CALM welcomes Nettie

CALM has become home to Nettie the beaver at the zoo’s northeast Bakersfield location, 10500 Alfred Harrell Highway between Lake Ming and Hart Park. Nettie is a two-year-old, North American beaver (Castor Canadensis). She shares an enclosure, outside the Reptile House, with CALM’s American white pelican, herring gull and Canadian goose.

“Nettie has a sweet disposition, as she was hand raised by another facility,” said Zoo Manager Lana Fain. “She may have a slight brain injury affecting her vision and movement a bit. She enjoys the company of humans and loves yams!”

Beavers are nature’s "engineers," building large water habitat for wide varieties of animal life. They often come in conflict with humans in agricultural areas where water flow may be inhibited or trees damaged. Beavers are well known for their tails, which they use as a rudder, to build dams and slap the water surface to warn family of danger.

Beavers are the largest rodent in California and second largest in the world. They once numbered about 60 million but now about 8 million exist.

Don Richardson, curator of animals, said, “Beavers directly from the wild, such as the “Riverlakes Beavers,” are often more difficult to acclimate, but Nettie is appropriate for our enclosure because she was hand raised.”

I agree with Kenneth German's comment regarding inapproiate driving on highway 46. What is going on in the heads of those who think that a wider road will prevent crashes. Ever hear of a car or truck on Hwy 99 crossing over all north bound lanes, jumping the middle barricade and hitting a southbound vehicle? How wide is that road? Passing lanes are a good alternative. Once a truck driver myself I understand how compliance is important no matter what you do. Stay in your lane, go the speed limit, do what the signs say. If the sign says no passing then don't pass. I think stricter license testing both written, and behind the wheel from the DMV would be better. It would keep some off the road.

I run into compliance lacking people occasionally in my daily business. When they don't comply there are setbacks and/or complications. It all comes down to personal responsibility those that don't have it pay a price and unfortunatelly innocent victims sometimes pay a bigger price.

Please help me find my dog BOWE, he got out yesterday 11/11 int he Oleander area and is not wearing his tags becuase they are on another stray I found. Bowe was in his kennel and the other was not becuase they are both males and didnt want a fight while I was at work. However both got out and Bowe is still missing

AUTISM WORKSHOP: ADULTS ON THE SPECTRUM SUPPORT GROUP

On Saturday, November 7, 2009, the Kern Autism Network will present “Adults on the Spectrum Support Group,” facilitated by Vickie Shufton. The group will meet at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools office, 1300 - 17^th Street, Main Floor Room 1A, in Bakersfield, from 10:00 a.m. until noon.

Vickie Shufton, Ed. S. School Psychologist, is a SELPA Program Specialist in the areas of behavior, crisis intervention and educating adolescents with disabilities. She has been a high school English teacher, a high school resource teacher, a department chair for Special Education, and a teacher of students with emotional and behavioral challenges in a self-contained program for middle and high school students.

This Adult Support Group is designed for individuals on the spectrum, 18 years and older, no children please. If you must bring an aide or support person, please let us know in advance for seating accommodations.

Topics include relationships, employment, loneliness, education/college, friendships, social problems, and coping with day-to-day struggles. This support group meets once a month.

A New Work Ethic; The Progeny of Helicopter Parents

    Physics Professor Kurt Weisenfeld of Georgia Tech University succinctly describes an insidious and debilitating epidemic infecting our societies current generation of youth. The symptoms are easily identifiable. Weisenfeld illustrates one of the primary symptoms, entitlement, perfectly in his article stating “What alarms me is their indifference toward grades as an indication of personal effort and performance”. Weisenfeld’s article is a critical commentary on the attitude of entitlement in the college environment. The effects of this work ethic are not limited to college term papers and math quizzes. These are our future doctors, engineers, and teachers.

    We have all seen this phenomena rapidly spreading throughout society. But to what can we trace this outbreak? This epidemic? The breeding ground is actually quite diverse. Preschool through elementary school, Little League, gymnastics, and yes it could even be occurring in your neighborhood. These are the petri dishes of this epidemic. The source: the Helicopter Parent.

    The Helicopter Parent is someone we have all seen, in fact, they are usually hard not to notice as they are usually causing a scene at their children’s school, athletic events and birthday parties. Their primary parenting objective is to make sure that their child is spared from even a hint of disappointment, shielded from experiencing failure, and making sure that whatever situation or activity their child is involved in is “fair”. The
Helicopter Parent is under the illusion that this will produce a person who is ready to take on the world and fulfill all of their dreams. Unfortunately, the results of this parenting strategy are usually dismal if not disastrous.

    Regrettably, the Helicopter Parent seems to be quite prolific and are quite adept at insidiously infiltrating school PTA’s and sports organizations. The result is that we now rarely recognize the individuals and teams who are truly the “best” because of hard work and natural talent or ability. Everyone gets a trophy for exhibiting a modicum of “effort” (which many times demonstrates itself as sitting in the outfield picking grass). In effect, we have disregarded and downplayed the significance of hard work, talent, and actual achievement; opting instead to reward everyone who simply puts in the effort to show up. Essentially, we have made everyone losers. This is where our children learn that you will get the reward and recognition regardless of effort or ability.

    A glaring oversight of this method of parenting is that it fails to take into account reality. Reality is that in most of life’s circumstances in order to experience success you must work for it, and many times you will experience failure, disappointment, and unfairness. One of the most crucial things we must teach our children is not how to accept failure but how hard one must work to overcome it and succeed, how we must learn to rise above our disappointments. Children must be taught that we will not always get what we think is fair, but to fight for what is right.

    Unfortunately, this is not a uncalculated parenting mishap that has occurred. This is a meticulously cultivated environment being created that is producing individuals who believe that they should succeed simply because they exist! A very disturbing trend for our society as author and Professor Kurt Weisenfeld warns us that “our country will be forced to take them seriously later, when the stakes are much higher. They must recognize that their attitude is not only self-destructive but socially destructive.”

How to Win A Halloween Costume Contest

Halloween is just around the corner, and the search is on for that perfect Halloween Costume. Whether you're entertaining, attending a party or just trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, the perfect costume is paramount for a successful Halloween. We've scoured our resources and developed this list of tips on designing a Halloween look sure to sway the judges of any respectable Costume Contest in your favor.

Tip #1 - Start with 3 or more costume ideas.
Challenging yourself to thinking of at least 3 possible costumes will result in greater creativity. The first costume idea may have some drawbacks in the final analysis. For example, a sword looks great for a Saimiri warrior, but don't count on being able to get into your local nightclub with it; and if you aren't already a belly-dancer, there's hardly time at this point to take belly-dancing lessons. Expand the original ideas with accessories, makeup and other ways you'll truly be able to stay in character.

Tip #2 - Stay away from "stock" costumes to create your own unique look.
A costume shop or variety store is a great place to get ideas, or even create a base for your final costume, but you won't win any contests by being the 100th replica of Cat Woman. The costumes available at party stores also tend to be on the flimsy side, which could result in a “wardrobe malfunction” moment. Instead, try to couple the ideas from the store with your own twists (and perhaps a layer of real clothing) to be truly unique.

Tip #3 - Avoid the obscure.
Try to keep your costume mainstream enough that most people will "get it" and understand who you're trying to be. Either stay with what's popular now, or what has proven to be timeless, Dracula, for example. Avoid characters so little known you'll have to spend the night explaining yourself.

Tip #4 - Use popular culture to your advantage, if you dare.
Tried and true Halloween rules are that funnier the costume, the easier it is to win the contest; and nothing is funnier than a joke at someone else's expense. If you're going to use a popular culture jab as your costume base, just be sure that the news is relatively current so everyone gets the joke. For example, a pee soaked David Hasselhoff is current; but the Hoff accompanied by Kit is outdated (at least until the new series picks up). Also be ready to take the bad with the good, some people may appreciate your humor more than others.

