Twilight" Los Angeles, 1992

Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, a documentary theater play written by award-winning writer and actress Anna Deveare Smith, will be performed by students in Bakersfield College’s Department of Performing Arts on March 4, 5, 6 and March 11, 12, 13 in the College’s Indoor Theater. All performances are at 8 p.m.

“Twilight was originally a one-woman show of which Ms. Smith skillfully portrayed each person,” said director, Bakersfield College performing arts professor Kimberly Chin. “However, we will have more than 16 student actors portraying the more than 40 people in the play. Our students are working as an ensemble and have committed themselves to offering viewers a night of professional, quality theater.”

Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is a one woman play written and originally performed by Anna Deavere Smith. The original Broadway production opened at the Cort Theater in New York City on April 17, 1994, ran for 72 performances and was nominated for the 1994 Tony Award for the Best Play. Anna Deavere Smith was nominated for a 1994 Tony Award and recreated her role in the filmed production in 2000 directed by Marc Levin.

Smith interviewed hundreds of people of which more than 40 are depicted in the play. In this one-woman show, Smith skillfully portrayed each person based on her detail study of their body language, vocal quality, vocal tone, and used their real words. Bakersfield College’s production will be presented in an intimate three-quarter round formation. Video footage of the events leading up to and including the riots of 1992 will be shown.

All performances begin at 8 p.m. and doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for Bakersfield College’s performance of Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 are $3.50 for students/staff/seniors/military and $5.50 for general admission, and will be available at the door. Due to adult content and language, Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 is not suitable for children under the age of 6.

Endeavour Elementary proudly presents the musical "TO BE OR NOT TO BE...a PIRATE?"

Four years ago I took over the drama program at Endeavour Elementary. Since then we have perfromed three very successful musicals. This year I decided to take on something much more challenging, and as I guessed the kids at Endeavour rose to the challenge! Not only are they performing a difficult musical score but the play I chose was not written as a child's script! We were attempting to perform a script written for adults! Once again they have done it! They never cease to amaze! Not only does Endeavour's drama club entertain our parents, neighbors and friends, we are actively involved with the senior citizens of our community. Each year we perfrom a free show for all the seniors in our community. Last year we had several from Glenwood Gardens come for some great entertainment and then a meet and greet with the cast while they shared coffee and treats. This annual tradition is bringing two very different generations together to get to know each other! What a great experience for all involved!

Learn to Use a Map & Compass

Here is your opportunity to learn to read a topographic map and understand all that the map has to tell. Students will learn about different types of maps, information and symbols on the map, coordinate systems, plotting points on the map, plotting azimuths, intersection/resection, making a pace cord, about the compass and how to use it. The classroom work will be followed by practical exercises in the field to include a navigation course. Dry camping is available at no additional cost. Class space will be limited so sign up early. CALM's Adventurers

Zoo visits are always a lot of fun and visiting the California Living Museum (CALM) each month through May offers new adventures for children ages three-to-nine years. Highly popular with the children, ‘CALM Adventurers’ for 6-9 year-olds is back the second Saturday of each month beginning Feb. 13.

CALM Adventurers, developed specifically for children, gives them the chance to meet animals up close, study plants that make California so special and sometimes go where ordinary visitors don't. CALM Adventurers takes place from 10 am-noon on Feb. 13, March 13, April 10 and May 8. Cost is $10 for member children and $15 for non-members. Parents and other siblings are able to visit the zoo, at regular admission prices, while class is in session.

Comply with basic requirement of the state of California to meet the minimum standard of training for eligibility for a Concealed Weapon permit.
Provide an understanding and respect of the legal and moral responsibility of carrying a weapon in public
Convey an essential level of capability regarding the rudimentary use of the handgun

Objective; provide the student graduate with the basic training required by law in the state of California and to meet or exceed the requirements for the basic training in order to carry a concealed weapon.

Animal drawing at CALM

What better way to re-live exciting moments at the California Living Museum (CALM) then by learning how to draw the animals you have seen? Acclaimed local artist Gita Lloyd will be offering age specific classes for children and adults from 1-4 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, through May, teaching how to sketch animals as they appear in nature at CALM. Classes are $18 for CALM members and $20 for others. Pre-registration is required for all sessions. Cancellations cannot be refunded.

Class dates and age levels are:

March 13 — Reptiles Up Close for ages 12-15

April 10 — Herby Herbivores for age 16 and adult

May 8 — Beautiful Omnivores for ages 12-15

Supplies are provided and all skill levels are welcome to attend this amazing class where attendees will sketch live animals, learn basic drawing technique, learn to make a sketchbook journal and finish each class with a watercolor painting of one of CALM’s ambassador animals. Students are encouraged to bring their own sketchbooks and pencils.

CALM for 26 years has been home to animals that because of injury or abandonment cannot survive on their own in the wild. It is located at 10500 Alfred Harrell Highway, between Lake Ming and Hart Park in northeast Bakersfield.
