Exciting changes at CALM

Weekends at the California Living Museum (CALM) just got more exciting. Wildlife presentations are now scheduled four times on Saturdays (including Twilight at CALM) and three times on Sundays. CALM Animal Keepers focus on mammals, birds of prey or reptiles during individual presentations, providing visitors with up close and personal experiences with the animals.

Presentations are entertaining, and everyone leaves a little more knowledgeable about the wildlife around them.

The Central California Children’s Railroad is on track for rides Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; during Twilight at CALM, and Sundays 1-4 p.m. This is not a kiddie train ride — adults enjoy it as much as children. Tracks run east of the zoo and during the eight minute ride passengers get a great view of the Kern River with frequent glimpses of wildlife in their natural habitat. Train tickets are only $1.

Sierra Art Trails

Sierra Art Trails welcomes visitors to its sixth annual open studios tour.

Artists and artisans will open their studios or show their work at various locations around Eastern Mariposa and Madera counties for this two day event on October 11 & 12 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Enjoy a weekend taking in the fresh air and pristine beauty of the Southern Yosemite Foothills while meeting the area's many artists and seeing some at work in their studios. Plan your Art Trails weekend by attending the Preview Exhibit featuring representative works by all Sierra Art Trails artists. The Preview Exhibit is open to the public from September 13th through October 14th, with a Grand Opening reception on Saturday, September 20 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Stellar Gallery in Oakhurst. This event will include food, live music and fun.

Open Player Tryouts (Bakersfield Jam, NBA Development League)

2008-09 BAKERSFIELD JAM OPEN PLAYER TRYOUTS

The Bakersfield Jam of the NBA Development League will be holding open player tryouts for the 2008-2009 season on October 11^th and 12^th at Tevis Jr. High School. Tevis Jr. High School is located at 3901 Pin Oak Park Blvd., Bakersfield, CA, 93311.

Tryouts will begin on Saturday, October 11^th. The first day will run in two waves with the first one beginning at 10am and the second beginning at 6pm. Players making the first cuts will be asked to return on Sunday, October 12^th at 10am.

Pre-registration is required. The non-refundable fee is $125, with the deadline being Friday, October 3^rd, at 5pm. All players are required to submit the following: 1) Tryout Player Information Sheet; 2) Player Release/Eligibility Form; 3) Authorization, Acknowledgment & Release Form; and 4) Disclosure Form. The registration packet contains these four pages in PDF form and can be downloaded from the Jam website; www.bakersfieldjam.com. * Forms and payment must be received by the team No Later than Friday, October 3, 2008 to secure a spot. Walk-up registration is discouraged and there is no guarantee of acceptance.

Players will participate in drills in front of the Jam coaching staff, as well as an elite group of local basketball ambassadors. A cut will be made following the first day of tryouts with the top players being asked to return on Sunday. From this tryout, players could be invited to the Jam’s training camp after meeting the necessary D-League requirements.

“No where else in professional sports can athletes participate in tryouts for such a high level of play,” says Jam Managing Partner, David Higdon. “The NBA Development League is one step away from the NBA, meaning players in the D-League will be exposed to NBA player development staff including general managers on a regular basis. NBA dreams can truly be achieved through these tryouts.”

The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA’s official minor league and features 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA teams. The league has produced 15 percent of the players on 2007-08 end-of-season NBA rosters and continues to develop current NBA coaches and referees. In fostering the league’s connection to the community, its teams, players and staff promote youth basketball, support local needs and interests, and assist in educational development through NBA D-League Cares programs. The NBA D-League also advances the game of basketball as the research and development arm of the NBA.