Tip #5 - Play up your best points by picking a costume that fits your personality and your body.
Let's face it, not everyone can pull off a stripper or a Charlie Chaplin. Pick a costume that accents your strong points. Do you have great legs? Are you funny? Has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like a celebrity? Can you make little kids cry with your evil laugh? Stay away from anything that makes you feel uncomfortable when you're in character; to win a contest you'll have to act continuously like whoever (or whatever) inspired you.

Tip #6 - Couples only.
This tip is for couples attending a function together: being his-and-hers and original is almost impossible. Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and Prince Charming, Two Peas in a Pod, zzzz. It's easier to be creative by coming up with your own unique ideas and leave the contest judges to figuring out who you came with.

Tip #7 - More is more - dress from head to foot and accessorize.
No winning costume is complete without the extra touches. Make sure every inch of your costume is in character from your shoes to your hat, and accessorize with props and makeup. Maximize your look by keeping in character with your speech and mannerisms; act as if you're on a stage the entire time you're wearing that costume (unless you're scaring small children, then it's okay to become human for a moment).

Tip #8 - Last but not least
Run your final costume by at least 5 trusted friends before the big night. We all love our mothers, but they may not be impartial enough to give great costume advice. When you think you're ready, show your costume to five trusted friends who will give you their real opinions. If you have to explain what you are to any one of them, start over at Tip #1.

Murray Farms Corn Field Over-Priced

My husband and I took the kids to the pumpkin patch on Saturday. Boy, were we surprised to lay out $50 for the outing. We let our son take a friend with him and we have a two-year-old too. Little did we know that a toddler would be charged the same $10 as an adult. Yep, $50 for the five of us and very little to show for it. You might say "why not leave?", but the kids were excited as we pulled up to the gate. We could not disappoint them. Just wanted to warn parents before they drivew all that way for a VERY little pumpkin and some face paint. It isn't worth the $$ Murray Farms must be hurtin' and trying to make it back on our kids. Either that or they are just greedy!

Who's your neighbor...

Globalization. We can find out the best place to get Pizza in Venice as easily as downtown Bakersfield. The world has shrunk. Yet, why does it seem our local neighborhoods and communities have actually gotten larger and harder to connect with? Many families express dismay that whole neighborhoods get home from work or school and pull into the garage not to be seen again until the next day when pulling out of the garage to go back to work or school. The busy lives of families with two working parents, multiple kids in school and extracurricular’s, and urban sprawl have caused community and neighborhood relationships to suffer. Some attribute this shallowness to more devious and sinister causes; devious and sinister because of their misleading appearance of innocence and frivolity. According to a local pastor, deteriorating family and community relationships can in part, be attributed to social networking websites such as facebook, myspace, and twitter. This critique of social networking has been voiced by many. However, observing the social networking revolution that has occurred, it has become apparent that instead of creating the relational vacuum, it is simply filling it.
Gone are the days when families sat on the front porch in the twilight, chatting with neighbors about the weather, laundry, politics, or religion while the kids play in front yard. But, are those days really gone? Well, the porch isn‘t gone but it has changed. There is a new front porch in America, and it can be found on social networking sites like facebook, twitter, and myspace. This is where friends separated by five miles or 500, chat about everything from their piles of laundry to Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Parents share their kids latest antics and one liners, and you can hear a friends latest frustration and their greatest joy. There has been a great lament in America about the demise of the front porch. But American’s have proven once again their ingenuity, and like it or not America has a new front porch.

My home, my castle vandalized!

I moved into my home in Feb 2008 and two weeks later the house was vandalized. I know who did this to me. An angry, jealous person who is a jerk and unhappy with his financial situation and life in general. We used to date "off and on" for a few years, and when he met a special woman and wanted to share his life with her, I was happy and wished him well. I believed he would "move on" to a new life adventure, and there were no bad feelings or jealousy on my part. You see, I had "gauged" him pretty well by now. He was broke and in trouble with the IRS in 2006 and wanted to borrow $7000.00 from me. Luckily that never happened as I would have to kiss the money goodbye.

Anyway, he now had someone to take care of him, and I was off the hook so so I thought. He continued to see me "on the side" and said, "what she does not know will not hurt her." Of course, I never visited his home, but he visited mine. This man has lived in the community all his life, has a graduate degree in counseling and claims to be "intuitive" on so many levels. So, now we are in the year 2007, and I was actively looking for a house. We talked about me renting his home, but were unable to work out the logistics and details given that he did not want to move his property and expected that I would allow him to be in the home at any given time working on "important projects." I also began dating a very nice man during this year. Well, the jerk was angry and started making derogatory remarks about my relationship which I chose not to pay attention to.

I bought a house in February 2008 and was happy and excited and moved in. My boyfriend was gracious and took care of all the handy man work prior to my family's visit and the house-blessing. The jerk came over to fix a faucet and even after two days, he was unable to install the faucet appropriately. In the meantime, the jerk opened all the drawers and every cupboard and wanted to check things out. I was uncomfortable with his overall demeanor but did not say anything. There was a picture of my boyfriend on the refrigerator and the jerk commented, "so were you going to discuss this with me?" Did not have anything to discuss as I am entitled to my privacy.

Came home from work on a Friday afternoon to find the doors and windows open and "poop" on my computer, urine all over the floor and the computer keyboard, wires to the television cut off, safe broken in to, or rather his feeble attempts at wanting to break into the safe, a picture of his genitals on the TV screen with the words "f--- you," and so much more! I knew immediately who had been to my home. My friends came over immediately and were also of the opinion that Ken did this to me out of his own anger and rage at my being secure and happy!

His actions were traumatic both psychologically and emotionally. The police did nothing and did not interview the jerk till several months later and destroyed all the evidence collected from my home. The detective in charge said, "I know he did it but there is no proof." The assistant chief of police said the same along with, "it is too expensive conduct the DNA testing" despite the fact that I was willing to pay.

This jerk is currently engaged and at the time had bought an expensive tennis bracelet for his fiance while on a cruise. Of course, the bracelet was charged to her credit card. He believed by breaking into my safe, he could obtain the money to pay the fiance's credit card. I am so glad that the God was watching over me that day. What if I had been in the house? He could have hurt me, raped me or done just about anything!!

While all the material stuff has been replaced and an alarm system installed, my question is: how do people get away by hurting innocent people like me? All because I was happy and dating and did not want to be with him anymore.

What is ironic is that Ken's fiance has not tied the knot despite the two year engagement. Perhaps she too is starting to see the light of day, and does not want to support a loser, because that is what Ken is. The man is "free loader"and probably has smooth talked his way into her innocent heart. What is also very interesting is that it should be of no surprise if there are other women in Ken's life. After all, he is a musician, and an aging, paunchy man who is out of touch with the real world. His music business is pathetic to say the least. He claims to be "all that" but one ought to listen carefully to his words which carry no meaning and no substance. I feel terribly sorry for the blond he is engaged to. The woman probably pays for everything because the man is broke.

I was angry at first for what he did to me and for no reason whatsoever. Never did I interfere or intrude in his life and was in fact happy that he was happy with someone special. I will never comprehend this level of rage and anger. What I will say though is that he did call the following week after the incident and left a nonchalant voice-mail. Then there was an e-mail a couple of months later which was forwarded to law enforcement and of course, my attorney! The man is narcissistic but he is also a coward! He is a scumbag and a low-life and has no regard or respect for anyone else. It is all about him, but you know, what goes around, comes around!

What Ken does not understand is that I am a successful, empowered woman with a great family background and someone who knows how to take care of business. My family and friends have been wonderful and supportive and I am so blessed for everything. The anger and nightmares are over, and I feel nothing but pity for the jerk and also his fiance! If the woman has any sense, she will run as fast as she can but then, Ken may hurt her too. After all, she is the "sugar mama" and he will not let her go. Ken has a reputation of being a "playboy" and dates women who are successful and well off, so that he can "mooch" off!

I hope my story serves as a lesson to all successful women who take pride in their accomplishments! Be careful of the 'freeloaders' and protect what is yours under any and all circumstances.

My home is my castle and Ken is not going to be allowed to hurt me anymore.

