Days, a vintage car show sponsored by the Lake Tulloch Lions Club of Calaveras County on August 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Pre-registration entry fees are $15, and $20 at the gate, day-of-admission. Awards are bestowed for first and second place in 13 car classes, with judging taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. Also awarded will be “Best in Show” and the “Copperopolis Town Square Manager’s Award,” as selected by Billie B. Kane. The first 100 entries will receive free souvenir dash plaques, courtesy of Copperopolis Town Square.
