HolidayLights at CALM's new attractions

"HolidayLights at CALM" will feature an imaginary ocean of aquatic animals to celebrate its seventh season, from November 28-December 30. Event hours are 5:30-9 p.m., each night, except Dec. 24-25, when CALM will be closed. Always family-friendly, HolidayLights is once again offering $2, Monday-Thursday, ticket discounts. Regular admission prices are $6 for children ages 3-12. Children ages 13-17 and senior citizens (age 60+) are $10. Adults pay $12. Tickets will be on sale a week prior to the event opening through Vallitix at (661) 322-5200 or on the Internet at http://vallitix.rdln.com.

New to visitors this year is an ocean of aquatic animals transformed in CALM's tranquil pond, plus lighted mariachi and fireworks displays. Traditional crowd favorite, the symphony of dancing trees, is back, along with rides on the Candy Cane Express and Grand Carousel. All of it takes place amid displays of more than two million lights interwoven throughout CALM's 14, beautifully landscaped, acres. Proceeds from HolidayLights at CALM benefit the non-profit CALM Foundation, providing funding for developing new and exciting animal exhibits at CALM.

CALM, located at 10500 Alfred Harrell Hwy., in northeast Bakersfield (between Lake Ming and Hart Park), has for 26 years cared for animals that have been injured or otherwise cannot survive in their natural habitat. About Maggie:

Maggie Tomaino currently teaches and offers private sessions in and around the Western US.
A natural healer, and psychic, having been blessed with the gifts of clairaudience, (clear hearing), clairsentience, (clear feeling) , and clairvoyance, (clear sight). She has been working with her gifts since childhood. Holiday Lamplight Tours

This 3-8 p.m. Clock Tower Holidays event at the Kern County Museum in Bakersfield features 100 old-fashioned lanterns setting the mood for a trip back in time to what the holidays were like when Kern County was first settled. Visit Old West encampments and historic structures led by beautifully costumed docents and be entertained by strolling minstrels, carolers and bell choirs. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Museum member prices are $4 for adults and $3 for children. Carriage rides, food and beverages are also available at additional costs.

Holiday Lamplight Tours

Tickets are on sale for the Dec. 5 Holiday Lamplight Tours from 3-8 p.m. at the Kern County Museum, 3801 Chester Ave., in Bakersfield. See the holidays celebrated as they were more than a century ago. One hundred old-fashioned lanterns will light the way for a night filled with festive decorations and beautifully costumed interpreters to help spread holiday cheer the way it was done by Kern County’s pioneer settlers. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children, $4 for adult museum members and $3 for their children.

Along the 16 acre route, visitors will happen upon Old West encampments with settlers cooking their meals in Dutch Ovens over an open campfire. Adding to the holiday spirit, strolling minstrels, carolers and handbell choirs will provide traditional seasonal music. There will be opportunities to see and learn about the historic/refurbished Lopez-Hill House, tour the 1882 Norris one room school house, Queen Anne Victorian Howell House, 1868 Barnes Log Cabin and 1892 St. John’s Episcopal Mission.

Seeing the sights while touring in a horse drawn carriage is a fun option for an additional charge. Refreshments will also be available for purchase.

Wilderness First Aid Basics is a 16-hour (2 day) program that is designed for those who work, live, or play in remote areas such as rural areas , wilderness and back-country environments. This course contains the module “When Help is Delayed” and provides an excellent program for boaters, camp workers, scouts, hikers and other outdoor sports enthusiasts.
This class covers assessment and urgent first aid techniques, but not in-depth CPR. Basic first aid skills are covered, making this course appropriate for anyone regardless of experience level. No prerequisites are required.

Do you like to exercise? I know I don't but I love to do Zumba. It is an energetic dance and fitness program that is sweeping the nation and we have it here in Bakersfield

It will be held at Silver Creek Community Center on Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 8 a.m. We will be doing dance and fitness moves to your favorite latin and international rhythms like Cumbia, Reggaeton, Merengue, Bhangra, African and Salsa. Desperate Depressed Women (DDW) is an organization dealing with women experiencing personal hardships in dealing with life and depression. In our meetings women find an open door, a comfortable homelike environment to come and share their feelings and let it all out. DDW has 5 helpful steps designed to make you feel better and help you get out of this rut. These 5 steps start from within oneself and work your way out.
Step 1 is all about letting go. It's about forgiving not only the people that did you harm, but forgiving yourself.
Step 2 is finding out exactly who you are and what makes YOU truly happy.
Step 3 is all about your body, you have but only one, so you must take care of it as best as possible.
Step 4 is about chasing your dreams and making them come true, even if it takes a lifetime, it's a race worth running.
Step 5 is the smallest and simplest thing to follow. Step 5 is all about giving. It doesn't matter if it's a small or a big gesture, nothing can make you feel better than making a difference in somebody's life.

Learn to Meditate!

The Bakersfield Meditation Society offers Free classes in meditation, relaxation, and personal and professional development. Beginners are always welcome! Meditation is a process of quieting your thoughts and reaching higher and happier states of mind. Meditation instruction and a short meditation are included in each class. Classes are held at the Greenacres Community Center from 7-8 pm. The next class is on Wednesday, December 23rd.

Wiccan Wednesday-Is a class for any one who is a beginner or just interested in learning about the Wiccan Path. This class will be ongoing beginning July 1st and held every week on Wednesday from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. This class will be geared toward a 101 style. We will be covering every thing from history, philosophy, and the ethics of cultural appropriation, to meditation, energy, types of magical practice, tips, and tools.

A little about Derek:

Hail and welcome! I am Derek Wrigley, the newest healer at the Enchanted Cottage. My spiritual path is that of Shamanic Wicca.
I moved to Bakersfield in October of '07 to start a new life with the most wonderfully magical woman a man could ever hope to share life with. I was raised in the small lumber town of Roseburg Oregon. I spent much of my youth outdoors and the wilderness is my second home. I took my first class in core shamanism with Christina Pratt way back when I was in Junior High. It was also at that time I was introduced to Taoism. By the time I graduated from high school I had studied with a Taoist Mystic and philosopher Bill Horden author of "The Tao of Cool", had a 2nd degree in Reiki, spoke two foreign languages and had a 2nd degree black belt in Tang Soo Do. By the time I was 23 I was married and nationally certified as a Licensed Massage Therapist in Oregon. I had a very successful practice. Ten years, two wonderful kids, and a divorce (thank the goddess) later, I moved here. Needing to repair spiritually the damage done by my marrige, I found wicca. I have been on the wiccan path for several years now. I am currently attending B.C. and working toward a Nursing Degree.