Rett Syndrome Awareness

October is National Rett Syndrome Awareness Month:

There are several families living in Bakersfield that have a child with Retts. Most people have never heard of Rett Syndrome although there are close to half a million girls and women suffering worldwide. It is the most disabling of the Autism spectrum disorders. Striking mainly little girls. These girls are born normal only to be put into a regression stage from the age of 6- 18months and they are robbed of their ability to talk, walk, crawl or the use of their hands. Over 80% of the girls suffer seizures, scoliosis and sudden death in their sleep. Many require help with feeding tubes and all require 24-hour-a-day care. It is random and can strike anywhere. There is currently no cure of Rett Syndrome, but it is CURABLE. Research has proven this syndrome can be reversed in mice. Rett Syndrome attacks a child every 5 HOURS but it could be one of the first childhood neurological disorders to be cured. Their findings would have a direct impact on research on Autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s and many others. It was identified just 25 years ago, it’s prevalence equals that of Cystic Fibrosis, Huntington’s and ALS, but is vastly under-funded by comparison. Thousands of letters were sent to the Oprah studios begging for airtime to get the word out about Rett Syndrome. My 4 year old daughter, Gia has Retts and she is the most loveable little “wiggle worm” that you will ever meet. I look into her eyes and just hope one day she will be able to say, “ Mommy, I love you!” Until my daughter is cured and the thousands of other silent Angels, I will not stop spreading the word about Rett Syndrome and begging others to donate for such an extraordinary cause. She constantly has doctor’s appointments at UCLA, Children’s Hospital in Madera, Katie’s Clinic in Oakland and she goes to several offices here in Bakersfield just to keep her little body going. Every mother and father’s wish for their children is to be happy and healthy. My daughter is happy, but she needs your help to become healthy. The scientists, technologies and ideas are in place. Getting Craft With Digital Scrapbooks!

New Age Scrapbopoking-

When most think of scrapbooking, what usually comes to mind is a large table crowded with various tools, scraps of paper and old photos. I have to admit, I was once a victum of such crimes. I almost couldn't scrapbook because my house was turned upside down with unorganized printed photos and all the expensive paper, stickers, and tools that one needs to truly express creativity. I was limited to scrapbooking on long weekends, days off, or when my husband was out of town. I found myself scrapbooking at a friend's house once every three or four months. I was feeling like I was neglecting my hobby, and I didn't like it.

It wasn't until I discovered the digital scrapbooking world that I started scrapbooking at least once a week, if not more! Digital sacrapbooking allows me to organize all my photos. I'm not forced to spend $100's on stickers and paper that never get used up. I have endless use of lettering, themes and more! With traditional albums, I would finish a layout and sometimes find another must have picture in the spread and be disappointed I wouldn't be able to add it in. I resorted to creating another layout of the same theme just to include the exiled picture. Not with digital! Now I have no worries about mistakes or regretted layouts. The fixes are so easy. I also do not have to take up space around my house for storing supplies, and it's always clean!

There are several digital scrapbooks companies to choose from. From places like Wal-Mart.com and Costco.com to specialized companies like kodak.com and creative memories.com, you are sure to find an easy program with many options and price ranges to fit you. I prefer the Creative Memories scrapbpooking software called Storybook Creator Plus 3. You pay a little out of pocket, but compared to what I was spending, I am saving money. The program is versatile and allows both veterans and beginners to create albums to be proud of. Also, their printed albums are gaurenteed quality.

So put away your scissors and glue. It's time for the New Age of Scrapbooking!!

Museum School Tour Over 60 Years Old!

For over 60 years, third and fourth grade students have traveled to the Kern County Museum to learn about the lifestyle and culture of the Yokuts Indians. The program has changed over the years, but the school children of today are still as enthralled as their great-grandparents!

According to museum records, the program was inaugurated sometime in that late 1940s by then museum director Frank Latta. The Native American Life program predates the creation of Pioneer Village; the museum’s first historic structure, the Barnes Log Cabin, wasn’t dedicated until 1950. It is unclear what Latta’s school tour program entailed, but it was likely very informative. In the 1940s, Latta was researching the history and culture of the Yokuts for his seminal book Handbook of the Yokuts Indians, published in 1949. He also employed Yokuts to construct a village near the Kern River in 1948 and made a movie documenting the Yokuts lifestyle in the reconstructed village.

In 1948, then assistant director Richard C. Bailey took over the program and admitted that the program was “still in its formative stages." Bailey took the program to Bakersfield schools, and outlying schools came to the museum. At that time, students walked down steep, concrete steps to view the program in the basement of the main museum building. Under the low roof that included pipes and beams under which Bailey had to stoop, students learned about the lifestyle of Yokuts Indians while looking at authentic artifacts.

Over the years, the program has moved a few times. It was conducted in the basement until the spring of 1952 when the program was moved to a former Kern County Fair Association building behind the main museum building. After the 1952 earthquake, the program moved into the north gallery of the main museum. The program stayed in the north gallery until the spring of 2009 when it moved to the newly renovated Three Oaks Lecture Hall.

Bailey was the primary docent for only one year. In 1949, the Barrios family began conducting the program. Pete Barrios, a member of the Tejon tribe of Yokuts, and his wife Clara, a member of the Tachi tribe of Yokuts, demonstrated acorn pounding, flour leeching, and basket weaving and spoke about traditional Yokuts lifestyle as they displayed a variety of artifacts including baskets, tools, beads, and weapons. During the five weeks that the Barrios first conducted the program, their sons Jimmie (age 2) helped grind acorns while Mark (age 7 months) slept in a traditional Yokuts cradleboard. Their third son, Willie, took his turn in the cradleboard in the spring of 1952.

The Barrios family continued telling the story of their people until the spring of 1956, when Elydia Gilbert Vasquez who grew up on the Sebastion Indian Reservation replaced the Barrios as the docent. Elydia Gilbert Vasquez conducted the program for a number of years, and she and the Barrios family have been joined by a number of dedicated docents including Shirley McFadzean, Phyllis Fieber, Richard “Dick” Heber, Thursa Revenaugh, Ken Griffin, Betty Wachob, LeAnna Dracup, Don Halbert, Gloria Dixon, Carol Henshaw, Dorothy McGee, Chris McDaneld, Barbara Adams, Dale Hopwood, Don Golden, and Barbara Kelly. Each docent has undergone extensive training to ensure a quality experience for the students.

During the 1940s and 1950s, the program was conducted twice a year for 5 weeks each session. The lecture lasted twenty minutes and an additional five minutes was allowed for questions. At that time, it was suggested that schools allocate 45 minutes for the program and to view the museum. Today, the program is offered every Tuesday and Thursday and lasts for an hour; it consists of a half-hour lecture and a half-hour hands-on acorn grinding experience. In the 2008-2009 school year, over 2,000 pupils participated in the program and spent, on average, 3 hours at the museum. That is quite an improvement over the suggested 45 minute museum visit of the 1940s!

As standards have changed in the schools, so have standards in museum education. In 1951, “free mimeographed Indian unit pamphlets” that “authoritatively cover the study of Kern county Indians” were available. A few years ago, Educational and Voluteer Services Manager Jackie Brouillette and docents revamped the program to meet the California State Framework for History and the Social Sciences. Program packets that include information about the Yokuts, as well as pre-visit and post-visit activities to enhance the local history curriculum are now offered to teachers. A learning guide is also available online!

In 1948, the Bakersfield Californian wrote, “Success of the program, [Bailey] believes, depends largely on the cooperation of the schools and teacher. Many instructors welcome the plan wholeheartedly, he says, and believe it is a vast improvement over the use of textbook since it brings the lesson much closer to the pupils.” The longevity of the program is evidence that the schools and teachers have cooperated! Over the years, other programs have been added to the museum’s school tour offerings including One-Room School Tour, Frontier Life Living History Day, California Living History Day, and Black Gold: The Oil Experience.

PISMO BEACH—Men of the Central Coast are invited to a large-scale, multi-church event on Saturday, October 10. New Life Community Church will be hosting a conference titled “Awaken the Giant” from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $35 and includes lunch.

The national speakers include Paul Coughlin, author of “No More Christian Nice Guy,” “Married but not Engaged,” and “Unleashing Courageous Faith.” Coughlin is also an itinerate speaker for the GodMen movement out of Nashville, Tennessee. Brad Stine, nationally known stand-up comedian and spokesperson for GodMen, will also be speaking at the conference. Stine has made appearances on the Tonight Show, Evening at the Improv, CNN, FOX News, MTV, and Comedy Central.

Local speakers will be Dr. James Johnson Hill, assistant pastor of Agape Christian Fellowship and Gary Holcomb, an ex-con who currently leads the “Pure Desire” recovery group in Pismo Beach.

This is the day the world will know how strong and UNITED we are, and Terrorism does nothing more than ignite the fierce determination to eradicate those who partake. THE WORLD UNITED on this. Terror does not accomplish anything other than to inflame and to re-enforce the need to do away with those who do not understand the ways of civilization where communication and mutual understanding, agreeing to disagree is acceptable. The Lord says Pray for your enemies, and he says Vengeance is mine. So I do pray for my enemies. I might not pray for their health and well being, but I pray. Nonverbal until four, and with much help from his parents, teachers, and others, Stephen completed his doctoral dissertation at Boston University focused on matching best practice to the needs of people on the autism spectrum. You all remember Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona , who painted the jail cells pink and made the inmates wear pink prison garb.. Well..........

Oh, there's MUCH more to know about Sheriff Joe!

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs.. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.

The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.

The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.

The prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of the fees collected for adopted animals.

I have long wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand.

He has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison..

Yup, he was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a mural, that has a special hotline phone number painted on it, where you can call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a 'Git-R Dun' kind of S heriff.

Way To Go, Sheriff!

Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders. Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money and enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

Class reunions not all that they're cracked up to be

Like many people in their 30's I have dealt with many obstacles; divorce, new career, growing children, and the dreaded high school reunion. I stood in my kitchen discussing the upcoming evening with my girlfriend who coincidentally has a reunion for her high school the exact same night as mine. She was discussing how much fun it was going to be and all of the friends that she was looking forward to seeing. She asked who I was most looking forward to seeing and after a brief pause, I said, "No one, really". It was at this point that I made the decision not to attend my 20 year high school reunion.

I recalled all of the emails that I have received over the past year from the planning committee. As I read the emails encouraging me to come out for a great evening I recalled that these were the same people who didn't take the time to get to know me in the first place when we were in school together. There was an incident recently at a soccer park where my children were playing when I ran into a person that I went to high school with. During the conversation, which I initiated, the person looked as though they would rather being having oral surgery than to have to stand there and converse with me for one more second. Ironically, this is the same person who has been sending me emails to attend the reunion. Did they suddenly have a change of heart and discovered the error of their ways? Did they find out something about me in the past year that made them really want to get to know me now? It seemed too ridiculous that these people would want to spend and evening with a person going over the good ole days, when that person wasn't part of their good ole days.

Now I know what you're thinking. This guy is just a bitter, closed minded, loner who never fit in with the people he went to high school with. The truth is that I was friendly and social, but after three of my best friends moved away after my sophomore year, the cliques had already been established and fitting in with a new crowd just wasn't in the cards for me. I new quite a few people, but after class was over at 3:00, so was their interest in me. People who know me now would never know that high school was one of the most difficult times in my life. And that’s saying a lot considering the fact that I have started a new business and gotten divorced, all in the last three years.

Others will have their reasons for not wanting to go and dredge up the past. I'm not bashing on those who want to go to their respective reunions. I can imagine that if you did have a lot of friends that you went to school with for longer than just high school, you would probably want to reconnect. But for people in my situation who didn't quite feel part of that special bond, it doesn't hold any interest. In fact, I think I’m having oral surgery that night.

AUTISM WORKSHOP: BEHAVIORS, TANTRUMS AND MELTDOWNS IN THE HOME

On Saturday, September 5, 2009, the Kern Autism Network will present “Behaviors, Tantrums and Meltdowns in the Home—Autism,” a workshop for parents, teachers and anyone working with autistic individuals. The workshop will be held at the Kern County Superintendent of Schools office, 1300 - 17^th Street, Room 1B, in Bakersfield, from 8:15 a.m. until noon.

Presenter Gerald Lavarias, MS, is Co-owner and Director of Services from Multilevel Applications & Positive Support Services (MAPSS), a local educational and behavioral services, non-public agency.

Mr. Lavarias has worked in special education for 11 years. He graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from California State University of Bakersfield and a Master’s of Science in Psychology: Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) through California State University of Los Angeles (CSULA) (an accredited and highly recommended university among experts and qualified professionals).

His professional training, experience, and education are based primarily in the field of ABA. He is known for his expertise in demonstrating, implementing, training, supervising, and coordinating ABA program approaches across toddlers, children, adolescents, and adults with special needs such as autism and other learning disabilities through private and public companies.

He has conducted presentations and workshops in Bakersfield and Los Angeles, including state conferences such as the Annual California ABA Conference (2005). His philosophy is to provide ABA applications in the most functional, practical, and effective way to families in order to create the best quality of life for their child.

Topics will include: identifying challenging behaviors; defining tantrum-related behaviors; what typically activates challenging behaviors; what to do before behaviors occur; methods that can be taught; providing strategies when tantrums occur; appropriate reinforcing strategies; and integrating and blending strategies into home and community environments.

Join other parents and professionals in a discussion about why challenging behaviors (e.g., tantrums and meltdowns) occur and what are several practical and functional ways to use them at home. There will be opportunities to discuss and share accounts about this topic in order to empower you with suggestions and information.

Reservations are on a first come, first served basis. Current KAN paid members with membership card are free. DUI and Blood Alcohol Content

If you have been driving a car, motorcycle, or any other vehicle for sometime now, you must be aware of the terms DUI and BAC. DUI stands for Driving under Influence of alcohol or drugs, and is a serious crime. BAC refers to Blood Alcohol Content or concentration of alcohol in the blood. The BAC determines whether or not, someone has been drunk driving. However, there is not much clarity among drivers over what is the BAC, how it is calculated, and what factors determine the BAC.

The BAC is the legal and medical way of determining the level of intoxication in a person. It can be measured in different units, but it is generally calculated in mass per volume. In the United States, if a person is found to have a BAC of 0.08%, he or she is considered drunk.

To give you some kind of an idea about the BAC, 1 standard drink (equivalent to 44ml of liquor or 355ml of beer or 148ml of table wine), normally increases a person’s BAC from 0.02% to 0.05%. The BAC or blood alcohol will return to zero in 1 and a half to 3 hrs after consuming the drink. However, it is not possible to determine the exact number of drinks that will cause a BAC of 0.8% in a person due to numerous factors. Some of these are:

Gender – The ratio of fat to water is more in women. This means that less water is available to dilute the drink that is consumed in women which leads to a higher BAC.
Weight – A person who has more body weight will have more quantity of water in his or her body. Therefore, their BAC will be lower than that of a person who is thinner.
Fitness – If you have more muscles in your body as compared to fat, you will have a lower BAC than a person who has more fat.
Food – If you eat along with your drink, it will lower the absorption rate of alcohol in the body and the BAC will be lower for the first few hours after the drink is consumed. However, the alcohol will stay in your blood for many more hours as compared to if you had your drink on empty stomach.
Speed of Drinking – If you drink fast, the body will not get adequate time to absorb the drink and your BAC will start going up. You should not consume more than one drink per hour as that is the alcohol absorption rate of the human body.

It is important that you keep the above factors in mind the next time you consume alcohol. Do not drive after consuming alcohol because your BAC may be much higher than what you presume.

Levan Course Teaches the Nuts and Volts of Robotics

It may be as foreign of an idea as you can think of – learning robotics when you are out of school, your kids are grown, and your grandkids are bouncing around the house. But it’s those grandkids who are likely to get the most out of you taking a class in robotics at Bakersfield College’s Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning this fall.

Robots are prevalent in the world around you, from inside your cars to the machines conducting medical tests. Honda’s famous ASIMO is a robot humanoid that thinks, moves and acts like humans do. Cars can now monitor your driving habits in order to automatically adjust to what you are doing, what the engine is doing, and what is happening around you – that’s a robot. The radio controlled airplane you fly at the park on weekends – is not – because you are controlling it. But, if you had a computer onboard, using a global positioning system, you could program the plane to turn back toward the starting point should the control signals stop for some reason, thereby turning your airplane into a robot.

This is your opportunity to learn and understand more about the robots in your life.

If learning robotics seems like a stretch to you, or if you think that just because you never took classes in engineering or mechanics that you can’t build a robot, think again. In just four short months and only one day a week, you will build and program your very own robot without a lot of boring lectures to sit through. What’s more, with the hands-on experience you’ll have, you’ll be able to help your grandkids build their own robot too! With the holidays coming up, a robot-building project between you and your grandkids would make for a lifetime of memories.

Really, you don’t need any robotics knowledge or other sort of mechanical training to have fun in this class, as we gear the projects based on individual experience and ability. You won’t be constantly monitored, and there is a bit of outside class work to do, so you need to be a self-starter. That outside class work will help you become more comfortable with computers and the internet.

In the class, you will build small robots that sense the world around them and respond to the changes in their environment. Through programming, you will help the robots avoid obstacles, navigate through a maze, walk a line, or even play music.

While the class is for the Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning, students can be of any age and can be multi-generational teams working together. Bakersfield College’s Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning is offering the class on Robotics starting September 8 and running through December 8. The class is held on Tuesday evenings from 6 – 9 p.m. Cost for the class is $10.

Ron Siemens is a graduate of Shafter High School and Bakersfield College. He earned a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and a master’s degree in computer science from California Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo. Siemens has vast experience as a software engineer and scientist in the aerospace industry, working for companies such as Ford Aerospace, Xerox Medical Diagnostics and the California Institute of Technology.

Sevice Animal

I recently obtained a prescription for a service animal. Purchasing this animal, I began training her immediately. Under the ADA anyone with a qualifying disability can train there own animal without being discriminated against in the public.

I was transferred from one office to another due to our wonderful Government. During transition, my first visit., myself and my Service Animal were discriminated against accessing a public building. I was asked, what disability, proof of disability, dog shot record. training certification. etc. I politely informed the Receptionist, (with all the questions) the law of having a service animal. I even provided the tag that my Service Animal wears, (not the hers) another that I carry for educational purposes. Now mind you this office is out of compliance for access for people with many other disabilities. When called for my appointment, I informed this person of the discrimination. The receptionist in the facility denied all accusations. 30days later I had another appointment at 8:00 am in which I personally set due to the fact there is not enough room for other people with disabilities. When the receptionist unlocked the door, she told me I would have to set outside. "Excuse me" no, I do not intend to set outside this office. In the meantime, another appointment had come to the same facility, petting my service animal (asking me first). The receptionist then stated if they do not mind, I would be able to come in. She then stated (lying) that there was a complaint from the last visit. I informed her I was here and no one was in the room at the time. While waiting for my appointment, 2 other people came in the office. Not a word from anyone in regards to my Service Animal. As I was being called, I stood and asked if anyone thought that my Service Animal was a nuisance. The four who were in the same room politely stated no. I again spoke with the person during my appointment about this discriminating receptionist and was given the Administration email address.

All I am saying is before people make judgement on other people, they should try and become more educated.

Drug and Alcohol Facilities

I would like to comment on what we call Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs.

The main goal of these facilities is to rehabilitate the people enrolled by making sure that they learn the steps as to not return to the use of drugs and/or alcohol. They get tested randomly twice a week to ensure that they are keeping with the program. What happens if they slip up and use again? They get locked down for thirty days and re-start their being clean from day one again. What happens if they slip a second time same thing or maybe a 60 day lock down. But what if they continue to use drugs or consume alcohol during their commitment to these facilities? I can't really say for sure but it looks to me that they just keep the frequent abusers around so the can collect a check from them. Now what about the ones who are trying to get straight but are having a hard time at it because everybody else around them is drinking or using? You can't just get up and leave the program or you will get violated. You can only hold out for so long until you fall back into the main stream along with everyone else. You might say that they are weak but think about this. Every morning for a year straight you wake up and have a cup of coffee. One day you decide to quit. You go to work and everyone around you is drinking coffee. The sight and smell of it is driving you crazy. How long are you going to hold out for before you give in? I know drugs and coffee are not the same thing but they are both addicting. Some of these facilities have health issues as well. Leaking water pipes, roaches, bed bugs, rats, head lice. Who would want to be ina facility like that? Oh, I almost forgot that even some of the staff at these facilities are among the ones drinking or using, so how are you gonna stay clean if nobody else is?

California has been issuing IOU's for decades.

If you cross the border illegally, IOU free medical care, welfare, housing etc.

If you break a law, IOU free medical, 3 meals a day, an education etc.

If you are too lazy to work, IOU free medical care, welfare, housing etc.

The only IOU California has failed to honor is the IOU all hard working law abiding tax paying legal residents of this state were issued.

IOU a fiscally responsible government, laws that are upheld, votes that count, in short a government of the people, by the people, for the people

Amazing Chloe

My Goddaughter is someone to be cherished. She is 10 years old and her name is Chloe. Even though she may be young in years, she is wise in soul. I am touched to be able to watch the life of this special little person flourish.

Over the last four years she has been involved in the battle against cancer. She has seen and felt suffering and pain and she has not been unaffected. She watched her close friends’ family suffer through Mamo’s daily fight against colon cancer.

Chloe felt the burden but did not let it stop her from being extremely supportive of her 8 year old friend. As well as using her quick wit and silly antics to momentarily divert the rest of the families’ dismay with laughter. In times of crisis Chloe shows up and is ready to help.

Every day for months Chloe faced cancer in the face. Her little heart was crushed when her father was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He is her hero. The fear of losing him was overwhelming. Through the grueling life changes her family faced, she gave it her best. Encouraging and motivating anyone who was down hearted. Today Chloe and her father are here to tell the story of their hard won battle.

Both of Chloe’s paternal grandparents were diagnosed with cancer. Not knowing what to expect and feeling there was nothing for her to do, she sent cards and “Get Well Soons” as often as she could, praying daily for a miracle for both her Abuelo & Abuela.

Having survived the awful torment, with a new head of hair as a badge of honor Chloe salutes her grandparents. They are troopers and truly courageous.

The loss of a dear family friend has made an impact on the heart of this amazing 10 year old. She felt the loss, as did so many others, when her Papo died of Lyrengial cancer in August of 2008. She mourned and supported, but she also made a plan.

Determined to do what she can to help others in the battle against cancer Chloe made a pact with herself. She would find something she could do herself to help others battling this atrocious disease. Being only 10 years old, she did not know how she could accomplish this fete.

Her amazing determination set her on a path to make sure other people can enjoy a part of life that a lot of us take for granted. Chloe realized she could help in the fight against cancer with her hair. She has beautiful black hair she can grow all on her own. For quite some time now Chloe has resisted cutting it and has dealt with the teasing to fulfill her mission to help make life a little brighter for someone who is in the fight of their life, by sharing her hair. Undeterred by her critics, Chloe has set out to help those with cancer her way. Chloe has grown her hair to well over 12 inches long. She looks forward to donating it to Locks for Love very soon.

I am touched and blessed by the impact this one little girl is determined to make on another persons life. She is a very special girl with a very special mission.

What 4th of July Means to Me

We all know what 4th of July represents.....Our independence from Britain in 1776 and when our Democracy was born. On this day, Americans and everyone living in this great nation celebrate our independence with barbecues, picnics and family gatherings. Throughout history, we have been celebrating with fireworks at large controled events at football stadiums or neighborhood block parties.

The 4th of July is a very special day to me, not only because it's our independence day but because on this day in 1916, my mother was born in the state of Jalisco in Mexico. This year, my mother, Refugio Macias Serrano "Cuca" will celebrate her 93rd birthday in San Jose, CA. Throughout the years, our family has gathered in San Jose to celebrate this great day. My mother had five children who had twelve children who had had eight children and not counting about a hundred nieces and nephews.

Not all family members gathers in San Jose on this day but some of us do as a tradition throughout the years to celebrate my mother's birthday with stars and stripes, fireworks, cake and ice cream and "Las Mañanitas". The stars bursting in air are especially moving because of our independence and at the end of the night, we all join in Kareoke.

I owe my mother my life, my freedom, my career, my triumphs and everything that we all take for granted in this nation of many people. She worked out in the fields throughout the years and taught us that although this is a free nation, many people fought and died to make this happen and we should not take anyhthing for granted. She taught us that nothing is free and we have to work and earn what we eat and where we sleep. She showed us what working in the fields in 30 degree or 110 degree weather was like. We learned, because we were there with her. She worked hard so that we could get the education she didn't have and so that we could make something better of our lives.

My brother became a professor and Vice-Principal of a Redwood City high school where he is now retired. My oldest sister, Lupe, who's birthday is July 6, recently retired as a teacher from the San Jose Unified School District. My sister Rosa will be retiring as a Worker's Comp Manager for the County of Santa Clara after about 30 years and I was a deputy sheriff and have been a Private Investigator for 15 years, a Bail Agent and Notary Public. I have also been involved in non profit organizations and investigator associations throughout the years. She has been very proud of us and we thank her for our accomplishments.

My mother has told us many interesting stories throughout the years of her life struggles and great times in Mexico. How she was studying to be a nun and how she met my father when she went to town one day. My understanding was that he saw her, fell in love with her and convinced her to get married. The stories of her life in Guadalajara were so moving that I wanted to see her "tierra" myself and in 1982, I drove her to Guadalajara where we met our cousins for the first time. Since then, we have gotten very close and have traveled to Guadalajara numerouos times. On one of those occasions, I met Alma, a friend of one of my cousins, and we soon got married. She now also joins us in the tradition of the 4th of July.

The years have passes us by and we thank God that "Cuca" is still with us and wish her many more years. Her mind is so sharp, she remembers everything, even things that I have forgotten. She still tells us her stories and her favorites are when she marched along with Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and the UFW in the fields of Delano and the San Joaquin Valley. I know those stories to be true because I was also there in my younger years. Happy Birthday Mom. We love you!!

Teenagers and Driving Under the Influence (DUI)

Teenage DUI is a major problem facing this country. Studies show that more and more teenagers are indulging in this potentially fatal behavior. In a survey, almost half of all teenage students admitted to driving after drinking, or drinking while driving a vehicle. There is immense peer pressure on teenagers to drink and use drugs. Ten percent of teenagers are drinking illegally at least once every month.

Driving a vehicle in a safe manner requires that the driver be alert to his surroundings. The driver should also be in a position to make decisions quickly. Consumption of alcohol and drugs lead to poor hand eye coordination, slows down response time, hampers proper judgment and distorts the vision. All these factors contribute to mishaps and fatalities. There has been an alarming increase in teenage DUI.

The most shocking statistic that depicts the enormity of this problem is that almost 30% of all teenage deaths in automobile crashes were due to Driving Under the Influence (DUI/DWI). More than half of these teenagers who died in car crashes had even forgotten to strap their seat belts after drinking. Teenage drinking form a major threat to the society as teenage DUI deaths form more than 40% of all alcohol related deaths in the US.

Teenage DUI is not only responsible for causing thousands of deaths, but it also has staggering effects on our economy, by causing damages of more than $40 billion each year. The majority of teenagers get involved in a DUI during evenings, nights, or weekends. A lot of teenagers are not properly trained as drivers and this increases the likelihood of an accident.

There are severe legal consequences of teenage DUI that can substantially damage the future life of a youngster. They are likely to face jail time, license suspension, fines, and court ordered alcohol treatment. Now that this beloved dog has passed, C.B., in true caricature, journeys deeply into soul searching about the meaning of life and doggie heaven and along the way discovers he and his warm and sympathetic friend Beethoven (Schroeder) are closer than they both care to admit. And then there’s C.B.’s sister (Sally) who went goth, and Matt (Pig-Pen) is a pathological neat-freak, and Tricia York (Peppermint Patty) and Marcy are a pair of partying "mean girls", Van (Linus), always the philosopher in childhood, is now a pothead with a worldview to match. And the world's greatest fuss-budget Van's Sister (Lucy) has been institutionalized for setting the Little Red-Haired Girl's hair on fire. The wickedly funny premise that Royal explores in this off Broadway hit is zany, yet often poignant and is a treat for lovers of these very ‘adult’ kids from the past.

Caring Citizens

I would like to thank the people that came to my grandmother's rescue when she fell in the Kohl's parking lot on Sunday, June 7th. The first thing I asked when she told me what happend was, "Did anyone help you?". I was relieved and thankful when she told me of the people who helped her up, got her a wheel chair and waited with her until my aunt arrived. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you and appreciate your kindness.

No honor among rogues

There goes that sound again, I never got why people loved the sound of a muffler, and even though some times that’s the only accessory the “dragster” will put on their vehicle. They can be seen as a band of rogues traveling through the night setting up shop wherever there is an empty quarter mile strip. We have all come to encounter them all around town at night as they’re looking for a new location. Now I’ve never owned any type of car that could pose any threat in a quarter mile race, I would definitely own a mommy mobile though. There are obvious reasons why this group poses many threats to not only the city but also to its citizens. Now I will say the following I’m about to say is not being taken from an outsiders view, but from a prospector’s view that hung out with this crew. I was never into racing against people, but did enjoy watching. Followed the racing scene down in Inland Empire area and then again here in Bakersfield when me and a few friends stumbled upon them racing in the field area of southern Bakersfield on Wible Rd, just south of Bear Mountain Rd, hwy 223. Which almost every Saturday night around midnight still goes on, and right before that they convene at locations like the nearby parking lot of Albertsons. Now the real danger they pose is to themselves. First off for obvious reasons, anytime you increase your speed, you increase the chances of an accident and also decrease your chances of surviving that accident. Most importantly they have no honor within themselves. Like the tow truck with flames on it that charges everyone a fifty bucks or a case of beers to get their cars out of the dirt. It’s all fun and dandy when everyone is driving from location to location adverting the police. What happens when someone gets hurt? What happens when one of their own gets into an accident? They all scatter. Each and every one of them runs for their lives, in fear of suffering the consequences for the actions they take. One incident comes to mind many years ago when there was a couple looking to race. The guy was visibly intoxicated so his female companion drove. Well once she took off it seemed to me like she hit the NOS and began to skid. It was a horrible site as the car careened to the left hitting a few cars before completely turning and crossing the street again and hitting cars on the opposite side. I simply froze as I saw this site and was about to begin running towards the car to make sure they were safe, but my friend grabbed my arm and pulled me towards our car. The scene was actually rather depressing. No one, yes I repeat no one I saw was running towards the car. Everyone was scattering to their car. Once we started to drive off I jumped to the back seat and kept looking back towards the scene, many small accidents occurring as everyone was trying to get as far away from the incident as quickly as possible. Within minutes you could hear the sound of helicopters headed towards the scene. And shortly followed by the sound of squad cars and an ambulance. I was incredibly impressed at the response time. After that night I never went back to hang with that group. There is a rush being there, but that rush is not worth what my eyes saw that day. Although my curiosity was at an all time high, I never knew what happened to that couple, whether they were ok, got injured, or worst thing, lost their lives. I told myself I would never again go to any of those events. I wish there was a way the city could sanction a strip somewhere that can be surveyed where this group can be allowed to race to their delight. Because in my own opinion, they cannot be trusted to take care of their own. That strip on south Wible Rd is still very active on Saturdays at midnight, and no end in site. I just hope, that for the sake of everyone, they’d stop doing these races and work with the city on allowing them their own quarter mile so they can be monitored, since they can’t take care of their own.

Disgracing our flag.

I read an article in your newspaper about the tattered flag that flies at the entrance to Hart Park. I have to agree that a tattered flag is a disgrace to our flag and what it represents. You can drive around town and find many flags that are either tattered, or being flown at night without lighting, or are being flown during rainy weather. For instance, the flag that is flown at the Carl's Jr. on F. street is tattered. The flag that is flown outside the Social Security office on Haley is NEVER taken down and is not lighted. It has never been taken down since the building was built several years ago. We all show our patriotism on special holiday's and we stand and salute the flag when it passes in front of us, but, we disgrace it when it is flown in tattered condition, or during inclament weather.

Stop Making Your Mortgage Payments

To end the recession quickly there are four objectives that must be met.

1.More money must be created in the private sector to increase demand.

2.A majority of people in the economy must receive this money.

3.People's monthly outlays must not increase.

4.The Federal Government's deficit must not increase. It must be reduced.

Increasing taxes or decreasing taxes does not meet these objectives. Increasing taxes increases people's monthly outlays. Decreasing taxes increases government's deficits.

There is only one thing that meets all four objectives. The lowering of mortgage interest rates and the forgiveness of that portion of the mortgage that makes the home underwater. Underwater meaning the home will not sell for as much as the unpaid balance of the mortgage.

When people refinance their homes, at a lower rate of interest, their monthly outlays will decrease. This leaves more of their income to cover other expenses and purchases, thereby increasing economic activity. As the money supply increases prices and employment will stabilize and then increase.

All homes that are under water will need to have their mortgages adjusted, sold by short sale or foreclosed upon, for the economy to fully recover.

When mortgage holders forgive the amount of the mortgage that causes the home to be underwater, they will not need to go thru a foreclosure, which is costly and time consuming. The mortgage will become a performing asset, making it more valuable and easier to sell.

If the mortgage holders, of the homes that are underwater, are hoping that home prices will return to the high prices of early 2007, they are not going to see it happen. Foreclosures are increasing as unemployment increases. More people are growing wary of paying payments on a home that cannot be sold for the amount of the mortgage. The mortgage holders are more likely to end up with a foreclosure on their books, unless they come to realize the reality of the situation. Banks, mortgage holders and financial intuitions will make more money in a working economy that is expanding, than the amount of money they will be forgiving.

The Capitalistic entity of our economy should remember, that they played a pivotal role in the creation of the currant economic crisis and therefore should bear some of the cost of correcting it. If the entity does not come to this conclusion, the Committee For Economic Reform And A Better Economic Future will call upon other political groups, such as the Tea Party organizations, to organize a national protest by all homeowner that are underwater to stop making their mortgage payments. All the people who do not have a home that is underwater should support the protest because this recovery plan will increase their homes value by decreasing the amount of foreclosures in their neighborhood. By stopping payments, by a large amount of people, will get the Capitalistic entity's attention. They will be more likely to participate in this economic recovery plan.

People should be informed that being behind in their mortgage payments is the only way they will qualify for any of the government's home affordability programs.

The refinancing and adjustment of all mortgages will increase economic activity and end the recession quickly by increasing consumer’s confidence and disposable income.

About the lawyer, David A. Torres, opinion on page B9 in the 5-31-09 paper. First of all Limbaugh and Hannity are not the ones who brought up race & gender. Sotomayor used the phraise, "Latina woman, richness,experiences, better than a white male". Then her "opinion are perfect examples of decisions based upon the rule of law." She's been overturned on her opinion 60% of the time! That's below failing! If she was a major league ball player, she'd be an All-Star! She however is supposed to be a judge of the written law, not injecting her race or sex into how to rule by how she "feels". She's been right only 4 out of 10 or 40 out of 100 or 400 out of 1000 times. That's a lot of overruling and fixing wrong "opinions" and a lot of injustice! This woman has shown herself to abuse her power in the judiciary in the years of "service" and that is exactly why Obama chose her. Look at how he's been ruling this country, at light speed, for just under 5 months now. Mr. Torres, before you accuse any more Americans of telling lies about your judicial activists, try listening to them, not what you "think" they are saying!

I have recently been to two different functions in as many weeks, and I am appalled at the rowdy, disrespectful behavior of our audiences.

We attended my freshman daughter's end of the year choir concert expecting to be able to sit and enjoy the music and singing of the students. Instead, we had to listen to the many people around us talking louder than the students could sing, playing with their cell phones, giggling and laughing. The instructor had to stop several times to wait for the audience to come to some semblance of order before they could proceed. After he addressed the crowd directly and asked for quiet, we had the pleasure of a group of young people behind us pick back up their conversation louder than before, at which point my husband had to turn around and tell them that the instructor was talking to them about being quiet. Then they had the audacity to get up and move down the row as if we were the ones being disrespectful! I honestly can't tell you if the concert was good or not.

Worse yet was the graduation ceremony from a local short term college that we attended for my older daughter. There was a class of about 100 young adults and all of their families and friends crammed into the Fox Theater. The event itself could have been better coordinated, but worse than the lack of planning was the audience. The audience came to some order for the singing of The Star Spangled Banner, but then afterward became increasingly rowdy. We could not hear the Valedictorians speaking at all; a special honor held for a select few students who achieved a high standard of excellence in their time at school. The staff then had to skip the remainder of the speakers to jump ahead to the graduates, at which time the audience went from rowdy to out of control. There were whoops and hollers, screaming, yelling, and air horns. All of which made it so that we couldn't even hear them announce the graduates names and if they graduated with honors or high honors. It was so bad that the line of grads couldn't even return to their seats because the audience was beginning to crowd the aisles to leave early after their graduate had received their diploma. We couldn't even stay for the remainder of the ceremony and the congratulating of the class of 2009. This doesn't even begin to describe the chaos that controlled this function. It was so bad that my mother and father in law were accosted at the doors by people wanting in as they were trying to leave 30 minutes into the program. I feel as if my daughter, who graduated with high honors, was gypped out of her graduation.

So, Shame on Bakersfield Audiences!! Yes, the "dummying down of our society" is readily apparent in our audiences. There is no decorum, no respect and certainly no class to be found here. And frankly, I am ashamed to call Bakersfield my home.

Garage Music Studio Goes High Tech

For those of us whose understanding of the rock and roll genre ended with the Beach Boys’ Pet Sounds or the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, it is heartening to know that the music coined by these former cellar or garage bands is alive and well. In Bakersfield, the practice continues at an astonishing level of sophistication. Unlike the historical efforts by Talley Records here in town that helped create and popularize the Bakersfield Sound in country music, today’s garage band entrepreneurs are quite high tech. Take the work of Anthony Rosales, for instance. A musician, songwriter, and music engineer turned record producer, he is in the local forefront of this high tech effort.

In a newer track-home in the southernmost part of town, Rosales has converted a portion of his garage into a recording studio. This in itself may not be remarkable but for the expensive equipment and whisper room that is usually found only in a high tech Hollywood studio. Such equipment was used during the last Olympics that allowed sports commentators to cover the events from studios in New York. According to Rosales, his whisper room may be the only one individually-owned for professional use in Bakersfield. Rosales co-owns the business with his brother, Jeremy England, who helped finance the production equipment.

While visiting Rosales’ studio, I met the members of Flawless Design, a hard rock band based in Sacramento. Members include Patrick Lucas, lead singer, Derek Rauh, drums, Jonathan Tobin, guitar, and Mason Lowe singer. In today’s music, the live recording session doesn’t exist since each performance aspect is recorded individually and synthesized together by the producer-engineer into a final product. Lucas noted that “Anthony and I played together in Sacramento and I trust his work for his precision and interpretation of the music.”

Rosales is a family man and rarely on the road these days. He is a stay-at-home father of two boys with a girl on the way in June. His wife, Casper, is the principal family breadwinner but supports her husband’s professional aspirations. Rosales is a student in the Berklee School of Music via its extension program. “I have learned so much from the school experience but practical application is what is most important. I am really doing this work on a part-time basis because of my busy schedule and I want to limit the work I do to reflect a high standard for professional creativity,” Rosales recalled. Eventually, Rosales plans to expand his professional work beyond the rock genre, into other music such as country music, but for the time feels comfortable producing what he knows best. Rosales credits the building of his studio to his friends Brian and Nathan Luttell and Skip Rice. Basically what has happened to our economy, the means of exchange has decreased significantly.

The Committee For Economic Reform and a Better Economic Future has developed an Alternative Economic Stimulus plan to restart our economy. It does not require the Federal government to create a huge deficit, to return consumer's deposable income.

CSUB Professor of Economics Mark Evans was quoted as saying, we are going to have to live with large deficits for a long time, and there is no other way. We disagree with that statement. The Committee believes that there is another way.

President Obama is relying on Keynesian Economics. John Maynard Keynes's policies put governments into massive debt, to stimulate the economy and return people's disposable income. Over time more government programs are created, increasing the size of government, as our economy cycles through periodic periods of recession and inflation.

Consumption and home creation represents 75% of the economic activity in our economy. The economy will not fully recover until the consumer's financial condition and confidence improves. Investor confidence, in making long-term investments, needs to improve also. This will happen as the economy improves and when we enact the Zero Inflation Taxation Policy. http://americansolutions.com/

When the Federal Reserve lowered the Fed rate and the banks and other financial institutions could not follow the Fed' lead, of lowering the cost of the means of exchange, the collapse of employment and the stock market occurred. If lower interest rates had been available, for credit worthy borrowers, the money supply would have quickly expanded, creating enough of the means of exchange for our economy to continue to work. The recession would not have gotten out of control, causing the massive layoffs, decreasing people's disposable income, there-by causing the economy to continue its downward spiral. Consumer and investor confidence was thus lost.

The enterprise economic system cannot operate efficiently, without the correct amount of the means of exchange (money) being in balance with available supply.

About 5% of the money we use to exchange our goods and services is represented by paper money. The other 95% of the means of exchange is created with credit. Credit expands the money supply. Because of the collapse of the price of housing and the stock market, trillions of the means of exchange (money), has evaporated (gone). The economy has an insufficient amount of the means of exchange in it to create enough demand to balance demand with available supply. This is why people are being laid off. Our available supply is greater than we need, because people have less money to buy the products they want. Their confidence to make long-term commitments has been shattered. They are only willing to spend money on the things they need and not make long term plans for the future, because they are not sure they will have a job or business tomorrow.

The federal government created a huge deficit to increase the means of exchange in our economy to increase demand, so our economy will start working again, and the unemployed will be re-employed. The Committee is offering an alternative idea. Give the power to the people. Let them create the money. In this way we make the decisions, on what the money will be spent on.

The restarting of the economy is the easy part. It is the slowing down of the economy, before inflation is created, that is the hard part. The currant method of slowing down the economy, by increasing interest rates until the means of exchange is too expensive to conduct business, creates a recession. If the policies we have outlined in the Alternative Economic Stimulus Plan had been enacted, the housing bubble would not have occurred and we would not have created the deep recession that we are going through.

They are asking you for your endorsement and support of the Alternative Economic Stimulus Plan. After 45 Years the Boy Scouts Bid Farewell to a Dear Friend and Co-Worker

It was a sunny day in early April 1964 when a spry young woman entered the Scout office. Little did she know what a large impact on the face of Kern County she would make. She was wild, she was fun, and she held such compassion for boys that no one really knew what a difference she would make in the lives of thousands of youth who entered the Scout office to begin their Scouting adventures. But we know 45 years later, that her enthusiasm, dedication, and friendship have made it possible for the Scouting program to thrive.

For 45 years Jolene Hoff has opened the Boy Scout Service Center, raised the American flag, made a pot of coffee, and began her daily routine of helping boys, leaders, parents and staff make a difference in their lives. She greets everyone with a hearty “hello” and “may I help you?” It is that word “help” that many who enter the Trading Post pass as rhetoric or dismiss as just a cordial greeting, but it is the word “help” that Jolene speaks from the heart.

“Jolene truly cares about her customers and the mission of the Boy Scouts of America,” said Scout Executive and CEO, Danny Tucker. “She takes great pride in learning people’s names, and as a result of her tenure, she has become quite the council historian.”

For many boys, Jolene is best known for handling the Eagle Scout Rank processing. For years, she has made sure the “I’s” are dotted and the “T’s” are crossed on every application before it is sent to National BSA. When you think of the hundreds of Eagles Scouts that have gone on to become great leaders in their business, industry and in community service in Kern, Inyo and Mono counties, you can agree that Jolene has far impacted the quality of life and leadership in our local communities.

The evening will consist of great food, fun and fellowship and will properly recognize the historic contribution Jolene Hoff has made to the Southern Sierra Council. NEW COMMITEE FORMED TO PROMOTE ECONOMIC Stability

A new committee has been formed to promote economic reform and stability. Their goal is to create policies that promote and create a stable economy that will provide the opportunities for people to be able to provide for themselves and their families. To create a financial system that provides a stable means of exchange. That the value of the currency can be relied upon to provide a safe storage of value, thereby creating the basis for people to be able to make long term commitments and plans. Promote a society that promotes personal responsibility and the freedom to succeed or fail. Promotes a government that creates a level field of competition; that guides but does not control.

I have over forty years in the financial and business world. For 28yrs I have been saying that there is a major flaw in our economic policies. There is too much debt being created in the inflation economic cycle, which leads to a recession or depression. When a recession is created, the government repeats the same mistake of creating a huge deficit, to stimulate the economy, that leads to inflation and another recession.

The currant economic crisis could have been prevented if the changes I have been proposing would have been enacted 28yrs ago. By using the income tax to discourage excessive credit use during the inflation cycle, to maintain a balanced economy, will help eliminate the endless cycles of inflation and recession. The currant recession can be corrected without the government creating a huge deficit. By using the policies outlined in the Alternative Economic Stimulus Plan to stimulate the economy, it will end the recession without creating another inflation cycle.

On our Federal Reserve notes is printed IN GOD WE TRUST it should read IN THE FED WE TRUST. The government gave its power over the money supply to the Federal Reserve. The Fed with its interest rate policies and the government’s misguiding tax policies are the people’s agencies that created the currant economic crisis. They were helped by people that did not understand the dangers of credit. Add in greed and you have a perfect storm, heading for a major economic crisis.

I hope that we can agree that our philosophies are very close and that the weapon (plan) that we need to win this battle, to reduce deficits and improve our economy, is close at hand.

When the economy is correctly guided and is maintained in balance, it will produce more tax revenues for federal, state, and local governments without raising taxes, as the California Congress has done. As more and more people are able to take care of them-selves, and the enterprise system provides the necessary services that are needed to make our economy more efficient, the government can be reduced in size and taxes can be lowered.

A few months back, while treating my new girlfriend to an ice cream at the local Sonic, I was smacked square in the brain by a disturbing idea. What triggered the idea was a simple two words uttered by my girlfriend. So, let me set this up for you. We were eating our ice cream and just enjoying the day when I noticed a book store hidden in a dark corner of an empty block. I had never noticed that book store before and mentioned this to my girlfriend. While reflecting on the possibility of exploring this new book store, my girlfriend uttered the two words which inspired this article. “You read?” I sat there in silence for a few moments trying to decipher the meaning of this question. After exploring many possibilities for what she meant by asking this, I responded with a simple “yes”. She quickly responded with “like books and stuff?” At this point I was completely confused. After replying “yes”, this young woman immediately informed me that I was the only person she knows who reads. She was completely shocked to know someone who actually read books. I have been dating this girl for some time now and since that day; she often introduces me to her friends by telling them that I am smart because I read books. I guess the disturbing idea is that reading is quickly becoming a dying pastime. I understand that there are still groups of people who enjoy reading, but I fear that these bookworms are a dying breed. As a matter of fact, I wonder if our obsession with technology is in some way leading to the demise of leisure reading. Are we to consumed by Youtube, Myspace, or our increasing number of T.V Channels to sit down and read a book. I wonder if perhaps a shift is occurring, a shift from turning pages to clicking a mouse and scrolling to the next screen. Even now, as I write this article, I wonder if there is still a place for it to be read and hopefully enjoyed. Soon newspapers will disappear, and their decreasing followers will have no alternative but to turn to the web or the T.V. to remain informed. Scary scenario huh? Well I guess I shouldn’t be too worried. At least this way, my girlfriend will always think I am smart.
